We stayed in a deluxe room for three nights all inclusive at the start of our honeymoon. Due to the quality of the roads and the time of day, the journey took us three hours and was pretty hairy at times so we were thankful to reach the hotel. We received a warm greeting from the staff at reception and a fruit basket for our honeymoon.

The room was somewhat disappointing. The decor was pretty old and worn out. The air conditioning was very loud and made sleeping difficult. Nonetheless the room was a good size as was the bathroom. The shower was also good. There was some work going on in the hotel grounds although we did not find this particularly loud or disturbing.

The service at the hotel, particularly the bar was pretty slow although the staff were pleasant enough. The food was good although it did not compare to other hotels we stayed in during our stay in Sri Lanka. However, on one night during our stay the chefs cooked seafood to order. You could go to the seafood bar, select the fish, lobster, crayfish etc you wanted and have it cooked in front of your very eyes. A nice touch.

We found that there were plenty of sunbeds throughout the day whether you wanted to laze by the sea, swimming pool or lagoon. In fact, the place did not feel at all crowded and so people did not fall into the frustrating habit of putting there towels on sunbeds by 7am to get a god spot.

During our stay we booked a river boat cruise and a visit to the turtle hatchery. I would recommend both if you are interested in seeing the local wildlife. It was relatively cheap and too just 20 minutes by car. We got to see water monitors, a variety of birds, monkeys and the turtles. We even got to hold the latter two. The river boat also stopped at a place called cinnamon island where the locals showed us how cinnamon in its various forms are derived. Worth the short trip in my opinion.

I went to Club bentota with my family on 20th April 2013. We reserved a Deluxe room. We went to the hotel exactly at 2.00pm as it was the time that they have given us to check in. We had to wait in the lobby for about one and half hours till we were given the room. Even though we reserved a Deluxe room we were given a superior room(lower than the deluxe room) saying that we have to stay another one hour to get the reserved room.

We did not get a worm well come. Not even the well come drink .

They gave us room 415. That room was horrible both the AC and the refrigerator was not working. And it had 2 single beds. So we had to join them together before we sleep. We complained about the AC and the fridge 4 times to the reception over the phone but they didn't take any action about the issue. So we had to walk to the reception and make the same complain again. The girl who was at the reception was very annoying. She told us that she informed the issue to the maintenance people and asked us to stay in the room until they come. Our entire evening was a waste we waited at around 4 30 pm in our room and went to the reception again to inform them that the maintenance people didn't appear. And we requested the receptionist to keep our key and give it to the maintenance people while we were having a walk to the beach. But she rejected our request saying that she cant take the responsibility. Then we insisted her to attend to our matter. Then she agreed to keep the keys by making a long face which is not suitable for a front desk person.

After the walk we went back to our room and we found that the maintenance was not carried out.so we went again to the reception to inform at around 8 pm and went for dinner. After dinner we went to the room and found out that the matter was still there. My husband was pissed-off and he went to the reception and scolded them. At that moment the receptionist told us that she is not responsible for the maintenance work and she cant do any thing for that. My question was if we have such a problem what we are suppose to do? In other hotels the system is to make the complain to the reception and they will attend to that. But in club bentota the reception is not willing to take complaints we need to talk to the maintenance people to resolve our matter (very funny). After the argument they agreed us to give another room at around 10 pm( not the deluxe but another superior).

We had to wait nearly 7 hours resolve our matter. And our entire evening was destroyed. Im not recommending any one to go to that hotel. We are really disappointing.

Finally I would like to recommend some thing for the hotel management. It is better if you can inform and train your staff members specially the people at the reception about their job. Hotel industry is a sector which provides services to the tourists. Therefore what ever the problems that they have to face during the job they have to treat their customers with a happy face and a positive attitudes. Because the customer is the god.

Even though we have reserved a deluxe room we were given a superior room saying that we will have to stay another one hour to get our reserved room. Even though we waited in the lobby we didn't even get a well come drink.

We were given the room 415 (Superior). In that room both the A/C and the refrigerator was not working properly. We complained 4 times about this to the reception but they never sent the person to repair. Because of this we had to spent the entire evening in the room waiting till some one comes and repairs it. So we missed all the fun in the evening.then we had to walk to the reception and complain about this issue and said we cannot wait any more in the room waiting for some one to come and asked the reception to take our keys and send some one to repair, so that at lease we can take a walk in the beach. Initially the receptionist said she cannot take the responsibility and asked us to wait in the room. then after our objection they agreed to attend the matter while we are out.

we returned to the room around 8pm and the AC and the refrigerator was not repaired, we were very disappointed and complained them again on the same matter. then we went for the dinner and came back to the room around 930pm and was surprised with the fact that AC was not yet repaired. then we had to walk back to the reception again and scold them on this issue. We requested a room change and we were able to change our room at around 10pm.

receptionist was very annoying and the way she handled the complains was very poor. when we complain about these maintenance issue, she was saying that it is not her responsibility and she cannot take any complains.

we normally come for a hotel for leisure purposes and not to get annoyed. the way we were treated was very disappointing and our entire holiday was an utter waste.

