“A perfect place for a family vacation in the Dordogne”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

We are an Israeli family of 2 parents and 2 daughters, aged 8.5 and 5.5.

We spent four nights of our vacation in France in August 2012 at "Les
Charmes de Carlucet". From the very first moment we noticed the high efforts
of the owners, Helen and Eric Edgar, to make our stay as comfortable and
enjoyable as possible. This included among other things an excellent and
fresh breakfast, clean, air conditioned and very spacious room, and a quite
large, heated and also clean pool (both precious assets during the hot
summer afternoons of the Dordogne valley). Eric and Helen were very helpful
not only in giving advice and recommendations for planning our day but also
actively calling themselves and making reservations for the local
attractions and restaurants. When we found out that we were supposed bring
our own towels for the pool which we didn't, Helen gave us some additional
towels without thinking twice. This is one of many examples for the Edgars'
warm and caring hospitality. The family pets contributed as well to our
stay: Every morning when we came down for breakfast and whenever we came back
to the premises of "Les Charmes" we received a warm welcome by Filou, the
charming golden retriever dog, which our daughters got very attached to, as
well as to the family cat, Marou.

We also enjoyed very much our evening strolls under the star lighted sky
from The neighboring Irish pub-restaurant, "The black duck" (which we will
recommend separately), back to our room.

The house has also a role in Jewish history, as it turns out that two
families were hiding in the attic from the Nazis during the Holocaust.
According to Eric they managed to survive and one of their descendants is
now a famous singer in France.

"Les Charmes de Carlucet" is located in a very quiet countryside
environment, and yet quite central in the Dordogne valley. We highly
recommend it and surely will be looking forward to stay in it again the next
time we visit the area.

My husband, myself and our 2 children stayed for 2 nights in a family room. It was plenty big enough very clean and very comfortable. The breakfasts were delicious and the setting beautiful.
Eric speaks excellent English and provided us with great local knowledge and maps etc of the area.
There is a beautiful pool and also the very friendly family dog Filou was a real hit with our family.
I would recommend a stay at this fabulous B&B.

We stayed in Le Cochonnet for 2 weeks in August this year. The gite was lovely with plenty of space both inside and out - we spent every evening we could in the garden space outside, watching the sun go down over the church. Such an idyllic spot.
The fact that the gite didn't have a pool wasn't a problem at all as we spent many afternoons at the house pool with super family that we met staying in the House. A great opportunity to meet other guests.
The grounds are beautiful and the location perfect - very spoilt to have both tranquility and a local pub a very short troll away!
Eric was extremely helpful, going out of his way to furnish us with ideas for days out and restaurants to visit - all of them excellent recommendations.
We were all very sad to leave - not realising how much we'd needed a holiday and so lucky to have had one so relaxing and enjoyable.
A big thank you to Eric and Helen for providing such a wonderful welcome and being so very helpful during our stay. Eric's dog Filou was a big hit with our boys and our 2 year old now insists that every dog we see must be Filou!

I highly recommend Les Charmes as a place to stay in the Dordogne. Eric and Helen are excellent hosts and we really appreciated all the help and guidance that they gave us. We will always have good memories of our holiday at Les Charmes de Carlucet, the house gave us comfort, privacy and a feeling of home.

We stayed with Eric and Helen two years ago and returned this year to find it as excellent as ever. We spent a good deal of our time this year in the large garden with its mature trees, where a shady spot was always there to be found. Our hosts were always ready to help, advising on places to visit or eat and reserving meals for us. The breakfasts were varied and always tempting. The countryside around is wooded and hilly with spectacular long views, while there are many interesting chateaus in easy reach as well as the world-famous prehistoric caves and museums exhibiting the finds. For us this was just an ideal place to relax and feel very well looked after.

We have just arrived back from a two week stay in Eric's 'Le Cochonnet' Gite. The Gite we booked is the one without the private pool, but for us this was perfect as we really enjoyed the opportunity to meet other guests around the big heated swimming pool, and then retire to our lovely Gite after.

The standard of the Gite is superb, and I cannot think of any fault to report what so ever!

Eric and his family were so welcoming, gave us lots of very useful information on the area so we knew the places we were to visit were actually worth visiting. We had the perfect balance of doing days and pool days

The house and grounds are beautiful, and from the moment we got there I could feel all stress slipping away. It's in a very peaceful location, but then you have a lovely bar and restaurant 2 minutes walk down the lane (The Black Duck), and the village of Salignac 5 minutes drive away. The town of Salat is only 15 minutes drive away, so you have the perfect balance of peace and tranquility, within easy reach of beautiful towns and other attractions..

Eric also agreed to us taking our small well behaved dog with us, who soon became good mates with Eric's dog Filou. This worked out so well for us, and our dog had just as good time as we did!

This area of the Dordogne is amazingly beautiful, and Les Charmes is the perfect base to explore from. Thank you to Eric and his lovely family for making our stay very special. Eric is a lovely host, and the set up they have created is a credit to the whole family.

We hope very much to book again for next year, if you choose to stay here you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Whether you book B&B of rent a Gite, you will not be disappointed with your stay here.

I would highly recommend Les Charmes as a place to stay to explore this part of Perigord. I felt comfortable staying here, Eric & Helen made us feel at home & had excellent suggestions as where to eat & visit during our stay. The loft room we stayed in had air conditioning over a particularly hot period which was a relief. They are child friendly & the swimming pool was also a bonus.
