We stayed in a small, rustic cabin. The shower could have been warmer. The beds were truly comfortable. The food was very good. It was very pleasant to sit by the lake while dining. The farm tour was amazing. We really enjoyed hiking on the trails.

Room Tip: The farm tour is a must. It is amazing to learn how almost everything is reused or recycled.

I stayed just one night on my way to visit the coffee farms but it was enough to like it. Selva Negra is the typical coffee farm turned lodge for the eco friendly tourist who enjoys trekking in the mountains and to go on coffee tours. The cabins are lovely and for any size group. My one bedroom cabin had plenty of hot water, a queen size bed and a porch to enjoy the natural view. The restaurant is located in front of a beautiful lake filled with ducks and swans. The food is good, healthy and reasonably priced. You can buy also the excellent farm-grown coffee.

Selva Negra is a wonderful spot for a visit. If you are a birder, the number of Three-wattled Bellbirds will amaze you. At any one time you might hear as many as six birds calling from one area. Show patience, and you likely will be rewarded for your efforts.

Many times I have traveled to Latin America. I cannot ever recall seeing a sloth literally within five minutes of checking into the main lodge, and less than 100 yards away from the registration desk. It disappeared (contrary to popular belief), not to be seen again for the rest of our three-day stay.

We stayed at Chalet Gretel, which was perfect for our family of five (six would have been fine too). There was no odor of mold whatsoever. The beds were comfortable and we had plenty of hot water. To me, what distinguishes Selva Negra’s accommodations were the incredibly friendly hosts, Karin and Don. We were immediately made to feel like one of the family, a comforting feeling for a first-time visit to Nicaragua.

The drive to Selva Negra is on roads comparable (or better) than most any road in the United States. The one-mile drive on a dirt road to the lodge is also in excellent shape. Costa Rica travelers will be amazed at the difference! The forests around Selva Negra contrast to the severely forested lands you will witness on your drive up from Managua. There are many magnificent strangler figs in the forests, and the church on the property is beautifully simple. It would be a fantastic location for a small wedding.

You cannot find a more friendly family atmosphere than what you will encounter at Selva Negra. There is a playground next to the dining area that entertained our eight-year-old for hours on end. It also helped that other children were there during our visit. You absolutely get the feeling that your children are welcome here – even encouraged.

Prices are more expensive than some spots in Nicaragua, but you can be rest assured your money is also going to support their numerous organic farming efforts and tremendous differences they are making in the more than 200 locals who live and work there.

Stephen and Family: Thank you so much for your visit. We truly enjoyed your time with us and will remember your visit for a long time. I was thinking of your parents this week because we're currently working on an interesting project with birds living in coffee habitat that your father might find interested.

We left from Managua mid-morning enroute to Selva Nega. We were pleased to find the roads in good condition with functional signage. We stopped in Sebaco to buy some fresh fruit at a large market place. We got to Matagalpa around 1pm where we had a tasty lunch at a local family buffet style restaurant. We then did some city site seeing and eventually made the 20 minute drive up the hills (not mountains) to Selva Negra.

The grounds are simply beautiful. The reception/restaurant building is situated on the edge of a picturesque small lake. Our cabin, which we found to be somewhat small, but functional was within walking distance of the restaurant. We especially enjoyed sitting on our porch and watching some rather unusual looking animals scamper in and out of the vegetation. The December weather required short/long sleeves during the day and a sweater or jacket at night. It did rain briefly one evening during dinner, but the management provided umbrellas for the short walk back to our cabin.

Selva Negra is a self-sustainable coffee plantation and farm operation. All of our food was organically produced locally and tasted great - especially the coffee. We took a fascinating two-hour tour of the entire operation. The coffee plants are grown in the shade amongst the under brush, which must make it very difficult for the local workers to pick the beans.

There are walking trails originating from the lake area that range from short and easy to long and difficult. Although in our mid-sixty's we opted to go for a horse ride. The weather was gorgeous, the scenery magnificent and the horses well trained. Some of the trails consisted of loose crushed rock which caused the horses to stumble occasionally. It was an uncomfortable feeling at times, a dirt trail would have been better.

One of the many highlights of our stay was meeting the owners, who were delighful! They were so personable and had such fascinating family history stories to tell. They spoke very good English and were so charming in their interest of us.

Selva Negra is the perfect place to rest and relax after making the ardous trip to Nicaragua - sort of a rejuvenation point for the rest of your trip. Also, don't forget to take the mandatory photo of you and your companions on the WW II (?) tank that guards the entrance to the plantation.

Vastly over-priced for what you get in return. Grounds are beautiful but cabins are outdated, need to be refreshed. Very humid inside ... the bed sheets were always wet. We thought we were getting hot water but only cold water came out of the shower head. That's to be expected in Nicaragua in hot climate zones ... not in a damp and cold cloud forest!
Meals however were quite good. Owner Mausie is a nice man. Coffee tour was good. The big problem here is the price they charge for what they provide: in my opinion it's double what it should be. They need to refresh the cabins and adjust their prices.

Thank you for the feedback on your stay at Selva Negra. We strive to provide guests with a great experience and I wanted to apologize that yours was not as good as it should have been.

We have been begun the process of completely remodeling our cabins. The remodeling of the one bedroom cabins has been completed and the process of remodeling the two bedroom cabins has begun. This remodeling includes much larger windows that improve airflow and provide wonderful views of the nature right around you, new furniture made from rescued wood, upgraded bathrooms and a more open floor plan. It appears to me from the picture that you posted that your stay was unfortunately in one of the cabins that was not yet remodeled.

I am glad that you had a nice visit with Mausi and enjoyed the food and our coffee tour. If you happen to travel to Nicaragua again, I would love to take the time to show you our newly remodeled cabins.

Please know that we take the quality of our cabins seriously and we are undertaking a significant process to upgrade them. And thank you again for your visit and taking the time to provide us with valuable feedback.
