We have just arrived back from an excellent holiday at the CPB. On arrival our first impressions were not too good but once you have reached the inside of the hotel you will be surprised. The reception area is large and cool and manned by both male and female staff who really make you feel welcome. In fact all the staff are really pleasant and helpfull and always have a smile on their faces. Nothing is too much trouble for any of them and they will always stop for a chat. The rooms are very spacious but a litle tired. They are kept spotlessly clean by the boys with fresh linen evertday if you want it. You may have to ask for a fridge or a hair dryer but it will arrive if asked for. We had Room 160 which was excellent......right on the side of the lagoon but perhaps alittle far from the main building. The food was quite curry oriented although there was other choices if you wished but always plenty of it. One small critisicim.......the food is noy always as hot as it could have been. Breakfasts were very good with a selection from full english to fruit cereals and porridge!!
The pool is the best that we have encountered. It is very large with very few people swimming and on some days like a warm bath. The entertainment in the evenings is adequate but the local alcohol drinks are below par except the beer. We met some great people there(Hi to the Hitchin girls, Ian & June from Reading and Zhivargo & Wife from bonnie Scotland)
As far as trips are concerned I would suggest thst you use FERNANDO for these. You will find him outside the Hotel gates to left by the Tuk Tuks. He really is the best and will tailor make your trips if you want. He is very knowledgeable and very very helpfull and the nicest guy you would wish to meet. Say to him that Mister Dick sent you and he will sort you out. If you want any clothes made then visit the Tailor Shop which is found by turning right out of the hotel gates and walking about 250 metres. He is very good........I had 2 pairs of trousers and 3 shirts made for £32.
Allin all this was an excellent holiday provided byMercury Direct and one which we hope to return to in the future.

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the Club Palm Bay, what a wonderful relaxing place to be, we travelled with Mercury Direct and flew with Qatar Airlanes this in it self was a good experience no hassle flying, the flight attendants couldn't do enough for you.
We arrived at the Hotel early Sunday morning, with two friends we asked to move to different rooms this was done that night bearing in mind we moved rooms in a Rain Storm, the staff were great they helped us move. The initial shock was the rooms weren't first class but on reflection the staff and hotel made up for this in all other areas, the rooms were cleaned daily and at night the men came and turned your beds back and turned on mosquito plugs, tidied rooms again and laid flowers out on the bed.
The pool attendants always on hand to sort your beds out, and the waiters who were always attentive made you feel special and always ready to have a chat with you, you have to remember what their living lifestyle is for them, they work 18 hours daily. The bar waiters always remember you and what you drink, remember not to order after 12.00 at night as you will get charged for your drinks.
A visit to Mr Stitch outside the gates to have garment s made is worthwhile. We took the Mercury two day trip to Kandy etc, Lucky was our guide he was very informative even though we felt cheated by the quick visit to the elephant orphange, and the elephant ride as this was our main purpose of the excursion but we did visit lots of other interesting places, and stayed in a nice hotel in Kandy, (The staff not as pleasant as those in Palm Bay).
All in all a Wonderful Holiday, it is what you make it, relax and enjoy.

What can we say. We had three weeks of being pampered to the hilt. From the moment we arrived with a welcoming drink and garlands we were made to feel very special. The staff could not do enough for you. Anything you wanted you got!! The choice of food was outstanding and if there happened to be nothing you fancy ask Madura and he got for you. The rooms were clean and very comfortable. Flowers were arranged every night including a WELCOME and a GOODBYE. The early mornings were lovely. To sit outside your room with a cup of tea (tea facilities in the room) and watch the local wildlife by the lagoon. The pool is great. The pool boys will get towels and bedding for you and again are very friendly.

Outside the hotel you can easily get a tuk-tuk to take you anywhere you want at a very reasonable price. If you want to go further afield speak to Susila Fernando Tours (he's the big one with earrings). He will take you anywhere you want and even show you any extras as you drive along. Just ask and he will stop for you to take photos. His prices are very reasonable and all his staff are very friendly and helpful.

If you want clothes made go to Stitch Tailors. He will make you anything you want in a matter of hours. If you have something special which you would like another one of taking it to him and he will do the copy for yhou. He has plenty of material but does not mind if you bring your own. If you go to Negombo market and see Marcus he will help you out with materials (for a small commission of course).

We had a fantastic and very relaxing time. Felt so rested on our return. Would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a very relaxing holiday without people hassling you.

