Gary will take you from rio dolce, he will explain you everything about the area and will send you to nice places. His wife is the chef and she make great and tasty food.
The hotel is quiet, nice, great atmosphere.

This was a welcome break from brunos in rio ducle. A mere 5 minute boat ride away, and you are in another world. Very relaxing, the owners spend time to help you plan your activities and transport, and the mexican food is very good there. You can relax on the wooden deck outfront or at the back, where there is also a jacuzzi.

Me and my family booked this by coincidence and I am glad we did!! It is just a little peace of heaven. Maybe not so many things to do, but for a couple of days in this oasis of jungle and water, I don't need much more. The only thing is that a bathroom needs some work, problems with shower, shaky sink, no working lock on an only toillet on the first floor. Food is good, but it can get a bit pricey if you eat there all the time. I see that kayaks were mentioned, it is in fact a lot of money - 100q/4h, for instance on Lago Atitlan price is 5q/1h. Plus there isnonly one pair of paddles for a double kayak... otherwise verympleasant experience in Kangaroo, owner is very helpful!

We stayed at Hotel Kangaroo after it was recommended to us by a fellow backpacker in Flores. As 2 Aussies, we were apprehensive at first about staying somewhere called Hotel Kangaroo but it came highly recommended so we decided to give it a try. We were also tossing up between staying in Rio Dulce or Livingston and I'm so glad we chose Rio Dulce.

Hotel Kangaroo is right on the water of the beautiful lago Izabal and they arrange a boat to come and collect you when you arrive in town. As you ride along the water to the hostel, you immediately start to relax! The hostel is really nice and feels like you are entering someone's home, it is all open and airy and in the middle of nature. The hostel is owned by Gary, an Australian guy who is so nice and knowledgable about the area. He sits you down when you arrive and you can fire him with questions about what to see and do as there are lots of beautiful day trips in the area.

There is a big open communal area to read or chat to people, and chairs and tables right on the water to eat and enjoy a few drinks from the hostel restaurant/bar. The food is really yummy. All traditional Mexican dishes made by Graciela, Gary's lovely Mexican wife. There is also an Aussie burger with beetroot of course!!

The rooms are basic and pretty comfortable, and the bathrooms are kept clean.

We really enjoyed our stay here, it was the perfect mix of adventure (trips to the hot springs, waterfalls, canyons, markets, kayaking and boat trips into Livingston) and complete relaxation and tranquility. The people were great and the service was really friendly. If you're looking to party hard, this is not the place for you, but if you're looking for a beautiful break from the usual hostel "scene", definitely give this place a go. Thanks Gary and Graciela!!

I booked a room in Kangaroo not really knowing where I was getting... or getting into... It ended up to be a great experience. They picked us up for free in Rio Dulce in a few minutes and we had a lovely welcome from the owners.

The beautiful hotel up on pilotis gives acces to a swim in the river any time you wish, or for a dip in the hot tub in the back. I was more than well treated and given the information about the different tours avalaible in the region. The rooms are clean, the staff is more than nice, the mood is calm and sooo peacefull...

They offer a great variety a food, and great mexican specialties...

I'd recomend it to anybody who wants a nice chillin hotel in Rio Dulce..

I'll come back for sure!
