“Beautiful Garden”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2014

I was able to visit Fort Ilocandia during one of our Medical Conventions.. the garden is very spacious and well maintained... the staff are friendly and accommodating... Rooms need to be improved along with the airconditioning unit... additional lighting needed also along the corridors...

The garden is very beautiful, spacious, green with so many beautiful flower. Room a bit old but it tries to preserve the history. Home to so many beauty pageants held in Philippines. Spanish architectural adds more beauty.

I brought my family to Fort Hell-ocandia on the May Day weekend at the prodding of my wife ... The 10-hour trip from Manila being a test of patience in itself is nothing compared to what's in store for you when you arrive ... Despite being pre-booked through a travel agency, check-in was complicated by snooty and incompetent front desk staff named Jennifer and Kenneth ... Nothing in their vocabulary indicates any understanding of the word "SERVICE" ... if what you ask for was not placed on their cheat-list, they become mechanically inept to process it within the remnants of their miniscule minds ... Example: Their DeLuxe Rooms come standard with a Queen-Sized and a Single bed ... My party consisted of two adults and two teens ... those two neanderthals at the Front Desk stiffed my wife into getting TWO ROOMS ... On top of that, they were applying the standard rate card on the 2nd room rather than the discounted rates the travel agency had charged ... We ended up spending DOUBLE !!! ... I watched the back-and-forth chatter going on and had to grit my teeth so I would not have to intervene ... Not relishing the long trip home, my wife decided to book an extra day so that we can leave early morning ... My daughter, who had been looking at their rate card, suggested we get only one room and merely add an additional bed with a P1,500.00 charge (practically half the price) ... Realizing we had just been stiffed, my wife asked the two (now smirking) attendants why we were not informed of this possibility ... Their answer was cryptic: It was not the "recommended procedure" ...
SOOO, we finally proceeded to our rooms ... AND THE KEYS DON'T WORK ... After much ado (and lots of waiting), the bellboys ran back to the front desk, came back with new ones and the KEYS STILL DIDN'T work ... They ran back to the front desk and came back with a girl who had a bunch of key cards ... She finally found 2 that worked when she got halfway down her stack !!! ... We finally get in AND the aircon in the kids' room barely worked ... An hour and a half later, it still felt like an oven ... Through all this, mind you, apologies from the staff and "Please wait a little, Sir ... " Finally settled in, we went down to the restaurant for some of that famous Ilocano cuisine ... The only thing five-star about that meal was their PRICE !!! ... My driver was getting better food at the carinderia outside his boarding house at less than a tenth of the price !!!
We finally decided to turn in for the day and turned on the TV ... !?!?!? ... The hotel's brochure read 55 available channels, ONLY 15 WORKED ... and more than half of the one working were in foreign languages ... Thus ended our welcome ceremonies at Fort Hell-ocandia !!!
To relive the events that followed would be traumatic to recall ... It should suffice to enumerate them as tersely as possible ... Let the reader can fill in the blanks ...
-- We were checked in as two rooms for four pax but were given only THREE sets of meal tickets (sic) ... When we asked them to correct their mistake, the great Jennifer, front desk attendant, tossed the additional tickets and the counter with a frown on her face and huffed off back into her sanctuary ...
-- There were only towels for three in the rooms ... when we asked for the additional towel, the room attendant wanted us to turn in the used one first (sic)
-- Buffet breakfast was, at its very best, GARBAGE in the words of one American guest ... He asked for scramble eggs and the counter chef told him that they only serve omelettes (sic) ...
-- We asked for directions to go to the beach and ended up in the middle of nowhere ...
-- Before leaving in the morning, we reminded front desk to make sure they put the extra bed in our room for our extra day's stay ... we get back in the evening AND OUR KEYS NO LONGER WORKED !!! ...
You get the picture yet? ... I am 59 years old ... I have traveled to eight different countries and stayed in the whole range of hotels, from the spartan accomodations in Sagada to the luxury of european Villas ... I am absolutely and positively sure that Fort Hell-ocandia is BY FAR, the hands-down, undisputedly WORST ACCOMODATION I have EVER experienced in my 59 years of existence ...
To the reader of this review ...
If you EVER find yourself in the inescapable predicament of having to stay at the HELL-HOLE called Fort Hell-ocandia, understand that you do so under threat of your SANITY ... GOOD LUCK and you have my condolences !!!

This hotel's staff was very accommodating unfortunately they had only so much to work with. They tried their best but was unable to fix the problem. I actually asked for an electric fan but they didn't even pay attention to that request. Even the neighboring rooms had the same problem.

Room Tip: Make sure you don't get stuck in room 575. The lobby was much cooler.

It was a picturesque scene outside the hotel. There were lots of attractions like the mini zoo, 3 different pools and the beach. There are also recreational activities (but with a price). However the rooms are old and the corridors are dark with no air conditioners. The breakfast was not so good with only few selections of food. If you ask for extra towel or toiletries or even pillows there are added charges. Considering that the hotel was pricey and supposedly rated with 5stars I got disappointed with the service.

Don't be seduced by the Marketing of Fort Ilocandia.
A friend and I (with our families) booked a 4 night stay with Fort Ilocandia from 15-19 April 2014
The architecture and superficial external maintenance of the Resort is Outstanding. Sadly that is where it ends. Internally the building is shabby and in places dirty and neglected.
We were tempted to Fort Ilocandia with promises of 5 Star Facilities & Services. We got neither.
Having transported our Golf Clubs from Manila we were told that we must return to Reception in the morning to book our Tee time.On enquiring about Tee times again the next morning we were informed that the Golf Course was closed for renovation. We later found out it had been closed since the end of last year. (Seduction No.1 No mention of the Course closure in their Marketing).
The Tennis Courts have cracked, uneven and dangerous playing surface and the net is very lose and sagging. (Cannot be tightened). We went to a Special Taste of Asia Buffet. Thai, Mongolian, Japanese, Filipino cuisine advertised. We had a very limited selection of Sushi and the rest were local dishes. No Thai or Mongolian to be seen anywhere. (Seduction No.2) The promise of live entertainment in the Palm Bar amounted to a keyboard and a Male/Female Duo. The Female Singer would just about pass in a Karaoke Bar. The Male singer mumbled his way through songs and the keyboard play assisted him by playing loud out of tune backing for him. Most guessed opted for self entertainment in the Karaoke. (Seduction No.3) and it goes on. Service in the Palm Bar was slow and the strength of drinks questionable. The Buffet Breakfast can only be described as a bun fight. If there was a saving grace it was the Red 8 Chinese Restaurant. Good Menu, good food, good service. The room was cleaned on the first morning then not cleaned again we had to ask for clean towels. The quality of the airport transferred bracketed the overall experience by being overcrowded when we arrived. I sat with a case on my lap and a bag between my feet. leaving we booked and paid for a separate van, and got the oldest bone shaker in the fleet. I wouldn't stay here again and I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Rooms were old and dirty, food was terrible - we skipped the free breakfast the second day and headed for MacD instead. The place was like deserted and very dark, and the facilities closed earlier than listed. Cannot recommend this place, it is mainly ment to cater for Chinese tourists.
