“Trails anyone”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2013 via mobile

This place is great for trails and the rooms are reasonably priced. The service on the other hand blows my mind. I can't get over how you can be in the business this long and have such horrendous service. The staff was so rude and the food really flavorless and taste nothing like typical good in Nicaragua.

One of my biggest complaints would have to be the lack of coffee. Your at a coffee plantation and you can't get coffee until after 715 am. Prices for food are so silly it's laughable. Not worth it!!!..but I guess when your staying there you don't have a choice an they know that. Bring lots of snacks and fruit. Sabeco is on your way up and they have fresh fruits and vegetables...your going to need them.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback. All feedback is important and areas where we failed to meet your expectations are important to hear. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed walking around our many trails and enjoyed your stay in our rooms. I am surprised that you found our food to be lacking in flavor. The majority of our guests compliment our food and say that it is very tasty and delicious. Now regarding the prices of our food that is one item that I think some explanation will help. Most of the food served in our restaurant is grown or raised right here on our property using only organic methods. The result is food that is better for the environment and is food that you should feel proud of the way that it was grown and prepared. This does mean that we are not able to price shop for the most inexpensive, less sustainably grown ingredients. However, the result is a dish that is not only tasty but also good for the environment and good for you as well. From the eggs in your breakfast, the meat of our signature hamburgers, to the chicken and barbecue sauce of your dinner you can enjoy a meal at Selva Negra knowing that your meal only had to travel uphill.

We have put some thought into how to provide coffee to our guests before the lodge opens at 7am but so far have not been able to figure out a solution that will work for us and our guests. We will be discussing this at our next meeting and will strive to find a good solution for our guests that are early risers.

We enjoyed our one night stay here. We stayed in a nice room (by Nicaraguan standards) with a lovely view of the lake. The rooms were clean. There was no air conditioning but it was not necessary as the evenings were cool (bring a jacket). This was a great respite from the heat and humidity of some of the other places we visited. Come for the beauty and the serenity and the trails, not the nightlife. The place closes down fairly promptly at 9pm. The coffee tour was intersting and it is amazing how well they use all the resources available to them. The hiking trails up into the mountains were amazing and shouldn't be missed. The food in the restaurant was wonderful and the staff were friendly and accomodating. We heard many compliments on the coffee and the beef.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a lake view.

Lorie and I have visited Selva Negra twice during the last five years- once for five days and again last December for an overnight. We rented a unique and ecologically-oriented little cabin tucked into the forested grounds and awoke to an unforgettable "jungle morning." Waking behind a wall of glass, snug in a comfortable bed - looking out into the forest as the fog burns off - listening to the howler monkeys and a variety of bird songs, unforgettable.. The food is wholesome and well prepared. The coffee plantation offers a close-up of this remarkable industry - the entire property is driven by sustainability and their organic food is very fairly priced as well. The hiking trails offer a relatively safe and contained cloud forest experience. On the first visit I was in great shape and we hiked the trails and even toured the plantation on horseback. I was nursing an injury during the second visit, but there were trails into the forest that were navigable enough for me to enjoy a jungle setting without risking additional injury. Oh, one more thing, we think its great that we can order a whiskey and share a good cigar while enjoying the wonderful service of their outdoor dining area. I was so grateful that I smoked a cigar on both evenings - not one complaint either - possibly I was in paradise?

Room Tip: Rent a cabin back by the Chapel!

Wonderful, beautiful place, you will not regret going there. Loved it and would love to go there again :) If you're a runner like I am, there are so many trails in the forest where you can have a blast for hours.

This is a working coffee plantation located in the cooling altitude of a cloud forest. While there you get a history lesson about the early planters, and see first hand how their coffee is unique with its citrus notes. Be sure to sign up for the excellent plantation tour that culminates with a blind coffee tasting in which you are the judge.
This is a rustic hotel that lacks all the frills, and expense, of a world class hotel. It is about this special place, not the lavish extras you might be accustomed to. With that said, a private cottage for two nights, with breakfast was $242.27, including tax, a bargain in my book.
If your schedule permits, plan you trip at harvest season.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the newly renovated cabins.

My daughter and I visited Selva Negra as a group w/Outreach360. What a magical place. Where to start? First of all, Selva Negra is located in the northern highland region of Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Sitting at 4,000 ft.and surrounding a small lake sits the restaurant, cottages, a children's play area and many hiking trails.

What makes the resort special is the fact it is completely self sustaining. They implement ecological agriculture practices, for example using coffee by-products to produce methane gas for cooking in their restaurant. The farm includes organically fed cows, chickens, quail, etc. The Daily Beast lists Selva Negra as one of the 13 most beautiful mountain retreats around the world. In addition to having an eco-lodge, there is a wedding chapel, conference rooms, a scientific research center, a nature reserve, organic farm and of course the coffee plantation. The wildlife and bird watching is quite extensive....howler monkeys, sloths, reptiles, amphibians and many types of insects and exotic birds.

Be sure to take a tour of the coffee plantation and the production/processing mill...Manuel was an excellent guide, very knowledgable and he spoke perfect English! Walk through the misty cloud forest and listen for the haunting sounds of the elusive howler monkeys...keep your eyes open for the sloths resting in the trees.

Allow several hours to truly enjoy Selva Negra or spend a few days off the grid by staying in the Eco-lodge.

Room Tip: We didn't spend the night, but I imagine there are accommodations to suit any taste/budget. Ther...

the Selva Negra, is a fantastic place to go!!! it is 2 hours out
of Managua, in the mountains and has a cloud forest.
the hotel founded by German imigrants in 1976 is extremely
interesting, whether you stay or do a day trip.
it has coffee tours, a farm tour, hiking trials etc., and is built like
a Bavarian hotel.
the coffee is fantastic, better than Colombia.
i can vouch for the rooms and food, because i did a day trip, but everything else is a winner.
it is about 20 minutes from the town of Matagalpa, which has 100,000 people
and is the number 2 economic area in Nicaragua. it is well worth a day or two.
