“BEST SAFARI COMPANY IN SRI LANKA”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2012

If you want to experience a 5-star Safari in Sri Lanka you have to book with www.leopardsafaris.com ; Noel and his team treat you as you were kings. Furthermore you will have a kind of guarantee (well there is never a guarantee;) to see a leopard. It is an amazing and emotional experience to see this animal! I have seen dozends of people who have been with different companies and all of them have been very dissapointed because they didn't see a leopard.
Noels Team knows perfectly how to cook, how to keep (read) tracks of the animals, how to find different ways trough the huge jungle area of Yala national park. You will have an experience you will never forget and which will always be in your mind for lifetime!!!!

Absolutely brillaint experience. Although the orginal camp site had been washed out by the rains 2 weeks prior to our visit the newly sited camp was very good. All the staff were very friendly and the standard of the cleanliness and food produced was very good. We had 6 sightings of Leopards and saw many other animals. The concern taken by this group for the animals and their surroundings is good to see long may it last. I enjoyed sitting by the camp fire with the latern burning gin and tonic in hand discusisng the sighting of the day awaiting a delicious dinner. Recommend this experience against hotel although it was nice to get back to hot water.

We had a couple of days with Noel and his team at Leopard Safaris.

The accommodation is well thought out and spotlessly clean. There is a full stocked bar and the team rustle up excellent food to a very high standard.

We saw 5 leopards in two days - at least one on every drive. There is a wealth of wildlife at Yala and Leopardsafaris have an ethical and sustainable attitude to ensuring that this will continue to be the case.

Our family just returned from a little more than two weeks in Sri Lanka. One of the highlights of our interesting trip was definitely Noels Leopardsafaris in Yala National Park. Friends of ours went there last year and had recommended us to go, so our expectations were high. Still we were overwhelmed by what we experienced.

The safari itself was amazing. We stayed two nights and during our four safari outings we had 10 leopardsightings. One of which lasted for half an hour. We were following a leopard with our jeep at dusk and got to see it look for prey, spray its' territoy and just casually strolling along the dirt road. We also saw a leopard mom with its' cub sunbathing in the early morning sun. Apart from leopards there was a whole lot more to see; elephants, water buffalos everywhere, birds, a python eating a hare, deer etc. And of course the nature itself. The most interesting sightings are at dawn and dusk. Therefore you have to stay in the national park. During daytime it's a bit of a Disneyland circus in the park with vans, cars and shabby old jeeps basically everywhere honking their horns and with loads of loud talking/yelling people. Of course they scare off the animals. With Leopardsafaris you go our at 5.30 in the morning and at 4.30 pm. Then the park is basically empty, since the other visitors have to leave the site at 6 pm and it takes them appr an hour to go to the gates.

Noel and his crew is deeply passionate about their leopards and the nature. At night you get to hear interesting stories about what they have seen and done in the park during their years there. And it's a lot. Noel does his utmost to make you feel welcome and at home during your stay. And the other guests seemed to be chosen very carefully. It felt as if we had all been chosen to fit together in our group. We had a really great time both during the outings and during meal time. Between meals and outings you just hang around at the camp, swim in the river, read etc. And there's always somebody there to check if you need anything to drink etc.

Our kids are 8, 13 and 15 and all of them had an equally good time. So did we, the adults. Don't expect luxury living during your stay, but everything you need is there. Hot water showers, a chemical toilet, beds with bedlinen, towels, amazing food, drinks and a fantastic atmosphere. It's as good as it gets in nature. And you really feel that you are in the middle of the nature. I have rated the sleeping quality as average, because you're not there to sleep (you get up at 5.15) but as I said it's as good as it gets when camping.

Bring a sweater/wind jacket, sunglasses (not only for the day but also for night when you go home and all the little flies come out and hit you in the eye when you're on the jeep), insect repellant (the sand flies are very persistent), long sleeved cotton tops for night and avoid white clothes at the camp. It gets dusty and dirty.

Room Tip: We travelled as a family and got the family tent. To be recommended

Tented safaris aren't for everyone, but I think this counts as a lifetime experience.

The camp prides itself on its excellent record for seeing leopards. We were there as part of a cultural and birdwatching tour of Sri Lanka and were there for two nights. It was a great experience. The food was prepared to a high standard in generous proportions, with pre-dinner drinks and wine included. The tents were comfortable, with water available to shower whenever. And the atmosphere was great - at dinner to meet the other visitors and hear their stories. It's kept together by the staff of the camps - in particular Sajith, the Camp Director, was there to make us all feel welcome and part of the group.

And the birdwatching... In one day with Sajith (and Rohan from the Yala Reserve Office), we spotted just over 100 bird species - great opportunities for photography as well. It certainly didn't show that Saj and Rohan must do this kind of thing every day - they were totally enthusiastic and professional. An amazing day! And a great team to look after us at the camp when we got back.

We spent 10 days in Sri Lanka and most of us voted our time in the Yala National Park as the highlight of our holiday in this beautiful island. The experience at the camp with Leopard Safaris is something I would recommend. As city folks, we were somewhat hesitant about spending 3 days in the jungle but our fears were allayed by the experienced and attentive staff at Leopard Safaris. In spite of the rain and drizzle, camping with Leopard Safaris was comfortable and enjoyable. It could be the outdoor effect but we thought the food offered at the camp were the best meals we had in Sri Lanka. Because of the persistence of our hosts, we were treated to a rare sighting of the leopard which walked right into the path of our jeep! The leopard did a cat walk before jumping up a tree that was 20 feet in front of us. Besides the leopards, we saw elephants, numerous deers, water buffaloes, wild boar, jackals, crocodiles and countless birds including the squabbling quails, the hornbill and the eagle. Thank you, Leopard Safaris for helping us get in touch with nature in a special and memorable way.

We had 2 short nights at Leopard Safaris last weekend and it was the highlight of our visit to Sri Lanka. The organisation was superb and we were lucky enough to have 2 sightings of leopard. Considering the logistics and the fact that the camp has had to be relocated in the past week due to flooding of the original one, it was nothing short of miraculous that the standard of hospitality was so brilliant. Noel and Cecille were perfect hosts and my particular interest in birds was more than catered for! The food was excellent and I particularly enjoyed my swim in the river! Just be aware that the camp is a good hour from the gates of the park so do arrange your transport accordingly. I just wish we could have stayed longer and would certainly recommend a minimum of three nights.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Only one man has made his home for thirty-five years amongst the world's highest concentration of leopards in the wild. Noel Rodrigo personally guides guests into Sri Lanka's most dramatic landscapes and natural habitats for elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles as well, in the utmost comfort, thanks to his former career as a first class airline cabin manager. Setting Noel's safaris to Yala and Wilpattu National Parks apart however are not merely the Toyota jeeps customized with camera support points and powerful binoculars for every guest, nor the South African tents outfitted with king size beds, en suite bathrooms, cooling units and private decks, nor even the healthy homemade Sri Lankan cuisine and imported wines. "I don't want my guests to feel any difference," says Noel of his elite team, recognized for their expertise by leading travel agents and international publications including Robb Report, Tatler and How To Spend It. In close coordination, Noel and these equally attuned animal trackers and bird specialists lead twice-daily game drives - most see a leopard, often many -- while hornbills, kingfishers and peacocks flutter overhead. "Elephants may come to drink at the waterhole by your tent," Noel tantalizingly warns his guests of all ages, honeymooners, families and friends among them, at his well appointed camps in the Sri Lankan jungle and high upon the Knuckles Range where nature photography lessons, cooking classes and equatorial stargazing are among the additional activities on offer amidst these timeless natural surroundings. ... more   less