We have just recently returned from a two week holiday at the Club Palm Bay hotel in Marawila on 31.7.07. We travelled with Mercury Direct on Qatar Airways.
On arrival at the hotel we were welcomed with a refreshing cocktail, which was needed after the hour drive from the airport. The hotel is secluded and there is no nightlife, restaurants or bars nearby. So if you want to party this is not the holiday resort for you. However if you want a quiet relaxing and enjoyable stay we recommend this hotel.
The accommodation is very nice, however the hotel could do with a touch of paint and upholstering. In saying that it was always kept very clean. The rooms are massive with wonderful views overlooking the lake.
The staff at this hotel are second to none. They are polite, helpful and very accommodating. Nothing is too much for them and they go out of their way to ensure your stay is an enjoyable one.
The food is absolutely superb. The variety of food is vast and of the highest standard. The chef Kusom Fernado worked on cruise ships and is renowned for his culinary skills and always catered to our requests.
Also the dining room staff were excellent, under the watchful eye of their Supervisor Mandua – who ensured we got anything we wanted. The bar staff were really nice guys, especially Situ & Sureush who were so funny. Fernando our room attendant was very friendly, accommodating, ensured our room was clean and tidy at all times and was very creative in his floral designs left on our bed every night.
There is a lovely gift shop, beauty salon & Jewellery shop (Aida) at the resort, all are reasonably priced. We got a couple of bespoke rings made. Samantha who worked at Aida was a lovely guy who was very friendly & helpful, he also runs ‘Samantha Tours’ which is situated just outside of the hotel and is highly recommended if you want to do trips to Kandy, Colombo etc and works out cheaper than going with the hotel rep or any of the touts outside the resort.
Because of the location if you do want to travel to any of the local towns Negombo or Chilaw you will have to take a Tuk Tuk or taxi so this could get quite expensive if you do this a couple of times a day. However in saying that the Tuk Tuk waits for you, the total cost per round trip is approx £7.00, so this is good value for money.
Next door to the hotel are two tailors, make sure you go to the first one ‘Stitch the Tailor ‘ he makes clothes for a fraction of the price you would pay at home. We had a trendy denim Jacket made for £9.00 (including fabric that he supplied) and a skirt for £6.00. Alternatively you can purchase the fabric from the local shops and show him exactly what you want and he will make to order. However I would not give him any complicated designs as he is a tailor.
Overall this hotel was valuable for money, and we met some really nice staff and hotel workers that went out of their way to make our stay at Club Palm Bay hotel a wonderful, memorable experience. Thank you to Marius Periera (General Manager) who was always willing to listen to any of our concerns.

We had a great holiday in Sri Lanka. It was very hot there - hotter than I expected really.
The Club Palm Bay is a lovely hotel, made up of bungalows set in very well looked after grounds. I was really impressed with the huge swimming pool which was exceptionally clean and warm. The food was quite varied and good, although I was looking forward to something different after two weeks there.
The staff were the nicest and friendliest people we have ever come across and were certainly not just being nice to get tips.
Our room was very good, overlooking the lagoon, with two huge picture windows and was always well serviced. Evening entertainment was good, too.
I was rather disappointed with the beach which was not quite as nice as I hoped - and the hotel does not make much of it, preferring people to stay in the hotel, I think. Also, we were advised against swimming in the sea because of strong currents at that time of year - which came as a great disappointment as I love the sea. I wished Mercury, who we travelled with, had advised us of this. In all other respects we were very pleased with Mercury, especially the 2-day trip (£70) we took with them to the Elephant Orphanage, the Caves, Temple, Tea plantation, Spice Garden, Sigriya and elephant ride. They put us in a 5 star hotel in Kandy (the Citadel) which was really nice. It's a tiring trip but I thought it was really interesting and good value. Our driver was Eddie, who also works for himself, and he was excellent (very knowledgeable, intelligent and spoke good English). He took great care of us and drove his own air-conditioned minibus.
The hotel is fairly isolated so there's nowhere to walk to in the evenings, unfortunately, but it's perfect if you want a restful holiday. Outside the gates, though, is Stitch, the tailor who made clothes for us which were outstanding. A tip here is to take something with you which you really like and he will use it as a guide to make you something similar in one of his materials. He's a good guy!
All in all, a great holiday, and we met some really nice people there.
