Golden Rock Hotel Kyaikhtiyo
Ranked #3 of 6 Hotels in Kyaikto

This hotel has a good location, however it is really a pain to get to. Involves a packed open truck ride up a very steep and windy hill and then a brisk and also steep trek for about 10 minutes (unless you take a 'stretcher' ride for which they wanted $16 per person !). This does not get you to the Golden Rock, you have to take another packed open truck for that !
This was the poorest and yet most expensive hotel we stayed in. The food was incredibly bland, the rooms were OK, nothing special. The whole place had a sort of 'could care less, we are always full anyway' feel about it. All in all, this excursion from Yangon was the one none of us enjoyed. The rock is seedy, touristy and dirty, litter everywhere, and once you have looked at a gold painted rock, then what ? All four of us wish we had stayed at Ngwe Saung beach for longer and skipped this one.

Room Tip: Try another hotel.

Great hotel, lovely landscape and gardens, very hospitable staff and a great manager on location. Highly recommend this for enjoying the mountain views of Myanmar and the environment without tourist trampling across your hotel entrance.

A small hotel about halfway down from the crazy little road to the Golden Rock but quiet and a relief from all the huge crowds. The rooms were very small with two simple but very comfortable beds and a small bathroom. No TV or wifi but good for an overnight. Restaurant was very modest. Hotel had nice views to the Golden Rock pagoda above and was nestled down in the hills with other shrines of worship around it. Sedan chair porters were available if you didn't want to walk the steep road down to the mid- or second staging area for the trucks that hauiled people up and down to the Rock.

This is the only hotel we have ever stayed in where we had to choose our evening meal from the limit restaurant menu on arrival! Hotel's staff friendly, but had very limited English. Hotel food poor - I ended up with food poisoning, but very limited choice food options in this area. Hotel room basic, but adequate for one night. Great location for visiting the Golden Rock.

Firstly, make sure you get of the truck at the right place - which is the Yatetaung village. The hotel is a 10 minute walk up the track from there. We went all the way to the top by mistake and it's a long, hot walk back down and it's more awkward going down than up with heavy baggage.
The hotel is set in pleasant grounds and the entrance is right on the path which leads to the top of the mountain. Rooms are adequate but perhaps a little faded. Breakfast is so-so, but dinner in the restaurant was quite good (there's nowhere else to eat nearby). There's a very nice verandah just off reception which is a good place to sit for a while with a cold beer.
With hindsight we might have preferred to stay at one of the hotels at the top so that we could have spent time around the rock after dark - we didn't fancy going back down the steep path in the dark.

This was unlike the other places we stayed in Myanmar - generally examples of the move upmarket aspiring to resorts like the best of those in the rest of Asia.

No, this is a basic hotel, but if you're going to Golden Rock it simply isn't yet a luxury trip. Everyone takes the truck to the village which is sweaty and basic even if you pay for the "luxury" cab seats. Then you drag your suitcases up the hill to the hotel for 15 minutes and when you arrive the place looks a bit like a 1930s tudorbethan tea room crossed with a brood of Nissen huts. Our a/c gave up the ghost after 15 mins in one room and never worked in the other: the humidity meant the bedsheets were damp, the shower was at best a well-meaning trickle, and electrical power was somewhat less than 100% continuous.

All the same, we loved it: food was simple but tasty, staff were obliging and very friendly, the view from the rooms was beautiful and simply being close to the pilgrims climbing up to the rock on full moon day made it somehow special.

Take this for what it is, cheap, cheerful and friendly, and you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: Just ask for one with a view - ours were great but reading some reviews there are clearly some that...

We went there Dated 04/04/13 stayed for a day it had good view but the dinner and breakfast was average we were there all in four of us ( only us ) so they wanted us to take the dinner early so that the workers staff can go home to rest . It was not bad . To reach this hotel we have to take the local truck as mentioned by other travelers too pay a little more to drive directly to golden rock temple if you are visiting than you can walk down it would not be tiring ! And if you have aged or sickly person or too small kids it not so safe to walk uphill to the mountain top . Anyway there are people willing to carry you for usd 5 per person if you healthy than you can walk uphill try to come down before sunset otherwise it will be very very dark kindly bring torchlights which you can take from the hotel rooms . We went uphill about 5 pm and were very scared to go down it was dark as such lucky we had our hand phones with lights .It's best to reach the hill top via the truck. The truck is terrible and not so safe if you have small kids and elderly because you have to wait till the truck is have max person of 45 people otherwise you have to wait. Kindly take insurance if you indent to go to golden Rock
