“Quiet stay, swimming pool, not many tourists”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2013

Nice stay. Decent size hotel with airy feel. All rooms face the sea. Some rooms have TV. Rooms a bit rundown - some refurbishing would be good.
Note the hotel is in Marawila and not in Negombo.
There are few hotels in Marawila along the beach front. Many residents have start claiming the land and beach.
The restaurants in Marawila are rather pricey. CAWA is good.

Room Tip: Some rooms have TV. Check out the AC is working.

Our family transferred to Marawilla because of the lack of accommodation in Trincomallee. We found a very decent hotel with willing and friendly stuff, nice and reasonably clean rooms and surrounding.
We could use the swimming pool / be carefull, some tiles are broken and have sharp edge ! / but prefered to swimm in the ocean which was right behind the garden. The waves were quite huge but fortunatelly all survived.
We can definitely recommend the hotel.

Hotel Type: This is a single storey beach resort (ground +1). It is in the small to mid sized category.

Location: Quite place in the small town of Marawila, right on the beach. You need to just step 25 odd meters from your room and you enter the beach.

Rooms: Spacious, clean, bright, airy, good quality beds, air conditioned and nice wash room.

Food: Food is quite good. We took the stay plus food package, so it worked out pretty economical also for us. Not so many options for vegetarians though.

Service: Now this was a dicey one. Right as we entered the hotel and were negotiating for the rooms, the guy at the reception got very irritable and we ended up having an almost heated argument. He later apologized and turned out to be very sweet. Most of the staff were very nice, but they seemed very burdened with work (especially the restaurant serving staff), hence they did seem very stressed out. So, at times they needed to be reminded about what we were looking for. But we would like to believe that the service levels at this place are generally decent and ours was a one-off experience.

Despite some service related issues, we had a very pleasant time. Those looking to just chill and bum around the beach or swim at the pool or just read book sunbathing around can definitely look at this place. A word of caution though, the sea is extremely rough, so exercise restraint and caution.

Room Tip: The sea facing rooms on the first floor are good. Insist on getting those, because the staff at the...

Lovely hotel in a beautiful location. Visited here with my boyfriend for a couple of weeks at the beginning of April. The staff were friendly, the service was excellent and an excellent choice of food. The hotel is quite modest, but I prefer a more simple location and I certainly could not complain about the cleanliness or lack of amenities etc. Would stay here again. The beach is wonderful.

My wife and myself stayed at the Sanmali for 15 days at the end of January and into February, 2013. We had a wonderful time here after relocating from another nearby hotel with which we were less then happy. All the staff were friendly and helpful but also allowed us space when we required it. The food also was very good and we were pleased with the service.
The absolute clincher for us though in terms of making it such a wonderful stay, was the view from our room overlooking the swimming pool and out to the ocean. When the sun was going down - watching those beautiful sunsets day after day - it truly felt like paradise. Would certainly go again and would also recommend it highly.

The staff was very friendly, attentive, and flexible. Nice relaxing beachfront close to a nearby fishing village. Accomodations were modest but adequate. A great place to get some sun, sand in your toes, and relaxation. We spent a weekend there adjusting to the time zone on the way to India for work from the US.
Must visit the nearby Tao restaurant if you are there.

We chose to stay at the Sanmali in Marawila for the last 3 days of our holiday prefering not to use Negombo as an airport waiting room. After staying at 5 other hotels on our independent trip around parts of Sri Lanka this was to be our chill out time before returning to UK. We were not disappointed. We were shown to a lovely room on the first floor looking over the pool and the sea. For once we had all the basics lacking in most of the other places which we had stayed in. i.e.. bedside tables and lamps, a fridge, aircon and fan and best of all 2 bath mats so no more wet and slippery floors. This small hotel is one of the oldest in the area and had been well designed with great open plan space on the ground floor housing reception, dining and lounge areas. The pool was clean and the beach beyond the palm trees was entirely natural and unspoilt. Breakfast was fine and on the last day almost by accident I had a Sri Lankan breakfast which I wished I had asked for earlier in the holiday. Dinner was more disappointing as many items were unavailable. The dining room was a bit bleak in the evenings. There was only one other place to eat in this quiet area so we went there a couple of times.

The staff were friendly and helpful. Especially the head of housekeeping who couldn't do enough for us. I would certainly use this hotel again as a resting place near the airport before exploring further afield.

Room Tip: First floor rooms with balcony for the perfect sunset view.
