Mahoora Tented Safari Camp Yala
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 13, 2014 via mobile

This is a great place that balances nature and life's luxuries. The food (5 course dinner under the stars, local teas, fresh juices and plentiful snacks on safari), staff and safari jeeps (most comfortable we saw) were wonderful. The tents have all the necessities including ensuite, warm water and power but you are literally in the bush so you need to embrace the odd creepy crawly.

From the moment we arrived at the camp until the moment we left we were made to feel exceptionally welcome and comfortable, as though nothing was too much trouble for the team at Mahoora. On arrival Chauminder explained how the camp worked and how they try to be as ecologically friendly as they possibly can be. We were greeted with drinks and a delicious lunch before we headed off on our first safari. The jeeps were comfortable and Tilanka (our naturalist) and Sajid (the spotter extraordinaire) were very friendly and knowledgeable. We saw crocodiles, leopards, elephants, mongoose, birds, water buffalo, boars and more. After the safari we relaxed before dinner which was a delectable 5 course meal. It was my birthday on the day of our stay and Chauminder went out of his way to make it special, even getting me a birthday cake and having the guests sing to me! All in all, we couldn't have asked for anything more, it was perfect and if we return to Sri Lanka we will definitely visit again as we felt like we gained some new friends as well as had an amazing safari experience.

We stayed for 2 nights. The crew was very helpful and gently. The food was excellent good.
We went on safari and saw a lot of animals (also a leopard)
When we didn't go on evening safari the second day they asked us for bringing us to the temple in Katamagaran and stayed with us to explain everything.
Next time when we are in SriLanka we"ll retune sure.

Just to note that I am a UN diplomat working in Sri lanka for the last 5 months (I have traveled the world). Just came back from having spent 3 nights/4 days in Yala national park with the Mahoora tented safari which was truly amazing and memorable in so many ways. First it is important to have the right attitude as this is not Africa. So expecting something similar will lead to disappointment. The wide range of animals in Africa is so much more especially big mammals. Also all the luxury tents/lodges in Africa are in the parks (this one abuts it) and are stationary, built in. This one is mobile and hence does not have the luxurious extras like pools/big dining halls/built in that Africa lodges have (I have been on safari in South Africa and Kenya). However, this one is just as fun, luxurious and exciting! The service excellent and everyone makes you feel so welcome and comfortable. The tent (I took the best-elite) was what I expected and all clean and comfortable. The food quite good and Australian wine they served me was excellent. The field guide given Mr. Dinal was top notch and he helped in spotting so many animals including leopards, elephants, and all types of birds especially rare ones to see like an owl and quail. I would recommend this place and tented safari full heartedly but of course if you have the open disposition that this is not Africa but beautiful Sri Lanka with its own beauty and charm and lots to see and do. Great going Mahoora tented Safari in Yala. I loved my stay!

Room Tip: Bring lots of mosquito repellant, sun tan cream, good boots, an open disposition.

The Mahoora team are exceptionally friendly, and go out of their way to make your stay as comfortable as possible. They pick you up from Kataragama bus station and drive you into the nature reserve where a welcome drink awaits you in the wilderness. The tents are comfortable, with a mosquito net surrounding the entire bed. The bathroom is clean, and hot water is not always available. There is only 1 light in the entire tent so come with a torch should you need more light. A fan is available in the tent as well, along with all kinds of bathroom amenities. Meals are inclusive in your package and are Sri Lankan and continental - they were okay, nothing great. Dinner is served under the stars and next to a bonfire, again in the wilderness of the jungle so the experience is definitely more exciting for your senses than it is for your stomach. There are 3 safaris in the day - a sunrise safara, an afternoon safari and a night safari - we only went on the afternoon safari and hence did not get to see any leopards (chances are higher in the other 2 drives). The safari takes you deep into the wilderness of Yala, out into Yala beach, and back again into the jungle. Since we did the elite camping, we had our own jeep and naturalist, and hence were able to take our own pace in the safari. Good experience if you are up for an adventure!

We stayed just one night, with two safari rides - one in the afternoon, another early morning. We were very happy with all aspects of the trip - from pick-up in the village, accomodation, safari rides, meals. The whole organisation seemed to be well thought through. We had one guide for two jeeps, which was enough - he was very knowledgable. Recommended!
