“Hikers Paradise”
Reviewed June 27, 2008

Very interesting place to stay. Stayed in large cabin with missions team visiting Matagalpa. It is rustic, but what isn't in Nicaragua. Wake up to the sound of Howler Monkeys, hike for miles into the mountain jungles. A small group of us opted for a rugged hike while many of our group took the educational tour of the coffee plantation and sustainable complex. Can be a very educational stay and a relaxing get away from the hustle of Nicaraguan cities and roads. Restaurant was pretty good, if you like German food you should be happy.

German theme comes from German people who started coffee plantation a long time ago, hotel complex built in the 70's as a wedding/honeymoon complex. Worth checking out if you are exploring Central America.

I would not recommend Selva Negra! The food and service was not good, yet we were a captive audience there because it was so far away from Matagalpa. Although Mausi was the most prompt at responding to my emails, I only saw her briefly when we checked in and never again during our stay. The other staff spoke only Spanish and made little attempt to accomodate us. That was particularly true of the horse wrangler, who at first was going to take me on a ride, then told me "manana". The cottage itself was so dark that Judy read her book with a flashlight, and it smelled of mildew -- although it was very clean, as we found all the hotels.

We stayed for two nights a two-bedroom cottage. The rooms were comfortable and clean, with a little sitting area and refrigerator in the "living room." Selva Negra has many things for children to do - a large playground - and swings and swingsets around every corner, animals to chase and pleasant walking trails. We enjoyed a tour of the coffee plantation led by the owner, during which we saw how coffee is harvested and processed. The children enjoyed the pigs, horses, goats, roosters, worm farm, etc. Their parents enjoyed learning about how the farm is run, with great attention to environmentalism and conservation. Food at the restaurant is decent, with Nicaraguan and traditional German choices. We recommend Selva Negra for families with active children who like to explore the outdoors.

We had heard this was a cool place, please don't be fooled! It is really run down and pretty gross.
It looks as if there have been no upgrades since its original building. It has a run down dirty Swiss chalet feeling. There are geese and roosters making noise till all hours of the night. The cabins are very dirty with lots of bugs and some of the worst mattresses I have ever encountered.
There is very little to do up here also, I just sat around reading my book and wandering the grounds till our ride showed up. I would have much preferred to stay in Matagalpa, which is a pretty cool town, than up here.
