Ambassador City Jomtien

Reviewed April 27, 2013

I was there with my family as my mum had a semniar together with her colleagues, We stayed at Ocean Wing, the one that close to the beach, and seems to be the most expensive wings (not sure)

the room is decent, simple but meets all the standard, so i have no complaints about it, even though the first room we got, the air-con did not work properly, and TV did not work either, we got a new room anyway and it was fine with that room,

the hotel location, it's far from the centre of Pattaya, where you can go for nightlife, shopping etc, but in the hotel area, there's a market provided , selling local products like clothes and accessories and local thai fruits, plus there are a few restaurants where you can eat, some guests also eat out in front of the hotel at local places just across the main road. The location is good for people who just want to spend time out in the sun at the swimmingpool or on the beach , but i dont like the beach in this part of thailand, it's not that clean. Lots of beach chairs provided anyway.
Personally, dont like the type of swimming pools with the chroline system as provided in the hotel, while new hotels nowadays use salt system, the chroine system was kinda bad for the body skin,

food from the hotel that i had for lunch was just so so , i didnt go for the breakfast , but as my parents said , there were plenty of choices in the buffe, American , Internation , Thai breakfast

All in all, im fine with this hotel. it suits for big tour group or for a big seminar. but maybe soon enough the hotel should be renovated or make something new if they want to gain more rating and population to compete with other big hotels.

I recently stayed at the Ambassador in the Ocean Wing on the 16th floor. There were 8 operational elevators in the ocean wing. They have Wi-Fi, but unfortunately you have to buy it from the business center for 60 Baht ($2-3) per hour. It doesn't work in the room but does so on the balcony and in the lobby. The first thing I usually do is check the room for cleanliness. I found the room to be spotless. The furnishings were painted and in working order although the carpet was faded from the sun. The air conditioner always worked and is adjusted by the bedside console. There was a shower and bathtub in the sea view room. The numerous swimming pools were spacious and clean. The pool towels were old but always available. Although the pool chairs were numerous, at times they were all in use. The pool is near the beach so one could swim in the sea, come out, shower and walk into the pool area if desired. I found the beach to have soft sand, be relatively clean, and have numerous swimmers and sunbathers. In the evening there was a nice outside food court in which one could buy coupons, pick their food from American, Japanese, Russian, etc. cuisine. There was music piped into the area from the inside lounge. The morning buffet was bountiful with Russian, American, European, and Thai foods. There was a Thai flea market on the premises if you wanted to do some shopping, although the prices on the property seemed to be fixed and one is unable to bargain, although the price was reasonable by western standards. There were numerous tour groups but the property is big enough to accommodate them all. I felt comfortable with all the "farong". The atmosphere was fun, relaxing, and international. I will go back on my next trip to Pattaya, Thailand.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view room in the ocean wing

The rooms at the Inn looked and smelled very old. Although it was cheap, i was still not prepared by how rundown everything was. There were also no lifts so u have to carry ur luggage up the stairs. The main perk was being able to access the huge pools and the private beach. The beer garden was also really nice at night.

I was staying at the Inn Wing of the hotel, in which I believe this wing is the oldest building of the hotel (If I'm not wrong, the Ambassador City Jomtien has 4 wings; the Ocean Wing, the Tower Wing, The Inn Wing and another wing i can't recall the name).

The Inn Wing consists of 3 buildings; Building A, B, and C. I was staying at Building A. However, I noticed that Buidling B & C are much in a better atmosphere (new painting and room decorating).

At first, my family booked another boutique hotel, however, due to the peak season during New Year holiday, the rooms are fully-booked and the hotel can only find one room in which cannot accommodate 7 of us so we decided to find another hotel and the Ambassador Hotel was the only one with available rooms.

The first impression is that the building is quite old with dim lighting. The staffs at the front are the students majoring in Hotel management (maybe they are trainees) so the check-in process is quite a chaos. But they are quite helpful.

After checked-in, we were placed on the 4th floor (the top floor) and we just learned that this wing does not have any passenger elevators, so taking my grandmom to the 4th floor room is quite tired.

When we entered the room, it's just a basic room, with two tiny beds and medium-size couch, old television, dressing table, and mini refrigerator. The strange thing is that in this room there are two bathroom in it. I assume that the room used to be separated into two units but later they decided to combine these two units into one unit.

The top bed is nice and clean however, when we look closer to the lower bed, it's old, dirty and not pretty much in good shape (didn't dare to lift the top bed up) . Ants are marching everywhere so it is difficult to put the food on the table.

The bathroom is quite small with a shower. The toilet bowl is old and if you need to answer a nature call (not just pee), then you need to flush it hard for at least 2-3 times.

Breakfast has limited choice; they offer boiled rice, fried rice, one food, egg station (only fried egg available), chicken sausage, buns, breads, butter and jams, orange juice, water. They provide you 2 free breakfast, additional guest will be charged at THB 120 per person.

We pay THB 1,050 (USD 35) per night during December 29-31 which can be considered a steal. However, we can either use the Inn Wing's pools or we can use the Ocean Wing's pools. The hotel can access to the sea directly, however, as it is a big hotel, the beach will be very crowded.

