“Best place in Matagalpa”
Reviewed February 14, 2013

Selva Negra is a very beautiful and ecologically conscious coffee farm/hotel. If you have the time to visit Matagalpa, you absolutely should! We spent 2 nights here towards the end of our trip and enjoyed ourselves immensely. Take the farm or coffee tour if you stay here - you won't regret it. The hiking trails are well marked and we saw howler monkeys and quetzals a few minute walk from our cabaña. The only drawback was that we had the same server for all of our meals and he was terrible. Truly the worst service I have EVER had anywhere and I have lived and traveled throughout Central America. The food was OK - I felt a bit overpriced compared with the other areas in Nica that we traveled to. Do I still recommend it? Absolutely! I just wish our waiter wasn't so glum. We tipped well and were super nice.

Thank you for staying at Selva Negra on your most recent trip to Nicaragua.  I am glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Selva Negra and were able to take part in a coffee tour and experience our hiking trails.

I am, of course, troubled to hear that the service you received from one of our waiters did not meet your expectations.  Our wait staff, as well as most of the Nicaraguan tourism industry, is adjusting to the expectations of the international tourist.  I would have expected your waiter to be professional and courteous, but in comparison to the average waiter in the United States to be quite a bit more serious.  We are continuing to work with our waiters for them to better meet the expectations of the international tourist and the staff as a whole is improving.  Did you inform our reception desk or anyone else on our staff of our service not meeting your expectations?  Knowing that our guests are unhappy while they are still here gives us an opportunity to ask questions and to make the corrections more easily.

We strongly believe in sustainability and this means that most of the food that is served in our restaurant is raised right here on the property utilizing organic, sustainable methods.  This means that an additional effort and expense is required to produce the food in our restaurant but we believe that this is the right thing to do.

Thanks for recommending us and thinking that it is worth it.  I hope that if you travel to Nicaragua again in the future you will stay with us and our wait staff with get a chance to show that they have significantly improved.

I went with a rental car, easy access, for a day trip only to hike trails; so I can not comment on hotel, restaurant or tours. Entrance fee US$2 (50 cordobas).
However, the trail system is excellent for Nicaragua. There are several trails; you could easily spend all day hiking. Get a basic paper TRAIL MAP at the resort reception! You don't need a guide with you just to follow trails.
I hiked up trails Barrios, Canal and Mosquita, descending on Peter trail. Trails are pretty well marked. They pass thru nice cloud forest, lots of BIG trees. There are some steps made from truck tires.

Thanks for stopping by Selva Negra for the day. We are proud of our trails that provide guests access to a primary rain forest where they can truly experience nature.

One note about the entrance fee. You can pay 50 cordobas (U$2 approximately) per person and enter the property for the day. Or you can pay 100 cordobas (U$4 approximately) per person and this is consumable in our restaurant. Meaning that if you pay the additional 2 dollars per person you can enjoy a cup of coffee, a piece of our cake or anything else on our menu and the 4 dollars will be discounted from your bill.

Thanks for coming to Nicaragua and to Selva Negra.

My family and I stayed here in January 2013 for two nights and after leaving and staying at a very nice place only 10 minutes away in Matagalpa that there are better options for staying in the Matagalpa region and exploring cloud forests and coffee farms. The cabins are okay, the food is okay and the service in the restaurant varies but is generally poor. Before arriving we read many reviews speaking to the bad service and despite the owners pledge to those reviewers that he would correct this it clearly had not worked by the time we arrived. However, its not a big deal to have to wait a bit too long for your food or to stay in a musty smelling cabin - some reviewers seemed overly bothered by this in my opinion. However, there are better places to stay nearby as we learned and you can always visit Selva Negra for the day and do the very interesting coffee tour and hike their trails. They also could do a bit more to clean up garbage around the complex (e.g. dirty diaper lying for two days untouched in the playground).

Thank you for staying at Selva Negra on your recent trip to Nicaragua.  There are plenty of good options for guests in the Matagalpa area and we are one of those options.  I am troubled to hear about the garbage that you found here.  We try very hard to make sure that our facilities are clean for all of our guests.  There is no excuse for someone to leave a dirty diaper in the middle of the playground and our staff certainly should have cleaned that up as soon as they were aware of it.

We have started a training program for our waiters to help them to better understand the expectations of the international tourist.  Our wait staff I believe to be very professional and respectful, however our waiters, and the waiters in Nicaragua in general, are quite a bit more serious than waiters are in North America.  I am sorry to hear that you did not find our service up to your expectations.

I am glad to hear that you found our coffee tour interesting and enjoyed our hiking trails.  We are not the best accommodations in the area for everyone.  We do believe that if you want to stay in nature and experience it from the moment that you wake up that we are the best option in the area.  If you prefer to have other dining options and shopping just a short walk away, then there are wonderful places to stay in Matagalpa that will meet your needs better.

