Yala is a spectacular place to stay for your safari trip to Yala being so close to the National Park gates. I recommend booking the safari in advance to make the most of your time. The chalets are clean, very comfortable with air conditioning and hot water. We enjoyed the buffet at the restaurant (only US$22) and a la carte meals, but did not rate their take-out breakfast; best to come back for breakfast from the morning safari or just have a packed lunch by the river (same as breakfast, with a few more items and costing more). Warning you have a long wait at lunch before the afternoon safari because its too hot for the drivers so bring your swimwear for a soak in the river. We were extremely lucky to have 3 separate leopard sighting on the first safari and lots of elephants and crocodiles, but no leopards and only a few elephants on our second day safari. You will always see the spotted deers, buffaloes and monkeys. I recommend at least one visit to the beach and a dip in one of the rock pools, the sea is too rough for swimming. A visit to the nearby fishing village is interesting, they are very welcoming, but expect a financial request for help as they suffered great losses during the tsunami.
