Casa Iguana
Reviewed February 14, 2011

My boyfriend and I went to Little Corn Island for a much needed vacation, and stayed 7 nights at Casa Iguana. We rented a Gran Casita, and it was absolutely perfect- 2 futons, our bed, and enough room to stay inside and read, an area to make our rum cocktails, and the much beloved hammocks out facing the ocean. Unfortunately, for night time, there was no light on the back-porch where the hammocks were- we never wanted to go inside! It was so delicious sleeping with the windows open, the fresh breezes coming through, and waking up to the gorgeous ocean and sunrise each day. Every morning we woke up and thought: this is paradise!

Staff was awesome, I agree with other posters- no problems there. We had dinner at the lodge our first night, and while it was good, we are more into trying local cuisine and flavors. One night at the lodge there was fried chicken, another steak... I didn't travel to Little Corn to eat comfort food! Of course, eating outside of CI means carrying a flashlight and having an adventure - so I can understand why people appreciate the convenience. Similarly, the breakfasts were delicous, but again, we would rather try local spots (that were about half the price).

My only true complaint was that the beach right in front of CI was usually pretty dirty... We would end up walking up the beach to sit in front of Elsa's, because they would clean & rake their beach. At CI, the sand would be raked, but only up to a point: if you tried to get close to the waterline, you would be accosted by bottle caps, soda bottles, washed up flipflips, toys, etc. Yes, its not CI's fault that these decaying pieces of plastic wash up on their shores, but its a true downer. If everyone else is cleaning their areas, why couldnt CI?

Overall, a great place to stay.

We began our stay on Little Corn and Casa Iguana (for a week-long scuba diving vacation) with one of the renowned dinners at the Lodge. We sat with a lovely Aussie couple who reported to us that they had spent the past five days on the island and that we were staying on "the Hilton" of the island. Indeed, they were right. The location is prime (a short walk from town, but nestled away nonetheless). Our lovely cabana was set in the trees on a cliff with a balcony overlooking the ocean. With the two hammocks, we enjoyed many an afternoon reading and enjoying the gorgeous view. The windy breeze kept rooms as comfortable as expected on a tropical island.

Whatever the past reviews state about staff and their rude attitudes, this may be a thing of the past. The current staff is very friendly and helpful. We felt very well-attended to during our entire week's stay. The chef makes great meals (and is also super friendly to boot).

Out of all the places we visited and ate around the island, Casa Iguana has the most comfortable amenities (and, thus, is priced accordingly being one of the pricier places to stay and eat).

One curious amenity, however, was the Internet. While C.I. is the most developed resort on the island, it only offers wired Internet (at a whopping $1 per 5 minutes). Other places around the island - less developed - had wifi. Not that we were much interested in the Internet (after all, we were on vacation), but it was a curiosity nonetheless.

We dove with Little Dive Corn, the dive shop associated with the lodge. We had a great time with our dives, much owing to the friendly and supportive divemasters and staff.

Visiting and staying at Little Corn Island is not for the faint of heart. This is not a place for vacuum cleaners and chocolates on the pillows. That being said, if you're in for a comfortably rustic stay, Casa Iguana is a great place to spend a week!

We returned to CI after 5 years and while it is still a great place to stay and our favorite on Little Corn, it appears to be trying to move upmarket especially in the food area where the cuisine has become very "international" and lost the local feeling. It is very good but you could be eating anywhere! We noticed that more guests are going to local restaurants to eat now.
Also, as the deck has been enlarged (a great improvement) the dining at big tables where you used to meet other guests has been eliminated and tables are for 2 or 4. Nice but not the friendly feel it used to have.
The staff were friendly and service was great but it is definitely less sociable than it used to be.
I rated sleep quality lower because we thought the pillows were very thin.
They have internet access on their computers but it is far more expensive than others (Delphines) in town.

Casa Iguana has an excellent staff. Yes, it is somewhat camp-like in that it has colorful, rustic accommodations with outdoor showers. However, you cannot beat its location and fabulous vibe. They have a great bar- ask the bartender for a special rum drink and he'll give you a list of personal concoctions to choose from. They are located in one of the most stunning spots on earth so you are guaranteed beautiful vistas wherever you are. With no cars on the island and spotty internet (at best), you will inevitably find peace, quiet, and relaxation. Oh, and don't miss the coconut bread french toast.

We were on Little Corn Island over Christmas. Casa Iguana is a hidden little gem. The rooms were clean and the staff was really nice. The view from the Grand Casita was so beautiful. It is very quiet and chill. This is a great place if you are looking for relaxation with an incredible view. We loved this place and would recommend it.

One of the more chill locations, I have experienced in Central America. The staff was very accomodating and the view from Casita Grande is pretty special. A welcomed treat if you arrive to Casa Iguana after a rough panga ride from Big Corn Island.

We had a great time during our stay at Casa Iguana on Little Corn Island. The casita was neat, clean and was what we hope we would get. The breakfasts and dinners were good and all the staff were most helpful. If all goes as planned, we will return to Casa Iguana in August.
