The staff was surprisingly friendly, however the hotel is really old, dirty and stinky. The beds were impossible to sleep on with springs sticking out of it. It was really cold in the winter. Needed an extra space heater to warm up the room. The bathrooms were dirty, moldy and scary, with cracked tiles, leaky bathtub and bad power outlets :s
The restaurants were ok but still stinky...
Would not recommend to anyone!!!

After reading the reviews I was expecting the worst. What I got was one the best of my Europe tour.
I had just finished a 5 week tour of Europe by car and needed to stay someplace before travel to Bulgaria’s Varna airport. My friend had business in Shumen so we booked a cheap deal via a popular bookings site. My heart sank when I noticed it was the Hotel Shumen, but it was for only 2 nights and it was very cheap.
Hotel Shumen was obviously built in Soviet times but has been refurbished to a high standard since.
This hotel is huge and therefore has so many staff to service it. I can’t work out how they make any money as they have 3 restaurants and a bar, lots of large rooms, a swimming pool and a guarded car park – all they need is customers.
The bar sold us good quality drinks and cream cakes at a lower price than outside!
We had booked a twin room, but for the same price we were given 2 double rooms, complete with all mod cons, nice views and even bowls of fresh fruit.
The beds were large and comfortable, the rooms were clean and well maintained and heated up quickly. The bathrooms were clean, had plenty of new towels and a large selection of give away products.
These rooms were the best I had seen during my 5 week trip.
The restaurants were pleasant and with good quality food, again cheaper than outside the hotel! One restaurant has spectacular views over the whole town.
So if you have a reason to visit Shumen, give the Shumen Hotel a chance – you may be pleasantly surprised.

I visited this hotel last November. My client booked me in again this year. Big Mistake.
The reception was unfriendly.
The automatic lighting in the corridors was dim.
There was no heating in the corridors.
On entering the room, it was cold. The heating had not been switched on.
The trays for the buffet breakfast were only lukewarm.
The drinks from the dispenser were only lukewarm
Even worse, it seemed like the trays has not been cleaned for several days.
Finally, the porter watched me struggle with my cases, before offering any assistance.
I have told my client never to book me into this hotel again

Room Tip: "Not possible"

Although the rooms & hallways have been renovated, the pool is terrible! I nearly broke my leg just walking down the stairs to it because the management was too cheap to turn the lights on
! The parking lot charges you 3 leva per day & there is a huge broken trench you have to drive over to get to it.

The bar knows nothing about making cocktails as they just pour something out of a bottle & call it a cocktail-horrible stuff.

The dressing rooms for the pool were dirty & stank & the beds were the worst beds we have ever slept in in any hotel in the world! They are foam & are the same ones they had in 1989 when we stayed here.

To have a dark, cold, unlit & cold pool in 2011 at a 4 star hotel is simply unbelievable.

Room chairs are about 18 inches off the ground & obviously designed for midgets or kids.

After becoming stuck in an elevator here it took them 20 minutes to pry open the door w/ a crowbar. No apology was given.

This place should have 2 or 3 stars maximum. The only saving graces are that it is quiet & near the Tombul Mosque, The Mehana restaurant is good and reasonable too. Other than this, we would never stay here again.

With Hotel Shumen it is either terrible or wonderful-- no in between. You are greeted by a gray relic of the end of the communist era. The location is not good, the hallways are dark and musty, the public areas seem as if Gorby and Reagan are still in power. The pool is dank and freezing cold-- The lights are turned off everywhere (to save power?) The front desk staff is as cold as the pool water.

That is the bad---- The good is great!

Our Lux room was wonderful. Comfy bed, great shower, modern furnishings and very clean. We ate at the traditional restaurant and it was also amazing! Great prices and the best food we have had in Bulgaria. Oh---awesome fast wifi too!

We also must praise Andrei-- the IT manager, and our driver. He was incredible.

A quirky stay---with a distinctively RED feel

Room Tip: You want to be sure to get the LUX rooms

The hotel is an ugly grey concrete building, with dark long corridors.
The rooms are clean but beds are old and you "sink" into them.
Hotel restaurant is cheap and very good !!
Swimming pool (indoors) cold and not inviting at all.
Town streets are not maintained and not lit at night.
