Jagabay Resort

Reviewed February 3, 2014 via mobile

Arrived at jagabay after 5 days of tough travelling around Kandy and dambulla. Was impressed how close it is the the beach and how quiet this part of the beach is. The staff were very friendly and gave the place a relaxed feeling.

We didn't get one of the front hut style rooms but the ones at the back were good.

The surf spot and main town are a short walk down the beach. But far enough away to feel secluded.

I have read a few bad comments about this place on here but feel the moaning parties probably should have put their hand a little further into their pockets...and gone somewhere else.

We spent two nights at Jagabay and we were pretty disappointed, given the price we paid. It is obvious that they are trying to make things better but, at the time of our visit, the place was still under construction, the food was just passable, and the rooms barebones. One thing I can say is that they tried to keep the rooms clean. Other posts commented on the beautiful beach, but given that we are in Sri Lanka, it is not so special - this whole country is covered with beautiful beaches.

We also went into the Mirissa beach and we were not very impressed there - really crowded. All in all, there are far better beach and accommodation experiences than Jagabay and the Mirissa area. We have loved our time in Sri Lanka, but this stop was our low-light.

If you are an experienced budget traveler who is looking for a 'clean enough' room and minimal amenities, and you get this place for a good price, I would try it. Otherwise, pass on it and look for one of the many other spectacular areas in this country.

After traveling from Hikkaduwa, we were excited to be near Mirissa beach after everything we had read. We knew that the Jagabay resort was not a five star hotel, but we were not expecting what we got! First of all, when we arrived only one of the two rooms we booked was ready. Apparently, the family staying in one of the rooms had car troubles and hadn't checked out. Finally, after waiting for about an hour the room was ready. The room was dark and not very inviting. The resort had a ton of construction going on which we knew nothing about. Also at this point we had gotten used to the occasional stray mangy dog. However, the dogs were out of control here. One dog snipped at my friend when he tried to remove it from his doorstep. We also asked them if we could get some clothes laundered. Big mistake!! They claimed they washed the clothes, but it rained and they decided to put our wet clothes in a plastic bag, rather than tell us they couldn't dry them in time! This all would have been manageable if the beach was nice. Jagabay provides no sun chairs so you are exposed to the hot sun and can only sit on a towel of your own. The water here was not that pretty and apparently on our first day there a surfer reported there was a 9ft crocodile in the water! If you are considering stopping in Mirissa, skip it and definitely skip Jagabay! The biggest waste of time and money!!

Room Tip: Don't stay here. It might ruin your impression of Sri Lanka

The place is peaceful and has four to six cabanas face to sea side. The hotel situated off the town but it take only 100 bugs tuk tuk ride to the town. not a variety of a food here but you always can go to the town to enjoy some nice sea food dishes.

The pool is very small and much of a baby pool. but who will go to the pool when they have a lovely sea. Weligama beach is one of the most unpolluted beach that i have ever seen. you can here the wave sound day and night and its lovely to listen to it.

Room Tip: Please do select Sea view cabanas and do not go for rooms

This is the place to come if you want accommodation adjacent to a beautiful beach and to be able to listen to the sound of the waves during both day and night. The hotel is literally separated only from the beach by its front garden area so sea and sand are right there. Accommodation is in simply furnished rooms and cabanas which are clean. A/C is available in most on request; otherwise a ceiling fan is provided. Mosquito nets are installed. The restauant serves a variety of Sri Lankan and western style meals which are well cooked and reasonably priced. The hotel has a small pool and garden furniture. Free wi-fi is also available in the restaurant area and in many of the rooms. The owner speaks fluent German and English and is extremely helpful.

Room Tip: Cabanas are detached rooms. In the three storey block of rooms, those on the top inevitably get the...

This was our second trip to Jaga Bay and we had to shorten our stay to only three nights because the sand fleas made the beautiful beach only suitable for masochists.
We stayed in a beach front cabana and enjoyed the sound of the surf. The resort is empty at this time of the year, perfect for someone looking for rest and relaxation. The fireflies put on an airshow for us every night and we slept well.
Food: very good, we ate all of our meals at the resort. We ate only local dishes.
Facilities: almost everything worked, a/c, water heater, door locks, decent bed, clean sheets & towels, ceiling fan. One window shutter would not lock. Excellent WiFi in the restaurant.
Dogs: a few and all friendly.
Owner and staff: English & German spoken, very friendly, always near but never pushy, helpful with our couple of special requests.
We will stay there again but only after the beach is sprayed to control the sand fleas.

This was an alternative to a hotel originally suggested by our tour organiser as it seemed a better choice. The hotel is a little way out of town but a walk along the beach for 20 minutes will get you there. The best point about the hotel is its position, right on the very nice, quiet beach. The room was only ok, - why do they leave curtains half on half off, just replace the hooks and make sure they meet! We were having a very early start to go on a whale watch, but we were told we could not have a packed breakfast as they kitchen didn't start until 7.0am but they would make us something when we got back, which we explained would be lunch time or later. On our return when we asked if we could have something to eat, they did make us an omelette, so that was ok. The food incidentally was pretty good, my husband particularly enjoying some roast chicken he asked for.

One thing about the Jagabay I appreciated was the good wi-fi connection, albeit in the dining area. We wouldn't discount staying here again if we wanted to have another whale watching trip, which incidentally is a must if you are in the vicinity, and go with the Mirisa Water Sport company they are excellent (we stayed out quite a while longer than the other boats and saw some fantastic displays by the dolphins as well as the Blue whale)
