I read the reviews so had extremely high expectations...and they were excelled!
I'd like to make special mention of our butlers and the brilliant smiley chef who came and checked a menu with us each day - Nighantha, Janaka, and the very lovely Jagath.

We stayed at Teintsein Bungalow, the furthest from Hatton, and the roads really are rubbish...but its worth it. We visited all the bungalows and each are fabulous, ride between them for lunch or high tea.

We enjoyed croquet and pims at all of the bungalows, and as for those foam pillows on the enormous 4 poster beds, they really are something else. myself, my husband and our son had a really wonderful time.

We spent two nights at Norwood Bungalow earlier this month as part of our visit to Sri Lanka.
Everything about the stay was perfect -from the chef discussing what we would like for our meals to the "bed tea" which was served at our convenience each morning and it was certainly worth the drive from Kandy on winding roads. The . bungalow is set high in the midst of the Norwood tea plantation and consists of five rooms. There are wonderful views over hundreds of acres of tea bushes so we could watch the tea pickers at work. Included in the stay was a guided tour of the Norwood tea factory which was fascinating. All the staff seem so proud of the bungalow and their roles in making our stay as relaxing and pleasurable as possible. We were not surprised that Tea Trails had been voted the Best all
Inclusive resort in Asia and from our limited experience we would certainly recommend a stay in one of the bungalows to anyone who would like to turn the clock back to days of gracious living.

This is what a top class small, boutique hotel should be like. Perfect setting, nothing too much trouble for the very hospitable staff (the chef discusses each meal in person with you), superb rooms and very relaxing, doing as much or as little as you want. A bit of a trek to get there but well worth it - highly recommended.
PS free laundry!

We recently spent two nights with Tea Trails...the first at Sommerville and the second at Castlereagh. Our decision to visit Sri Lanka was rather last minute so we relied on Cazenove-Loyd to make all the arrangements and they didn't let us down! The rooms were lovely ( we had the master suite at Sommerville which was far more space than we needed) and a regular suite at Castlereagh. The grounds on both are exquisitely manicured, the views of the lake and tea plantations spectacular and with only 4 suites per bungalow, the service was exceptional. The staff were very attentive, sweet and genuinely interested in making your stay with them perfect. And the food....delicious! Although I'd stay at either again, we did prefer Sommerville. Our experience there was a bit more intimate. We actually took the train from Gampola right outside of Kandy which I would highly recommend. We were in an observation car facing backwards and the views as you weave your way up and through the mountains were incredible. We had been going, going so took the opportunity at Tea Trails to just chill!

Went with a lot of expectations, hearing from friends and reading about it online. Was simply amazed that it exceeded our expectations.
Reached Tientsin Bungalow after a long drive from Colombo city through winding roads and crowded villages. But it was worth the trip and reached the Bungalow just a little late for lunch. There was no checkin or forms to fillout. The Butlers recieved us as if we were the owners of the place. No worry if we were late for lunch, they had no fixed times for the meals. You can eat whatever you want, whenever you want and where ever you want. It felt like home from the moment we stepped in. There were only 4 rooms in this Bungalow, which is a part of three other bungalows operated under Ceylon Tea Trails. You can choose to stay in different bungalows every other night, but we preffered to stay put here. We will surely try the other three in our future visits.
The chef met us at the Living room and asked for our choice of menu. They dont have a printed menu. You can ask whatever your heart desired- local, Continental, Indian, Italian, Chinese, you name it- he has got it and tastes great too. My daughter wanted Ratatouille and pronto it was there. I wanted pasta aglio olio e peperonchino and got it right away. my wife wanted kow suay and there you go. The chef was young, eager to try out new things and never showed an attitude that he has done it all.
The Butlers were marvellous and each one made us feel very much at home. Only the second day we realised that we did not have the keys to our rooms, because the thought of asking for one never crossed our mind. You wound not ask for your room key, if you were staying in our own holiday home, will you?
Everything is on the house, drinks, tea, three meals a day or more if you like, games, movies, Trekkings, any thing that you want.
The walks in mornings and evenings and in the night was great. superbly maintained gardens, even the gardeners were friendly and courteous.
Had all the meals on the big verandah overlooking the tea gardens and valley shrouded in mist.
The visit to Tea Factory was simply amazing and too good to be explained in words. The 3 hour Tea Factory tour and Tea Tasting was over and you were wanting for more. Kudos to Mr.Andrew Taylor, the fourth generation of the legendary CharlesTaylor who brought Tea to Sri Lanka. Mr.Andrew was too good, his articulation, knowledge, presentation and people skills was a pleasure to watch. He is a tourist destination by himself.
After a great vacation, felt sorry to leave, but made up our mind to return sooner than what we planned. The Visitors Book provided in itself great reading material, from the inputs of all the previous guests who stayed there. Many were repeat guests and you bet, we will be also one amongst them.

Room Tip: Choose the rooms with a side entrance to the gardens, which can serve as a private garden.

We were lucky to have Summerville quite empty most of the nights that we stayed there - of the 4 rooms only 1-2 were occupied during our stay. It is a fantastic little cottage and we quite enjoyed the views onto the reservoir, the brand new swimming pool and relaxed meals on the verandah. The staff are fantastic and were constantly at hand - even woke up at 1am to see us off on our Adams Peak climb (which we would highly recommend as a once in a lifetime experience)

While expensive on first sight, once you add in all the food & drinks and the complimentary laundry, it is not quite as high as it may seem initially!

We visited Tientsin for a drink one afternoon and while nice, we would probably pick Summerville again if we are to make a repeat visit (or Castlereagh)

The Norwood bungalow is a fantastic place to stay with wonderful views over the tea plantations. It has a great pool, croquets lawn and wonderful bedrooms. We walked the area - linking to the other tea trails houses under the same management and that is well worth doing.

The dining room is a little bare and could do with some additional furniture to make it more comfortable - the drawing room is full of character.

Two negative points for us. Firstly, you will be here with your driver who will be staying locally - use him to go to the local rafting experience rather than book via Norwood - they charge Euro 81 per person but pay USD 25 to the rafting company - this level of gouging customers is not acceptable.
Secondly, if you take a cycle tour you will see more of the tea area and this is worth doing but the path back brings you in behind the Norwood staff accommodation where you will see rubbish tips and half burnt plastics and paper. As the whole tea area appears as an immaculate lawn this is incongruous and suggests management either do not know or do not care - either way it is at odds with the rest of the place.

Finally, we arrived by helicopter which is well worth doing.

Thank you for your review of Ceylon Tea Trails. We have looked at the transport charges to the rafting location and have indeed noticed that you were overcharged. I would like to sincerely apologize for this error. Our team will contact you shortly to rectify this.

The footpath behind Norwood bungalow is also used by tea pluckers and school children, making it harder to maintain. Rest assured we will deploy more resources to maintain and clean this area. Thanks for pointing out.

I hope that your overall impression of Tea Trails has not been tarnished and hope that we will have an opportunity to welcome you back.
