“Great place, great people!”
Reviewed November 2, 2011

This place is fantastic. Small and personal, Aj and his team will look after you well. There are 4 cabanas set back just a little off the beach and a short walk into town (not that we found the need to go). Both being beginners, our surf instructor Tom was very patient and we only wish we had more time to get out there and practice. The food was delicious and the atmosphere fun with everyone eating together if you wanted too. Even if you don't surf it's a great place to just sit back, relax and watch the local fisherman go about their daily lives. Such a great project, we would love to return soon. Wishing the Green Rooms all the very best. Thanks for a memorable stay! M & S

Room Tip: Located on the beach just past Welingama Bay resort. Look for the small green sign.

We loved this place! Clean bright white towels and sheets got it off to a good start. Ajith, the owner was very warm and friendly, he had a lovely group of people working for him and a couple of young local boys who kept my 9 year old son well entertained. They even took him for surfing lessons. The beach is perfect for novice surfing and boogie boarding, and they have a vast array of boards for the guests to use, no charge. I woke on our first morning there to find my son already out surfing. It is a very safe beach, so no worries there.

Breakfast was a choice of fruit salad or omelette and toast and jam too. As much coffee or tea as you would like. They also provided meals throughout the day if you wanted them, with a regularly changing blackboard. All of which were delicious and freshly cooked from scratch. You could put in a request in the morning if you wanted something specific. They even cycled out to the shops for us in the evening to buy us a bottle of wine! (No alcohol provided on site)
We booked a whole cabana, with upstairs and downstairs rooms. They were beautifully but simply made from local and reclaimed wood from the tsunami. The Green Rooms is built on the land that was Ajith's parents house, and is all about regenerating an area that was badly hit. What I really liked was that the terrace/raised area where the seating, loungers and hammock were, led straight onto the beach, where the fishing boats sail in and out every day. There is plenty to watch, we all found it fascinating seeing them unload their daily catch, helped by the locals who have a ramshackle little shed nearby. They welcomes us nosey tourists, poking out heads into the boats and offered us the freshest fish!
There are a little posse of dogs on the beach, each with their own character and story, "Simon" was taken in by Ajith's brother as a badly injured puppy, after being hit no doubt by passing traffic on the road. He was repaired and now provides much entertainment. (Just hearing them calling out "Simon" every so often was pretty funny!
There is a rather upmarket hotel 20 yards up the beach where the staff let us use the pool and free wifi if we bought the odd drink or meal.

If you want to go on a whale watching trip they can take you, we didn't as the sea was a bit choppy, better later in the year. We saw plenty of wildlife from their terrace though, a great big lizard loped past one day, much to the dogs annoyance! We also saw kingfishers every day, and plenty of night time crabs. All-in-all it was a brilliant stay and we were all sad to leave.

Green Rooms is a really wonderful place to stay, in fact i kept extending my time there as i couldn't bear to leave. Run by the lovely Laura and Ajith this place has a real family feel, and the seafront location is ideal. There are just 4 double rooms, simple and wooden with lovely 4 poster beds and fab open air individual bathrooms. When i was there the long sandy beach was very quiet, more fishermen than tourists, and the waves were great for learning to surf. As well as the beach break there's a reef break 5 minutes away by boat that Laura and Aj took us to. We all ate together outside on a long table under palms and stars, so it was great as a solo traveller. Laura's also a great surf instructor and the home cooked food was delicious - lots of fresh fish. Would love to return soon and can't recommend highly enough.
