As below reviews state - excellent stay in Rio Dulce. Service, atmosphere, food, Gary´s (owner) helpfulness with all things Central America and Rio Dulce EXCELLENT:

Minor issues:

1 Tab system for food and drinks. As you´re staying in a place only accessable by boat, you are reliant on the hotel for brekkie, sometimes lunch, and dinner. It all adds up. Given that you can´t pay as you go along, keep track of your consumption and be ready for a big bill (relatively speaking for Guatemala) at the end.

2 Bathroom facilities sub par. Very cold showers, often ran out of toilet paper, not overly clean.

3 If booking double room, pay the extra 30Q to upgrade to the superior room. Difference is HUGE. Double room (for 150Q) tiny, stuffy, etc. Superior (for 180Q) huge, airy, pleasant.

Nice hotel, with great staff, Gary and Graciela where extremly helpful. The food is amazing, the aussie burger to die for and the margarita...
The only negative point was the mosquito net, but we get use to it!

A friend and I arranged to stay at Kangaroo late in the evening and Gary, the owner was kind enough to jet over in his boat to pick us up at 10.30pm. His wife cooked a smashing dinner for us, given it was already quite late, we really appreciated it. If you go at the right time you can meet Balam - head chef, great fun, excellent times! Gary also told us of the hot waterfall and the spectacular boat ride up a river- awesome recommendation. Helpful staff, real zeal for running a hotel, a great place for Rio Dulce and for backpackers! Would return there again.

excellent travel base to explore the rio dulce area away from the confusion of Fronteras. Quiet and secluded, hidden in the middle of mangroves. The owners are sweet and helpful, and will pick you up and drop off with their buatsf from Fronteras (rio dulce) if you call them; Food is very good and reasonably priced. The whole place inspires calm and relaxation. I did not want to leave.... Only remark: the bungalow we slept in had a metal roof, which can be very very noisy when it rains (and it does rain a lot in rio dulce), so bring ear plugs.

Room Tip: if you are a light sleeper, prefer rooms on the main house (thatched roof, less noisy when it rains...

We planned on staying for a couple nights, but ended up here much longer due to my having to pass a kidney stone in Rio Dulce! Gary, Graciela, and the staff were extremely helpful, giving me and my girlfriend extra boat rides, advice, and even a couple special food orders for me. I'd never want to pass another stone, but this was a nice place for it to happen as it was extremely relaxing!

This hotel was the best find in rio dulce. After an extreemly noisy night on the water at the tortuga we were thrilled to find this place. The owner was so helpful, picked us up promptly, organized a day trip for us and had tons of recommendations and information on what to do.

The room was good. Very clean, quiet at night and spacious. Nicely furnished as well. As per usual in the region, it has netting or screens for windows so it didn´t provide the most privacy ever but it did provide for a cool breeze through out the night. Great fans as well to keep the heat away.

the restaurant was delicious and we felt like the place was big and spacious. You could meet other travellers or stay by yourself and be quiet.

We really enjoyed this stop and recommend it strongly.

Room Tip: if you want really quiet then get a private bungalow.

We stayed in a little cabin at the back, rather than the main house. It cost a bit extra but included a private bathroom with hot water shower, and a lot of space inside the room. As we were travelling as a couple we split the price between the 2 of us, making it more affordable. It is not as cheap as other hostels you can find, but you come to Kangaroo for the amazing location and great service. It is located water front, on some of the backwaters off the Rio Dulce- transport in and out is by boat. The owner will happily organise any day trips or transport you need, and provides a wealth of information about Guatemalan destinations.
As the hostel is quite small you are treated as part of the family and welcomed warmly to the property. There was a great Mexican restaurant there too. I would recommend this place to travellers looking to relax in a secluded location- this is not a noisy party place. I loved it and hope to return some day