This was our first trip to Sri Lanka and we had 10 fantastic days there. The boat ride across the river provides an inspirational start to your holiday. Booking in at reception was quick and easy and we soon got our bearings. The rooms are clean and are quite large. The air conditioning remains on all the while, even when you are out of the room. There are 3 areas where you can relax; besdie the river, next to the pool or just off the beach. We never had any difficulty finding sunbeds and there is no feeling of being crowded.
We loved the food and found it to be of the highest quality. There was a wide range of foods available and the hotel does cater for a wide range of tastes. You certainly won't go hungry! The lobster and king prawns are worth paying a (reasonable) extra charge for on the special nights. There was a fair range of drinks available and the beer and cocktails were quite drinkable. It was good to meet up with people before and after the evening meals.
We had an enjoyable 2 day trip to Kandi, including the eleplant orphanage. The river cruise booked through Luba was very good and we got to see crocodiles and water monitors, as well as snakes and kkingfishers. Luba was a very cheerful personality as were the other guys on the beach. Buy if you want to, but if you don't want to then there's no problem. You ought to try at least one drink of coconut milk straight fromthe coconut. A morning at the local Monday market was worth doing, facebook new jacket but watch the visit to the herb garden - it can become very expensive after the massage! Lulu'sshop was a good experience and the staff were very cheerful and helpful.

Room Tip: Upgrades to superior rooms ars worth it.

I'll have to write a short review in subject form as I visited this place in 2012 so here it is:

The Hotel:
Situated away from the mainland to get to this hotel you have to go through the hotel boats. A really cool ride! The Staff is really helpful, the rooms are very good and clean! It has Cable TV and really cosy surrounding in it.
The Food:
The food was really tasty with a lot of choice. Great breakfast and Great Dinner.
The Facilities:
The hotel had lot of facilities including water sports, racket sports and swimming pool.
The Location:
A great location can arrive through the new highway close to main road though you have to go through boat.
The Beach:
A very clean private beach which no-one can access except the guests. Very nice!

So I've given a small basic review on a great hotel. I happily recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: Get the rooms near the beach with beach access!

This was the first time we've ever returned to the same place for a holiday. We just wanted to crash out and relax for a couple of weeks, so we knew Club Bentota would fit the bill as we'd been 3 years earlier.
The location, between a river/lagoon on one side and the sea on the other, is idyllic and plays its part in ensuring a relaxing and comfortable stay.
The rooms are spacious and functional, rather than plush, but are clean and tidied to an acceptable standard every day by polite and attentive staff.
The level of service is faultless throughout the hotel, from reception staff, the bar attendants, restaurant waiting staff and around the pool. All of the staff we encountered, many of whom we recognised from our previous visit, were polite and, where required, attentive.
The food, as previously, was superb and it was pleasing that their high standard had been maintained.
We've stayed in much more luxurious hotels/resorts but we've paid considerably more for the privilege. If a relaxing holiday, with good food, drink and service and excellent value is what you're after, I can heartily recommend Club Bentota; I'm sure we'll be back at some point.

Room Tip: 1st floor rooms, facing the sea are the best.

We stayed for 3 nights at the end of our Sri Lankan tour, and it was 4th favourite hotel out of the 5 we had previusly stayed in. The good bits...
Lovely beach, great choice of food and always plenty for vegetarians. Nice clean pool and great to see the monitors and palm squirrels running about the place. We had a 2 hour boat ride along the river through the mangroves and stopped at a local ladies house to see her pet porcupine! £17 for 4 of us. Lots of nice trees if you want shade from the sun. Good air con in room. And a nice calm quiet atmosphere after a busy week travelling. We had left our safe open one day and the cleaner reported it immediately to reception and refused to go back in until we'd checked it and signed a form to say all our things were present. Good reassurance we thought. Smiley staff who would get you everything you needed it you asked.

Areas for improvement...
The rooms were smelly, musty and damp from all the heavy downpours I expect. Our room leaked during one of them but nothing a towel on the floor couldn't cope with. Not many sunny areas to choose room, so always moving the bed to find the rays! Music at night was noisy and pretty poor, would have preferred chill out music all night as well as during the day. The place would benefit from an air con dining room to eat in if you choose, especially for lunch as you need somewhere to cool down during the mid day sun.
The all inclusive drinks choice was poor, some cocktails would have been nice somewhere like that, but ok if you like very strong shorts with usual mixers.

All in all a 3 star I would say.
