My wife and I spent a week at this Trat resort in late July 2012, and had a wonderful quiet relaxed time.
Our beach villa with spa was clean, comfortable, elegent, and had separate bedroom/lounge, so one of us could stay up late watching DVDs/TV without disturbing the other.
The Director, Caroline (and her gorgeous dog) was fabulous - really friendly, helpful and had plenty of attention to detail.
The food was pretty good, the pool was big enough to exercise properly in, and the beach walks full of interesting wildlife.
The friendliness and service was a joy, and my wife enjoyed plenty of beauty treatments and massages.
I would recommend to anyone who wanted a quiet break, but be aware there's not alot to do outside the resort, though a day trip to the island of Koh Chang is possible.

Room Tip: I would definately pay the extra for a beach villa - sunsets included!

The hotel is rather far from both Trat and Klong Yai. It's a small hotel. Staffs are attentive although they may not be 100% professional. We stayed in two garden villas, which are not by the sea but very close to it. Each of them has a spacious bedroom and a big living room and a toilet/shower room. The breakfast was ok but had limited selections. The pool was nice and the area was very quiet and peaceful. It's not convenient if you don't have a car unless you can arrange the transportation to and from the airport/bus station and don't plan to go anywhere else.

Room Tip: We saw some villas with bath tub outside and they were by the beach. These are the more expensive ones, I suppose.

We live in Bangkok and have a dog, so are always on the lookout for nice places which allow us to bring her. We had a really lovely and relaxing time, walking most evenings with Caroline the manager and her gorgeous dog. We had a bungalow on the beach, which had a generous living area and bedroom/bathroom. The Thai food at the restaurant was delicious and the swimming pool has the best view. We would/will definitely return and highly recommend Centara Trat if you want to escape. There isn't much around, so be prepared for some peace and quiet!

We have just checked out after spending 5 wonderfull nights at Centara Trat. We were treated like royalty by Caroline and her ever smiling and friendly staff. We read that Thailand was the land of smiles and it certainly is. The resort has a great relaxed atmosphere that allows one to truly unwind.

We recommend the resort to anyone who wants to spend some time relaxing in this little piece of paradise.

In some ways the Centara Chaan Talay Resort and Villas in Trat could be a school book example of how not to run a hotel. The question is who is to blame? Located on an isolated narrow stretch of Thai territory close to the Cambodian border in far eastern Thailand, this beach front property has all the right potentials. Although maybe not the prettiest beach in the Kingdom it does offer a good enough mixture of soft white sand, swaying palms and quietness that comes with its remoteness.

The Centara Chaan Talay Resort and Villas in Trat has been designed with a "feeling good" and "being one with nature concept" offering 44 villas. The rooms are all Suite and are definitely large enough. Nice shades of color, over sized beds and a cozy living room. Its main problems are surely not its design but the materials used. After a good 5 years in operation; the high humidity, salty air from the sea and the long tropical rainy season have taken its toll on the wood, bamboo and other materials. The property owners have failed to acknowledge the need for yearly renovations. So as a guest what we find upon our arrival at the hotel is a very worn property looking old and tired.

Unfortunately the decrepit state of the property is not its only problem. Operational issues are a fact. Things are not running smoothly. Housekeeping management fails as floors are dirty, windows are stained, bed sheets are not replaced and rooms where guest have checked out remain uncleaned for days leaving a very untidy impression to the guests. Upon wondering past a beach front bungalow we found bins full of garbage, coffee cups left standing for days and rooms in a state of utter mess.

Staff at the property seems to need some uplift in spirits as the pool boy is yawning out of boredom and other staff are wandering through the property unexcited as if recovering from a manic depression. The friendly General manager Caroline seems overwhelmed by all the problems at this property. She obviously tries the best she can although my advise would be is to walk around the property more often to recognize the basic problems around the hotel.

The nice and mostly very well kept gardens give a lovely feeling and the infinity pool is a great asset. In the end its a shame that a pretty and very secluded little gem like this has been allowed to fade. I give the management the benefit of the doubt and blame the property owners for neglecting there own "house".

Apparent good news is on the way as major renovations are coming and hopefully this beautiful hotel will be restored in its old glory. With this and a little more motivation from its staff and a change in housekeeping management I will look forward to a future stay. And as a suggestion to the General Manager I would like to see the Centara Chaan Talay resort in Trat respond to email requests and lowering outrageous transfer costs with the hotel van (even I understand the Van service is outsourced).

As a sign of confidence in the future and knowingly changes are on the way I will rate this property 3 stars for now. Upon my next return I would be glad to write another review and being able to rate the Centara Chaan Talay resort in Trat a minimum of 4 stars as this is what this property would really deserve.

Management response:Responded July 10, 2012

Dear Sir, thank you very much for taking the time leaving your comment here on Tripadvisor. As we have discussed all issues during your stay in details, I promised to let you know once the renovation has been confirmed. Our owners visited the resort and agreed that the guest areas will be done before the start of the high season.
Our housekeeping team was left for more than month without guidance and my new housekeeping manager started her job with a lot of enthusiasm, not only looking into cleaning details but as well into training her team. I haven’t had a single complain since she is on board.
Again thank you very much for your feedback and I am hoping to welcome you back later this year or early next year to show you personally the improvements made.
Caroline
