Much more than just a great place to stay

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 11, 2021via mobile
Thanks to our guide Avinka we had five great safaris staying four nights just after reopening this February. The staff made us feel so very welcome during the entire stay.

The safaries are just wonderful, and having a great guide in your vehicle makes a big difference. Avinka can spot animals you would never see and we were even lucky enough to sight leopards on the trees, close to our vehicle, and also running through the field. The wildlife is so exciting that you will have a great experience even if you don‘t see any leopards. We also had a great driver, which is essential if you drive through difficult territory. You are being taken care of the entire time, so even for those who do safaris for the first time, you will always feel safe.

The camp itself is very comfortable, you get everything you can think of, and on top of the great food being served with so much attention and friendliness. You also get wonderful vegetarian and vegan options. They put on bonfires at night, which makes it unforgettable.
When booking and making plans, you get great support from the headquarters, even if it gets difficult since you have to change your plans.
The best thing what can happen to you at the end of a vacation is when you are a bit sad to leave the place, having experienced something to remember forever, and the team does everything for this to happen. Thank you so much!

I stayed just after the border opened for tourists and have to say it was the highlight of my trip to Sri Lanka !

The tent was extremely comfortable and luxurious. Beautifully laid out and exceptionally clean. Such a great night sleep away from the noisy camps that seem to be in the area!

I felt completely safe with the excellent covid procedures in place and all of the team were great at ensuring we were all safe with regular sanitising, feet washing and cleaning.

The food was excellent. The chef prepared amazing dishes with fresh ingredients and extremely plentiful as well. The chef comes out and talks to the guests and was so talented! The bbq on the first night was amazing - social distance style and such a highlight.

The team are great and are what makes Mahoora so special. From Avinka who went out of his way to ensure everyone was looked after, to Michael who always worked so hard and was so friendly and always had a smile on his face , everyone wanted to make everyone have an enjoyable time.

Avinka is so knowledgable and talented with the safaris and is an excellent naturalist. I loved the bird watching and the night walk was great fun! Always willing to go the extra mile and genuinely cared that you were enjoying your time at the camp.

Definitely the best place to stay if you are visiting Yala National Park and also if you want to do the safari!

Thank you Avinka, Chef, Michael and team for making my stay simply the best!

Stayed at this "luxury" camp site at YALA for two nights in the second week of December. Situated around 4 km distance from Kataragama. They will show you the way from a nearby temple and guide you to the campsite. We were warmly welcomed and swiftly transferred to the tents.

We had booked a double tent but they generously offered a family tent with one double and two single beds. The tend were large, had running water with hot water, flushable toilet (not the cleanest) and fans.

The options of food that was available at the camp was limited. Ordering extra food or drinks was difficult since they didn't have any supplies or arrangements to provide such. Teas and coffee was provided at the main lobby at the welcome area morning and evening. Most of the food provided at the site was average to poor quality and I'm eager to find out whether they even had a cheff at their site.

They aarange a game drive each for one night and we were able to go for two drives with 'Dharme Ayya' during our stay. He is wonderful Safari driver and could easily spot the most difficult animal. Yes he managed to show us the 'Kotiya'. He lets us take our own time and was not at all in a hurry. The institute arranges separate game drives to separate parties and I appreciate it rather than having to pack with another group.

The staff lead by Mr. Avinka was excellent. It was no surprise to know that they were understaffed but Avinka and the team made our stay pleasurable.

I sincerely wish that the management will review the shortcomings at this campsite and their other campsites and get ready for the waves of foreign tourists who will come in near future.

Dear Mr Gayanga,

Thank you for your stay with us and for sharing your experience on TripAdvisor. We were pleased to read you liked the safari experience, the excellent service of the staff members who looked into every aspect to make your stay pleasurable and an upgrade to a family tent with (a large tent unit) along with the facilities of hot water too. But we are sorry to hear there was an issue with the flushable toilet and the food.

We’d like to bring to your kind attention that due to covid-19 we are operating with a limited number of staff members including a chef at every campsite. But at times we are challenged with obtaining supplies from dedicated service providers with regards to menus on extras because of this situation. But please be assured we have addressed your comments with the team, and we will look into it ASAP and rectify the necessary after an investigation.

Again, thank you for taking the time to review us and have a nice day!

It was one of the best experiences we had during our stay at Mahoora tented camps. We were travelling with some friends and with their families and all of them enjoyed the stay at the camp site. The staff were super friendly and they were really professional as well. The food served during the meals were always mouthwatering for everyone and it had many choices to select. The night BBQ dinner was one of the great experiences we all had. The naturalists were very professional and always willing to go an extra mile to give you a lifetime experience in the wilderness. The tents were so spacious, modern, clean and they were having the attached bathrooms with hot water facilities. The night walks arranged by them gave a chance to see some nocturnal animals in the wild.

The experience we had was " Marvellous & Unique "
Definitely we will come back and stay more nights in the future

What a fabulous place to stay. We were made so welcome. Tent was great every luxury you could want. Dinner was a bbq with us all sat around a lovely fire a lovely evening and good meal with wine. Later in the evening we were taken for a night walk where we were shown sleeping birds in tree, frogs insects etc. We were with a great crowd of people too. The whole of the staff from the Manager who sorry I cannot remember his name was great as was Avinka our naturalist to Stephen and Manjrela. BUT the best bit for us was on about the last 5minutes of the Safari, we saw what we came for YES a leopard, he was gorgeous and posed for ages for us to get photographs. Our driver and Avinka us two and another member of staff we all went mad once the leopard had disappeared into the bush. We highly recommend this camp. Avinka can we please have the picture of Michaels face please. Chris and Steve 👏👏🙋‍♀️

Room tip: We had tent 17 which we liked but all were good as plenty of space between them all.
