“Magical plantation bungalow in glorious setting with a magic chef!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 15, 2010

We stayed in Tientsin Bungalow part of a group of 4 bungalows superbly converted from old Tea Plantation Houses. Views are magical, wonderful walks through the tea terraces, it is like being in a Japanese painting!, and the level of care and comfort provided was 5 star. Food outstanding and delicious - breakfast on verandah, brand new swimming pool, better for lengths than playing in, but state of the art, with fruit bats at dusk, and lovely birds and flowers in the garden. Tennis court - clay too. Staff absolutely charming. Mountain bike rides fun. Tientsin has been newly done up and rooms have every luxury - vast colonial style, with huge baths etc. This bungalow is just a little further up the valley - 9 kms. than the others. I can't wait to go back!

We spent three nights at one of the Tea Trails bungalows. The house sits in a lovely terraced garden with a breathtaking view of the Hatton reservoir and the surrounding hills covered with manicured tea plantations. The small hotel has a luxurious charm and the experience is more like staying with friends for a country weekend. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, the staff, as with everyone we met in Sri Lanka, were charming and thoughtful. The food was outstanding.
The hotel is owned by a specialist tea plantation company and they offer a tour of the local tea factory which was fascinating and certainly not a "touristic" experience. We highly recommend Tea Trails for a relaxing few days in the high tea country.

The tea country of Sri Lanka where the Tea Trails bungalows are located is stunningly beautiful. Steep hillsides covered with seemingly endless rows of tea plants leading down to a reservoir lake.

We stayed at the Castlereagh bungalow for three nights and had a wonderful time. The service was attentive, responsive and respectful -- truly 'old world' charm. Our room was very comfortable, spacious and romantic -- particularly loved the mosquito netting that was put out during turn down service each evening!

The food was very good. We had Sri Lankan curry one night and "Western"/ Continental meals the other evenings. All meals were served on the beautiful terrace overlooking the reservoir and mountains.

We also really enjoyed the tea factory tour lead by, Andrew, a fascinating and entertaining man who is a descendent of one of the original British planters. After the tour we ate lunch at the Norwood bungalow and then enjoyed a beautiful, long hike back to Castlereagh along the marked trails.

A truely beautiful location in the tea plantations Sri Lanka. Breathtaking scenery! We had glorious sunshine the first day then rain the next two ( still warm though). Tea trails takes you back to days of old, pure luxury. The service was fantastic, nothing was a problem. The rooms were spacious and cosy. Food was great mainly english so make sure you request your curry in advance! Lots of acitivites available - make sure you do the tea tour and walk between the bungalows. Adams peak was a physical challenge especially in the rain but i'm proud I made it up the 4500 steps!
Norwood was the best bungalow, more private, best staff/service & pool!

1) The setting: gorgeous. you have to see it to believe it. the misty green hills of sri lanka's tea country are so beautiful that upon discovering a footprint on a mountain, local lore decreed it to be Adam's as he descended upon the earth, because surely this place is paradise.

2) The resort/service/food. Extremely, extremely, extremely good service. Staff will go out of their way to make sure you get what you need. Food has to be tasted to be believed. The bungalows strike the perfect balance between capturing the awe and wonder of a bygone age, and providing the most modern of amenities. (including, for those who so require, little handshowers next to the WCs)

3) activities. amazing. the tea tour cannot be missed. andrew, who leads the tour, knows more about tea than, quite possibly, any single person in the world. his grandfather was in tea, his father was in tea, and he managed a tea estate for 4 decades. or go biking, hiking, white water rafting, sailing, or even just plain lazing.

4) value for money. expensive but worth twice the price. If I owned this place I would double the price. if you are considering any kind of getaway (that is not specifically beach related), forget everything and head to Sri Lanka and Tea Trails.

Tea Trails is just as you think it will be, only better. Stunningly beautiful, and fabulous food and service. Mind you it should be at those prices. Only issue with teenagers is boredom, so we went white water rafting (90 mins away) and hired bikes (bit pricey). Tea factory tour is ok, and the tea is out of this world. Would go back, for sure. We were in Norwood, don't believe any nonsense about it being 1960s, it is ultra wonderful 1950s, and a dream.
