What a lovely setting – nestling in a wooded area and 50 minutes (uphill!) walk to the Golden Rock itself.
Rooms are large with aircon, fan, TV and fridge. Windows mosquito screened. Large clean bathroom. However, electricity supply is sporadic (although they do have a generator), and the aircon is poor. There are so many staff, they are falling over each other. Food poor – for dinner, we had to pre order earlier in the day and when the food arrived it was mostly cold. It was not inexpensive, either. Breakfast was equally poor – choice of eggs fried or omelette, toast and tea/coffee and a banana. Music and prayers from temple on the hill opposite went on until 11pm and started again at 5am.
All in all a great setting, OK rooms but very poor food.

This feedback is for the Mountain Top/View Hotel. We (my wife, my friend and his wife who are from Myanmar) stayed at this hotel for one night. The travel company booked this "Superior" room for each couple. We took a truck ride up to the top. About 45 minutes long. We then had porters carry our suitcases to the hotel.
The view was fantastic. You see the Golden Rock pagoda from a distance about 3/4 mile away. You see a large valley looking down and across the valley towards a mountain range. Sunset was beautiful. It was quite peaceful except for a gangs of dogs fighting and yelping loudly across from the hotel. It's OK if you like dogs. Kind of noisy every now and then.
Now the rooms.. Very tiny. No phone, no TV. Hot and cold water available. Adequate for one or two nights. Being closest to Pagoda made it very pricey. We paid $90.00 per night for each room. It did get cold up there. We were there in January 2013. It could be cold year round because of elevation.
Food. Restaurant serves breakfast and it was OK. Dinner was fine too. Nothing outstanding. Good food especially if you are hungry. Not bad for the experience. It you want to save money, stay at the base. Besides you can see everything in one visit unless you are there to worship and meditate. Hotel and restaurant staff were attentive and helpful.

Room Tip: We did not check other rooms since we were staying only one night. Other hotels on the mountain top could have better rooms.

to be fair, I have to say right off that i was on a tour and did not have any control over the booking. this was the only hotel out of many i stayed in that I did not like. perhaps there are nice rooms at the hotel but my view was of a ugly brick wall in a place where the views are pretty much everything. the room was totally lacking in charm. breakfast everywhere else was amazing....at Golden Rock there was basically just eggs and coffee and tea and some bananas i believe. This breakfast was served with mind boogling ineficiancy so that most of the eggs arrived cold. when i went to the front desk to ask about my key (it had to be turned just right to work) i mentioned how upset i was with the ugly room and was met with a blank stare. As for the terrace...yes its nice though there is only enough room and seating for a very small group and as sun set the mosquitoes arrived and there is no screening.

Room Tip: well...i would ask what the view is unless you do not care. Not sure what the other options are in the area....but there has to be better i would hope

I have just stayed at Golden Rock hotel. After staying in International resorts in Bagan and Lake Inle I appreciated the contrast. The simplicity of this accommodation suits its location. I felt I had travelled back in time whilst sitting on the large veranda enjoying a drink and watching an amazing sunset.
I had room 403 with stunning views, a large, comfortable clean room with teak furniture it certainly felt more authentic to its location. The meals were most enjoyable with excellent vegetarian options.

Room Tip: The 400 rooms are higher so perhaps have a better view. I was in 403

Despite its name this hotel is not at the Golden Rock, but on the track to the rock a 15 minute steep climb from the settlement where the trucks stop ( and another 45 minutes to the top! ). Set in a nice location there are good views over the hilly countryside. After dark it gets very quiet with no options nearby to eat and drink other than in the hotel itself. Not a big problem for me but if you want a more lively evening best stay at the top close to the Golden Rock.
The hotel itself is quite nice. Rooms are pleasant with teak floors and ceilings. These are set out in blocks and have good views across attractive gardens. The young staff try very hard to please. The dining room is quite formal with the waiters wearing bowties. Breakfast was probably the best we had on a wonderful two week tour of parts of Myanmar. Table service by the young men in bowties made a welcome break from the ubiquitous buffet.
Try to get a room away from the track to the Rock. Pilgrims start their climb to the Rock well before dawn and they are very noisy as they make their way in the dark. I don't blame them, they are enjoying themselves....I would do the same!

Room Tip: Avoid rooms near the pathway to the Rock. Pilgrims start the climb in the dark before dawn and they can be noisy.
