My husband and I visited the Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Resort in Beruwela and Weligama, Sri Lanka in September 2010 for our honeymoon. We had continuously heard great things about the two resorts and we weren’t disappointed to say the least; it was a fantastic holiday.

The hotels and surrounding backdrop were absolutely beautiful. At Berulwela there was the warm blue ocean and white sands. There is yoga on the rooftops which gives a spectacular view of the local area. In addition, Weligama boast a wonderfully created forest of trees within which the hotel is cleverly built. The rooms at both resorts were clean and authentic with a different feel.

Berulwela is about two hours south of Sri Lanka’s main airport and largest city, Colombo. Weligama is another hour and a half further south.

We were immediately impressed from the minute we landed and a very friendly driver welcomed us at the airport with a bag of goodies for our journey. The resort was exquisite, located right on the beach with lots of palm trees and wildlife. The ocean view from our room was magnificent.

The staff were not only friendly and polite but went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. They were passionate about making sure the guests had the best possible experience.

The ayurvedic team including the doctors, therapist and masseuse were welcoming, kind and willing to show us around their medical centre. The massage therapy was the best that we ever experienced. That is no understatement having been to Thailand, China, India and England for similar treatments. The 2-person synchronized massages were luxurious, and the herbal steam facials and herbal body packs were relaxing. The herbal bath, where a therapist repeatedly pours herbal water over your body was soothing.

The ayurvedic doctors were very professional and thorough, and they seemed to genuinely enjoy helping their guests. There were some guests that had come to the end of the line with Western treatments and had come searching for a more holistic approach to their illnesses and had found improvement in their quality of life.

All the food at Barberyn was vegetarian but we did not miss eating meat once during our stay here.
The food was delicious and healthy. The food was in abundance and all very appealing and tasty. The fruit and vegetable could be found in large quantities. We took advantage of eating all the exotic fruits on offer especially mangosteen and mangos.

All in all this was a fabulous holiday and could not have expected anymore. We had the most relaxing, healthy and happy holiday and we look forward to going back soon.

For looking for an holiday experience with a difference this is the right address!!! My wife and I have been regular guests at the resort for past 5 years - 2 weeks every year joining us are an ever incresaing number of family and friends!! This year we were 11persons.
We are global travellers for busines and pleasure and fortunate to have the opportunity to frequently stay in all levels of accomodation from top end 6star Maldives resorts to camping on the beaches of Thailand..............BUT our favorite place in the world is Barberyn Welligama!!! WHY?? Many reasons but in a nutshell its relaxing - educational - healthy - fun - friendly - interesting and just wonderful!!! Check out their website
Its not 5star luxury......................its much much better!!!!..................and we are looking forward to another visit August 2011 with our friends and family sharing their holiday with the Barberyn family!!! Mily and her family who manage the resort are wonderful - Dr. Pushpa and her team are magnificent - Ajith head waiter and his merry men are great!!
A holiday you never forget and never regret!!

A lenghty journey from Colombo but well worth it. Perhaps a light aircraft or helicopter would lessen the journey time. Bearing in mind the poor driving standards in Sri Lanka, the Resort drivers are superb.
The Resort itself and staff attention is excellent - second to none!

This place definitely has potential, and perhaps I am comparing it to other great resorts that are targeting health-conscious audience, but Weligama has some catching up to do. I knew that the place is about 5 hours away from the airport, make sure you use a restroom before you leave the airport as you next stop is going to be 2.5 - 3 hours away.

- Location - great, nice beach
- Big surprise - no air conditioning
- Customer service - poor, most staff is not conversant in English, hence cannot help you if they don't understand what your question is; I would normally have to have 3 conversations with 3 different staff members about what time my appointment is ( I mean every day you would run into things like explaining to the waiter that you would like a bottle of water 5 times; tea, juice and water is ALL they serve, it's not like you are picking a bottle of great wine ;-)
- Treatments - good, but the technicians don't use deodorant (on themselves)
- Facilities - treatment facilities need a bit of updating, there is mildew in the showers and baths; as herbal baths are part of everyone's treatment, you will have to get into it
- Kitchen - very good; but there is no juicer, so the juices that are served is a blender version (pulp + water), not very appealing or tasty
- Beach bar - you will get served complimentary juices there (again, blender variety) and you would have to buy water
- Day trips - fun and complimentary
- Yoga - well, there is a 6 am class every day, and on some days there is also a 5 pm one; if you don't want to get up at 5:45 am on you vacation, then you might be our of luck on some days
- Fitness facilities - virtually non-existant, there is a treadmill of sorts and 2 stationary bikes... not very inviting; but of course, there is a lovely beach

All in all, the place is ok, especially if your service expectations are low and you like rustic environment.

I went to this Hotel for taking a treatment of Ayurveda.
I admire this Hotel.
The chef doctor is so serious and has lots of knowledge.
The massage thechnique is high.
The meal is almost vegetalian but served also fish.
Very good meal !
The hotel staff is very kind and helpful.
Far from Airport, but they pick you up at Air port and you can have a little rest for toilette at sister Hotel Barberyn Reef.
Almost of rooms has no Air conditioner it was a bit hard for me who didn't get used to high humidity.
Also suffered by mosquitoes. Because of the rain season.
The manager's wife was very kind and helpful when I had a small problem at my departure. I appreciated her kindness.

An excellent spa. I have been to others and this is more authentic and professionally run. We spent a week at their resort in Beruwela and another week at the newer, slightly more deluxe spa at Welligama. Both are worth visiting, for different experiences. The spas and medical treatment is pretty consistent at both although I preferred the doctors at Barberyn Beach. The spa at Barberyn resort is more intimate and authentically traditional. I thought the food was good at both, but two weeks of pulses was enough! However I did loose two kilos.
If you prefer rolling out of bed on to the beach , Barberyn Reef is for you. Barberyn Resort has more land, is more relaxing and more private. There are good yoga classes, day trips and other activities at both. In terms of service and courtesy, both places can't be faulted. We took the bigger deluxe rooms which were very comfortable although the bathrooms were not super modern. A week is not long enough for this type of treatment. Our conclusions - this was very worth while and certainly good value for what we paid.

spent 12 days here over Xmas before going on to Ella and Kandy. A completely heavenly experience. Loved the authenticity and seriousness of the Buddhist culture and the Ayruvedic treatments. Almost all Germans over Xmas and several woman travelling alone. It is a very comfortable place to do this which is a big plus for solo women. In terms of rooms worth going for a deluxe. Rooms 107 and 101 are really great. People tend to go back for repeat visits and ask for the same rooms. We started in 108 - not so good and asked to move. Excellent tai chi, also meditation led by Buddhist monks and yoga. The man who does the yoga is fantastically good. Many people staying for two / three weeks and you would not get bored. You just sink into the total lifestyle with immense ease. Highly recommended but really important to do the treatments although it makes it more expensive as this is what differentiates it from a top hotel. No alcohol, meat or coffee. Wonderful staff and excellent doctor Dr. Pushpa is the most senior. They give you various pastes, pills and potions to take home with you. They dont taste great but my sense of wellbeing - body, mind and spirit - is infinitely higher than when I went.
