Plaza del Norte Hotel and Convention Center

Contrary to what someone else has stated, this hotel is actually quite old, probably around 30 years old because it was built by President Marcos. The hotel is also government-run and so it was quite a surprise to me that the facilities have been well-maintained. It is beautiful and it has excellent facilities.

Unfortunately, the service and food leave a lot to be desired. On our first night, we reserved a table for 11 and we even ordered early. Unfortunately, they forgot about the order. A more serious thing is that my mom is 88 years old, has alzheimer's and she went out of her room at 5 a.m. and started walking around aimlessly in her pajamas. A lot of the staff saw her but no one had the sense to realize she was not in her right mind. She can barely walk but she went up to the 2nd floor and it is so fortunate that she did not slip and fall.

Another problem is that this place is very popular for wedding receptions with blaring loudspeakers which will pierce your ears until 10 pm.

There's a pool, a spacious lobby, a nice patio and deck. The rooms, furnishing were new and clean. We had a lot of bugs in our room due to the onset of rain though. We had to call for some bug spray. We were delighted with the service and hospitality of their housekeeping team. They were a prompt, respectful and cheerful lot. We can't say the same for their wait staff. They lacked training, were inefficient and their inadequacy did not measure up to image of the very nice hotel. There was no clear supervisor during our first two days at the restaurant lobby. On the third day, a Sunday and Father's day, there was a manager who had been busying himself with the physical layout of the restaurant lobby but not us and our orders. There were a gazillion flies and no candle nor breeze from an air cooler could keep them away from the food. Their food taste and quality was substandard. Our Mexican guest ordered a Caesar salad. He found that the dressing was not Caesar but some other yellow dressing - he said it might be honey mustard but is also not quite sure of the taste. Our group liked the portion of their bagnet as compared to La Preciosa (a restaurant in the city proper where we were brought to on our first night for our fill of bagnet, pakbet and longganisa), pumpkin soup, kare-kare and longanisa. But for most of the food we had, even the garlic rice that came with breakfast, we thought them to be bland. An order of pancakes took more than an hour to serve. Their A1 sauce too runny among other things. All in all, their F&B should be improved on to match the standards of the hotel. It did want to project itself as a very nice hotel - it's standard room rates being higher than most in their.

Lastly, when we were asking for directions to go to the city via commute as we read online that one can either take a tricycle or jeepney, they gladly offered their shuttle which was scheduled to be back at 2:15 pm. They informed us that we will be called once the shuttle arrives so as not to miss it. Having checked out after noon we planned on heading out for some last minute shopping, a quick lunch then back to the hotel for our airport transfer. We dined instead in the lobby at 1:45 our food came out. We finished our meal quickly in time for the pick up. A shuttle arrived and we looked out to the concierge to see if they would approach us but no one called us. The lady who had offered the shuttle service to us was gone. A group went inside the shuttle so we figured it was a private tour. By 3:00 pm we decided to approach the concierge and just ask for directions for the commute to the city and the girl in the front desk went inside their office, the lady who had offered our ride explained to us that there was a delay and that the shuttle would be back in 15 mins. We had waited long enough and decided to wait for another 15. It came in 30. It was obvious that the lady supervisor neglected to inform the front desk officers to call us when the shuttle arrived. Make sure when arranging tours or transportation with them to be very explicit. I sent an email to our booking agency the day of our flight to Laoag and called the hotel when we were leaving Manila to ensure that we would be picked up on time. Also, I do hope they improve their F&B it is really a very nice hotel albeit it's location 15-20 mins. from the city.

However, service needs improvement. Staff needs to be trained further. Food isn't very good. Hotel is a bit far from the city center but very near the sand dunes and the Malacanan of the North. Also, weird water pressure while showering.

This hotel is presently named Plaza del Norte. My colleagues and I went to Laoag for a convention last year and this is the hotel our employer chose for us to stay. There is a free airport transfer from and to the hotel. When we arrived, the hotel employees we're very warm and accomodating. What I loved about this hotel are the rooms and facilities. The room was very clean and the bathroom was really spacious with hot and cold water. The bedsheets and the towels were very white, fragrant and clean. Their toilettries are very good too. Each room also has a mini-veranda overlooking the pool. But please be reminded to apply some mosquito repellant lotion before going out (especially at night) since there are many mosquitos around (maybe because there are a lot of plants within the area).

The facilities were very good. There is a swimming pool at the center of the hotel. There is also a chapel and a big convention hall for big corporate affairs. The very beautiful fountain located at the left side of the hotel entrance is an eye-catcher especially at night. There is also a restaurant inside the hotel which provides breakfast and drinks. Expect the servings are not enough to fill your appetite and not enough variety of dishes to choose from (and it's pricy too!). But I strongly suggest to try their longganisa on their breakfast menu.

The hotel is near some tourists spots like Malacañang of the North, Paoay church and more. We have a private van during our tour so I strongly suggest to have one if you really want to go to other tourists spots.

All in all, this hotel for me is a great place to stay.

I never thought that there is a hotel worth staying in Laoag. This is a very nice hotel. The rooms are well maintained. The facilities are nice. The place is clean. There is just one downside, the internet connection sucks. Other than that, everything else is nice. I definitely recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Laoag, either alone or with the whole family.

I booked this hotel online for only 1200+ pesos per night. The hotel is located far from the highway. Private transportation is needed as there are limited taxis and public transportation available. It seems that the hotel do not offer shuttle service to/from the city. Their staff are friendly and approachable.

Their choice of breakfast is very limited and their breakfast serving was little. If they could offer a buffet breakfast it will be better. Food is quite expensive. There was a time we ordered a seafood sinigang and it wasn't good at all. There were more pork instead of seafood on top of that it seemed that the chef used a lot of water and forgot to taste it. During our stay, we have noticed that their pool was dirty. There were no assigned persons to clean it in the morning or at night.

For tourists like us, the hotel was very near some tourist spots like the Paoay Lake, Paoay Church, and the Malacanang of the North. The Fort Ilocandia Golf Course is just across the hotel. If you plan to go to Pagudpud but don't want to stay in Pagudpud, the hotel is just 1 1/2 hr away. The hotel is also 1-1.5 hours from Vigan City depending on which road you take. The hotel rooms are clean. Towels and bottled waters were changed everyday. There's cabled tv and a refrigerator. Just don't expect that there are food/drinks in the refrigerator like in other big hotels. They also offer city tours. For an extra person, they charged us 800 pesos a night. Children do not get free breakfast.

Overall it was a good hotel for its price. I would love to come back and stay in this hotel again.

Room Tip: It doesn't matter which rooms they give you, the quality will still be the same.

Visited some friends in Laoag. Stayed for the very first time in Ilocos Norte Hotel and Convention Center.

The place is new. Looks and feels very clean. The staff are warm and friendly. The rooms are simple but elegant. Had some problem though with the pressure of water in the shower and the hot water as well.

Tried their Asian Buffet, not so happy about it. Good thing the breakfast (iloco-longaniza) was good.

The rate of Php1,500 comes with free airport transfer. If you want this rate, book on-line.

Lastly, the place is very near the Malacanang of the North and about 15 minutes away from the World Heritage Paoay Church. It's approximately about 15 minutes away also from Laoag City.
