A group of five friends, we have just returned from Hotel Picnic Center. As we were there, the hotel is undergoing serious renovations and a new paint job. The location is the picture-perfect tropical island setting, right on the white-sand beach and gentle ocean in front. The rooms are spacious, most with two doubles and a single bed, fan and A/C, decent enough bathroom with only cold water shower.

The thatched beachside gazebos are ideal for watching the sunsets go down and the world go slowly by. This is a really quiet place although Picnic Center draws people from the rest of the island for the restaurant and to hang out in the day because of the safe bathing.

For the price, this place is good value for money as the location is priceless really. Make sure you establish a price first. We paid $40/room double or single occupancy, pre-booked, but someone we met there was charged $50 single "because of the renovations" ... despite the quoted price on their Website. (She moved to Martha's B&B where for $50/room, breakfast was included.)

Downsides were the disinterested service (very much owner absent feeling). My ceiling fan didn't work and was abruptly told to use the AC, which I don't like. I also got an electric shock from the fan but that was blamed on my being wet ... (not true). We had one excellent dinner and one bad one. The breakfasts (not included in the room rate) were so bad (powdered coffee, sliced white bread, no butter) that we had our remaining breakfasts up the beach at Martha's B&B, which were just great with fresh baked coconut bread, good coffee and cooked breakfast choices.

Although we did not stay at the Picnic Centre, because there were no availabilities we had our meals there every day! It's sort of a mini hub on this side of the island, where everyone hangs out.

What you pay for the rooms here is nothing compared to what you get. The location compensates for everything! IF you want something more upscale, stay at Arenas Beach Hotel (80$), just next door and something in the mid range and very pleasant, try Martha's B&B (50$). (see photos) We stayed at both places and I recommend them both, it all depends on your need. Arenas is always empty so, don't even bother booking ahead.

All you need to know about the Picnic Centre is that it has a great vibe and atmosphere, good food and the best beach!!!

I visited Corn Island in April 2009 for Holy Week. I chose picnic center because I was told that the beach it sat on was gorgeous, VERY TRUE. I came with two of my best-friends, an Irish American and a Salvadorian American, as soon as we walked up to check in we just starred at the beach because it was sooo beautiful. We checked in at the restaurant part of the establishment, which is an big open wooded cabana looking thingy, I forget what you call it. The establihsment only has several rooms, we staayed in the cabana that is two levels, we stayed on the second floor. Our room had a balcony that overlooked the beach, it was beautiful waking up to it in the morning. The room by all means was not luxurious, but it didnt matter because we wanted tranquility and a beautiful beach.

Our room consisted of three beds, two full size and one twin sized bed, a shower, toilet (descent size) and of course a AC (yes! which pumped out air like no other) We also had a tv. The room was a descent size nothing big but fairly comfortable, for three girls in their early twenties it was cool.

The hotel had a restaurant and the food was good, not as good as Bluefields or the East Coast of Nicaragua, but good. Of course a lot of seafood which wasnt bad, I had a lobster tail entree for $9, not bad, and it was good. All in all it was good, however they did not have Tona Beer! I was so upset, supposedly they had ran out of it..grrrrr. Haha. We stayed for three nights and four days, the hotel alone for those three days was $100.00. Not bad at all, my friends were satisfied, we got what we paid for, and I would stay there again because the beach was sooo nice and not choppy like the beaches infront of Casa Canada and a few others that were on the other side of the island.

We picked the 'Picnic Center Hotel' on the basis of outdated information in the 2005 edition of the Moon Handbook guide to Nicaragua which made it sound like paradise located on the best swimming beach of the island and a thoughtful owner.

Rooms were $35 US dollars a night including TV, air conditioning and a private bath. The new owner (Robert?) told us the only room he had didn't have a TV which we were ok with. The room was rustic and cell-like, without a shred of art on the walls. One of the screens was ripped so the mosquitoes made it in late at night and feasted on us. The air conditioning did work very well though. After checking in, we were reminded that we should be careful about the security of the room and that the owner was not liable (note - we were very aware of this, but having it pointed out made it seem even sketchier).

The shower was grim and not very clean (no hot water available).

The highlight of Picnic Center Hotel is the fact that it is directly on a beautiful white sand crescent shaped beach with crystal clear blue water. The swimming is great and there is no undertow or big drop off.

The restaurant was a cute open-air thatched roof place and a band played there the afternoon we arrived ("Caribbean Taste"). The food was excellent - $13 for the best grilled lobster ever!

A little love could revive this hotel and make the most of the stunning location. It wouldn't take much at all, but as it is, I wouldn't recommend staying at the hotel, but the restaurant and beach are worth a visit.
