After a less than pleasant night at the nearby Monkey Resort we decided to give Baan Koh Mak and didn't regret it. Since the place was far from busy we got the 1200 THB discounted rate - exactly twice as much as the night before, but it was more than twice as nice.
Most importantly we felt immediately at home in those nice, clean, partly Ikea-furnished bungalows. Ours (it looked exactly like the one in the photo) was a bit to the back of resort, but we could still see and hear the ocean from the porch and didn't mind at all. Whoever built the bungalows made a point out of using polished concrete and the way they did it made it almost seem stylish. Especially the Western-style bathroom and shower profited a lot from that. The mattress was still pretty hard (Thai-style...), but new and - most importantly - even. The AC was fine, no TV though.
The premises overall were neatly structured and designed and were kept up very well.As we toured the island later on we saw some other, twice as pricey resorts and though some of them were really attractive they certainly weren't twice as nice. In other words, we felt we had found the best deal for ourselves.
The staff was eceptionally friendly and forthcoming and the food at the resort restaurant (particularly the curries) was quite good with the exception of the BBQ maybe (which we didn't go for). Probably because there weren't many guests we think we saw the same fish presented to us 3 days in a row. Another minor downside were the 4 dogs living in the resort. They were nice enough and sometimes we had fun watching them just standing around in the whitewash for now apparent reason for hours on end, but they weren't very well groomed and made a point of [--] on the lawn.
Be aware that resort services stop around 10:30pm. Actually that's about the same time pretty much everything else on the island shuts down. If you're looking for evening entertainment, your best bet is the Monkey resort, but it's not much of a bet.