We spent one day here and regretted that we had booked a B and B in the city of Matagalpa and could not spend a few nights here. The scenery is spectacular and the primary old growth forest is magnificent. We enjoyed a home cooked meal in the outdoor dining area and the food included home grown organic vegetables and meat. It was delicious, as was the coffee. We explored the hiking trails, viewed the scenic grounds and the cottages and rooms in hopes of returning. There is a beautiful little "wedding chapel" on the grounds. We concluded our day with dessert and coffee in the dining area, then caught a bus to Matagalpa. We hope to return in the future for a few days of relaxation.

Room Tip: Bring warm clothes, as you will be in the mountains. Ask for a view of the lake and a sunny room.

We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Selva Negra. I hope the B & B that you stayed in Matagalpa was great, Matagalpa is a fun and interesting place to explore. Our chapel is one of the many things we are proud of, its natural setting in the mountain is unique and very soothing. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed our restaurant as we try very hard to make sure that the food we serve is both sustainably raised as well as delicious.
Thank you for taking the time to post, we look forward to the opportunity to host you again in the future.

A coffee plantation that is Smithsonian-certified as organic and bird-friendly. It is operated on a sustainable basis, and this is improved constantly. The eco-lodge is a revenue-generating enterprise that supplements the coffee production and revenues. Lodging ranges from motel like rooms to cabañas, or cottages that are well appointed for the visitor, incl. solar heated hot water. The landscaping is superb, the wildlife, especially birds and small mammals, are darting or scooting across the grounds, in the trees. The main lodge/restaurant is on a man-made lake/reservoir pond that is part of their creative water-conservation efforts. This is located in a cloud canopy setting at about 4,000 ft. elevation. Restaurant food features produce, cheeses, meats and fruits that are grown on their farms, all organic. Cooked with farm-generated methane, under hydro electric lighting from their ponds. And of course, there is the coffee...Selva Negra can be bought at Whole Food Stores.

I got to say i was so exited to stay here but.... We stayed for 2 nights were planning on 3 but it rained the whole time and was super windy. The good points the room was nice and the hike was great and the coffe is good that's about it. The bad points service was horrible I don't speak much Spanish and the waitstaff seamed to just look right through me and our group not a place to drink restaurant/bar closes at 9 so early to bed every night. Front desk doesn't speak any English. coffee tour is over priced 30$ American. I was not happy here if you are coming stay in matagalpa and do a day tour all in all cold windy and horrible service so disappointed

I am sorry that you did not have a good experience at Selva Negra during your recent stay.  December and January are our coldest times of the year but are typically also our driest time of the year.  Unfortunately this late December and early January have been especially rainy and windy which is atypical for us.

Regarding the lack of English speakers on staff, during the day there is typically 3 to 4 English speaking staff working in the lodge to assist guests at check in time, when ordering meals and such.  I am not certain why no one was available to assist you at the Front Desk.  That should not have happened.  We take pride that we hire only local members of our community to work in our hotel, this often means that they are actively learning English rather than proficient English speakers.  Local hiring helps our community improve and we believe is the right things to do.

Regarding our coffee tour we try hard to give our guests different options when they stay with us.  This includes meal options, lodging options and our tours.  We have a sustainable farm tour for US$7. A nature tour in the mountain for US$15 for a 90 minute hike in the mountain with our nature guide.  A Night Walk in the Mountain for US$10.  And the coffee tour for US$30. Our coffee tour is a detailed 3 hour tour to experience the seed to cup trip of your coffee. In the tour you walk into the coffee plantation and get to pick coffee, see the day's coffee measuring and go and see and understand our processing facility and the sustainable efforts that we take to ensure that we produce quality coffee while not harming the environment.

Excellent place, at night rather cold! Don`t forget some warm clothes. Almost autentic german food. Just the Wiener Schnitzel is not original (but some Germans like sauce on it!) Wunderful walking paths and orchidee gardens. you need some time, till warm water is coming out of the tap! It is situated about 12 km above Matagalpa, you find the way, left of a gas station, then it goes op the hill till you see a old tank of the revolucion, than turn right, unfortunately we only spent two nights there, we had much fun spending 2 more.

Room Tip: choose one near the restaurant, some are far away and are dark at night. check if warm water is runn...

Thanks for taking the time to post a review and thanks for spending a couple of days with us. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay so much and enjoyed our orchid garden, our trails in the mountain and our "nearly" authentic German food.

You give some great tips that other travelers should note. Some times of the year, especially in the evenings when it is rainy, it can be a bit cooler than some guests expect for a country in the tropics. So, warmer clothes are probably a good idea, just to be safe. Our water is heated with a solar hot water heater that heats the water for several cabins in one unit for sustainability. Therefore it can be a little bit for the hot water to reach your tap.

Thanks again for staying with us. We hope to have the opportunity to host you on a return visit