There are the flea market next to the Inn Wing for you to pass the time. The market open everyday from 9-9

While at a conference we stayed in a two room suite in the Ocean wing overlooking the swimming pools and ocean. At one time this was a very grand hotel, but it is now a bit tired. First, what was right. The rooms were clean, the beds comfortable, and everything was freshly painted, but the colour scheme (notably the carpets) was out of the early 1980s. The Pasta Restaurant was first rate. The lobby bar featured good service, decent food and an excellent singer. Breakfasts were quite acceptable - although very crowded. Staff were universally friendly and cheerful. Our room was spacious and the furniture comfortable. There were lots of towels and the usual shampoo, soaps, and the like. Checking in and checking out was a breeze. The problems? First, the air conditioner didn't work - we could not turn it on. The repair person came quickly, but all that could be done was to have it set so we could turn it on (blowing cold air) or off (leaving the room stifling). We could not control the temperature. We wanted to iron some clothes - but the hotel no longer provides irons. It seems some guests unfamiliar with how things should be done ironed things on the beds, burned the sheets and causied a fire! The pool wasn't in great condition - the jacuzzi didn't work and while the water was crystal clear, the pool looked like it might need a good cleaning. Between the Ocean Wing and the shore was an old apparently abandoned area of the hotel - that did not add to the ambiance. Perhaps its size - one of the largest hotels in the world, is in part a source of one of the problems we had with it. To fill its rooms it must cater to large groups and tours. As the economy has slipped, so have room prices and the clientel. For example, in better hotels one does not usually see scantily dressed people of all ages, shapes and sizes wandering around the lobby (think uncovered bikinis and speedos on your overweight parents and grandparents). But here that was normal. Usually when we have major complaints about a hotel it is the staff, the facility, the food, or some other aspect within the hotel's direct control that is at issue. But here, other than the air conditioner, it was the demeanor of many of the other patrons that diminshed the experience. Luckily, these people were on the beach, and in the lobby, but never in the lobby bar or in the Pasta Restaurant, leaving those of us who wanted it, the more refined experience the staff were prepared and trained to provide.

Room Tip: If you must stay here, stay in the Ocean wing.

i stayed on the 14th floor of the Ocean Wing for 6 nights in Nov 12. here is my take of this property.

what i liked about this hotel:
- it has very friendly staff, from the front desk, to the housekeepers, to the taxi service operators. always ready to help where they can.
- the hotel complex is huge, possibly the largest hotel i have ever stayed at. this is a plus point because this gives the hotel a lot of space for various facilities. they have 4 swimming pools (if i counted correctly) of various sizes and moods; i also counted quite a number of restaurants/bars, some of which are open-air while some are housed in their dedicated little buildings, which give the hotel a very spacious and relaxed feel; they also have sports and massage facilities which unfortunately i did not have time to enjoy.
- the hotel also comes with a bazaar which is moderately large, and sells many small items and souvenirs.
- i stayed in a Deluxe room, which is very spacious (see pictures). the ocean wing is served by about 10 lifts, so the waiting times for lifts are always very short.
- the complimentary buffet breakfast spread is fantastic.

what i think the hotel should improve on:
- there is no free wifi (room or lobby), and the only way to use wifi is to buy a prepaid wifi card. i did buy one, but the wifi signal in my room was so poor that at least 30% of the time i could not access the internet properly.
- the hotel is rather old. even in the ocean wing where i stayed, which is supposed to be the newest wing, things look rather old and old-fashioned.
- tv channel selection was limited, with less than 5 channels in English (these included CNN, Fox Movie, and 1-2 other channels).
- housekeeping service can be improved. because some days i left my room rather late, i was still in the room when the housekeepers came. i told them to come again in the early afternoon when i would be out, they said ok, but in the end they did not appear. this happened for 2-3 days. when my complimentary water ran out because i did not get the daily replacement, i had to dial the housekeepers to bring me new bottles. although they agreed to bring the water immediately, they did not appear for a good 20min, by which time i had to call them again.
- the beach area is not a good place to chill out. although they have a private stretch of beach and provide reclined seats for guests to use freely, it is rather small, and the water smells bad. this is probably partly because of some construction work going on at the beach, and also because there is some huge drain not too far from the beach. yet there are a lot of beach-goers swimming in the sea...
- the location is rather out of the way. to get to pattaya city, u have to take a taxi/van from the hotel (this service is run quite efficiently, i have to admit), and the drive takes about 15min. there is nothing to do and nowhere to visit in the area immediately around the hotel -- i would say it is rather isolated.

i would recommend this hotel if you are travelling with your family on a staycation (ie you dont mind hanging out in the hotel most of the time, enjoying their facilities) and dont mind taking the time to travel to and from the city center. otherwise, the food and feel are decent.

Room Tip: this place seems to cater to a lot of conferences and group tours, so expect large groups of Russian...

Staying here for 4 days felt like too long for a stay in this hotel. It is hard for me giving off a review like this, but my expectations were not really met given the aggressive promotions seen for this place and its beaches. For its location, I've seen way better beaches around. I stayed in a room with broken door knob, dirty sheets, and broken windows. On my third day, my air-conditioner started to malfunction. Moving towards the beach, one can see some of the deteriorating fixtures and parts of the hotels. A rather disappointing sight. In the evening, I found it weird that the outdoor areas are dimly lit. The biggest turn off, however, was the reeking canal nearby. I was so disgusted by it that I never braved to swim on the beach thinking that if the canal was that near to the coast, where could be its outlet? I leave the rest to your imagination.

Is there anything great? The food. Its quietness. No more, no less.

Largely, I can say that Pattaya is overrated - it would not even compare the the average beaches in the Philippines. Lots of people, yes. Lots of restaurants and activities, yes. Beautiful beaches, unfortunately, no.

Room Tip: Sunset view is the best choice. The higher, the better.
