“Luxury in the wilderness”
Reviewed June 11, 2014 via mobile

Yala itself in now circa four plus hours from Colombo after the extension of the southern highway. Jetwing Yala is conveniently located around 10 minutes from the park gate. The entrance some how lacks the impact expected from a resort hotel but once you walk you you realize its beautifully constructed round a very location relevant theme. The rooms and bathrooms are large, airy, full of light and beautifully decorated. ours on the third floor had a large balcony facing the ocean. ( I particularly loved the large beds and the open to sky shower area) I think all rooms have a fabulous view of the ocean. You must take a walk across the very private sand dunes ..so so peaceful out there. The staff were very friendly, helpful and always with a smile, albeit most seem quite new. The outer deck of the Restuarent is what I preferred for dinner, with the clear sky's above and the constant sea breeze. The menu had sufficient variety, and the food was presented beautifully. The flavors were however somewhat pedestrian. will I go there again...definitely !

Excellent hotel with all the luxury and amenities you could ask for including wonderfully helpful staff! Would highly recommend this hotel and think it's one of the best I've stayed in. Loads of places to relax and enjoy the amazing views. It is also nice and close to Yala National Park so you can easily do Safari's from here. I'd definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: I didn't actually attend the Spa but heard it was excellent. My room had the most amazing shower...

From the moment you arrive: the blue Indian ocean just over a sand dune; the hammock-style seats in foyer; the huge rooms (shower room has partly open roof so the fronds off roof blow in!) - it's quite unforgettable.
The buffet dinners are cooked outside, and (we came in May as monsoon season approaching) they seemed to be having trouble keeping their cookers alight! Lovely meals, very obliging staff.i
Slightly bleak surroundings with nothing within walking distance, so once we'd visited National Park we remained on site.
My most vivid memory is of waiting in foyer at 530 am with our group for a trip to Nat Park. we heard noises outside...and there were a load of wild boar snuffling about in grounds!

This is new hotel and in an ideal location for Yala National Park visits. The room was in modern contemporary design with separate suitcase storage area and adjoining bathroom. It was a good sized room with a comfortable queen sized bed, sofa, coffee table, dressing table, TV, tea / coffee making facilities, safe and a balcony overlooking the very long swimming pool. The bathroom was huge and featured both waterfall shower and a separate rainfall shower. The big letdown here is the lack of lighting in the bedroom which was probably the worse I have seen in any hotel around the world. I suggest taking a couple of torches with you to help when getting ready for dinner! Even with all the room lighting on you cannot read a book while sat on the sofa. The room has a powerful A/C unit and the bathroom is non a/c which is actually a good thing both environmentally and for the National Park! Don't do what I did - kept my cameras in the room overnight where they became nicely chilled. When we entered the National Park at 6am I couldn't take any photos for 40 minutes due to condensation inside the cameras because they were very cold in a humid atmosphere. BIG TIP: store your cameras and binoculars in a dry place in the non a/c bathroom overnight so there are no condensation problems. Obviously you should still put them in the safe when the room is unattended.
We ate several meals at the bar restaurant which were acceptable but not outstanding. It's best to stick to fish dishes rather than meat as the chefs seem to lack skills with meat dishes. We found that to be the case throughout Sri Lanka. The A/C in the bar restaurant needs to be toned down as it felt like a 20C temperature drop when you entered the room. This also meant all the windows were covered in condensation so you can't enjoy the view from inside the restaurant. We chose to use the outside tables as the temperature inside was uncomfortably cold.
There's lots of interesting wildlife around the hotel to enjoy and a great swimming pool large enough to move away from noisy children etc. this hotel is a great base for the nearby park but they need to sort out the room lighting and adjust the bar restaurant A/C to a more comfortable setting. The hotel can organise a picnic breakfast for your early morning park visits which we found very acceptable. Overall, we would choose to stay here again.

Dear Guest,

Firstly we thank you for writing a constructive feedback and coming out with suggestions which will improve our image.

We being a hotel which has initiated environmental initiatives such as Biomass boiler, RO plant, Solar energy from largest commercially owned solar park, water recycling plant, sewerage treatment plant, garbage composting plant etc. ; have used LED lightings and LED TV in our rooms, there are 9 LED bulbs & LED streamer around the embossed ceiling in bed room. Anyway we will check all our rooms for any electricity failures any of these series of bulbs.

We ‘ll definitely look in to AC issue in rooms but when it come to public areas most guest like to be in cooling atmosphere as outside temperature during this period hit 36 C.

We recruited a new Sous Chef to assist with our executive chef which will improve the quality of our food. Thank you and looking forward to welcoming you again.

With best regards

The warm welcome with a mix of welcome drinks including mixed fruit, chilled beli mal with juggery and some other fruit drink. That came after a chilled face towel infuced with lemon grass oil. Rooms were ready by the time we reached the hotel and made us ease after a long ride.
The ride was good from Colombo to Kirinda and there after there were about 2 kilometers that had a bumpy road and would be better if the hotel can consider about it as i felt the road is only to the hotel and there were nt anyone else living around.
This becomes a bigger concern if you are travelling while you are pregnant.
The rooms were spacious with huge bathrooms, big TV screens and comfortable couches and beds. Although we ordered a triple room we 3 ( we and our daughter who is 8) were able to sleep together on the king size bed comfortably.
The pool was amazingly very big ,, 70 meters long. probably the longest pool i have been. the entire pool is 4 feet deep and secure with kids.
The buffet had a big spread including local and international dishes and several action stations. Wish they had some Saturday night entertainment events like a puppet show, local dancing or similar.
The beach is 2 minute walking and if you go along the beach there is an are with huge stones and the area is so picturesque. The waves hit the stones and make a nice background for the photos with the sun rays coming in between the waves.
Overall good experience at Jetwing Yala.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your review in the Trip Advisor and for the compliments.

These roads are meant for visitors to get in to their destinations without getting lost on the way and being in the buffer zone of a National park one could not expect a better road than this. We ‘ll definitely look in to you food comment as we want our guests to enjoy every aspect of our hotel. Being in a National park, there are certain restrictions when it comes to entertainments such as restrictions on live bands.

We had a weekend supplement during the peak tourist season which we removed during low period. Looking forward to seeing you again.
