Selva Negro is a beautiful cloud forest with great accomodations. They have a diversity of options, but the cabins are extremely nice. Lots of activities such as a coffee plantation tour, hiking, watching monkeys, etc. Good food and great staff. Recommend to everyone

Just got back from Selva Negra and had the most incredible time. I went to tour the coffee plantation, but the sustainable farm was the hit. You would tour one section where the farm animals were and then see how the farm was powered by hydroelectricity. All aspects of the farm were shown from composting to the very complex growing and producing of the coffee. Even more than the farming was the tropical rainforest where you could here the howler monkeys, see toucans, and if you were lucky see a sloth. The website doesn't do the place justice its like "neverland" in the movie 'Hook" without the bratty kids.

After a couple of days traveling and touring the big cities of Nicaragua , it was so nice to find a place so secluded and in touch with nature. Our rooms were small brick like cabins. Very Clean and with Running Hot water ! There were trails to explore up the mountains into the rain forest..... where we saw and heard the Howler Monkeys! The restaurant had a nice selection on their menu. The prices were very reasonable and the food very tasty. The service was a bit slow when they were busy..... but we didn't mind , as we were on holidays and had no place to go, but to enjoy the view of the lake and the birds. We would highly recommend this place if you need a break from the real world!

Another traveler recommended this hotel, later found she had a room which had been updated. Our windows had been painted shut ... BUT, a member of the amazing staff was there with a hammer in moments they were opened to the cool mountain air. Staff at the resturant was also terrific ... although the food was ordinary. Everything just looked a bit worn. Which I guess it is, since the hotel is a very popular spot. To recommend would be tricky .... if you are looking for a spot in the area ... yes, but I wouldn't recommend it for a destination.

This owner managed facility is an absolute jewel in the rough when traveling or vacationing in rural Nicaragua. As a farmer, I was completely blown away by the farming operations. Most impressive, the employees of Selva Negra have extraordinary opportunities for personal sustainability and live in community with their own families, I really appreciated this aspect of their business and wish I was part of this family. The owners were very open to authentic conversation with us and accomodated our needs in a way that felt like friendship. I highly recommend a visit to this plantation and urge travelers to take the tour. Our tour guide was refreshingly as honest and authentic and as 'real' as the owners. You will find rest and relaxation and education, all while participating in an experience that is truly sustaining its community members.

We spent one night here and the tour of the coffee plantation was worthwhile. However, the rooms are only average and the prices are very high...especially for food. If we had it to do over, we would take the tour and stay in Matagalpa for the night. We wanted to walk the trails on the plantation which is why we spent the night and the trails weren't worth it. Didn't really see birds or wildlife eventhough we took them in the early morning.

We have visited Selva Negra for day trips 4-5 timesin the last 2 years. Restaurant will never receive any star, but the food is O.K.
Last time we wanted to stay overnight with our boys of 8 and 6 in a 2 bedroom bungalow.
Had some fun horseback riding in the afternoon, some walk in the rainforest and after dinner we were ready to retire.
As soon as we enterd the bungalow the bad musty odor of mildew just hit us. What finished the overnight stay was the lack of hot water. We packed up and left back to Managua.
The price we had to pay did not match the price advertised on their webpage.
We will not return here again.
