I have just stayed at Golden Rock hotel. After staying in International resorts in Bagan and Lake Inle I appreciated the contrast. The simplicity of this accommodation suits its location. I felt I had travelled back in time whilst sitting on the large veranda enjoying a drink and watching an amazing sunset.
I had room 403 with stunning views, a large, comfortable clean room with teak furniture it certainly felt more authentic to its location. The meals were most enjoyable with excellent vegetarian options.

Room tip: The 400 rooms are higher so perhaps have a better view. I was in 403

Despite its name this hotel is not at the Golden Rock, but on the track to the rock a 15 minute steep climb from the settlement where the trucks stop ( and another 45 minutes to the top! ). Set in a nice location there are good views over the hilly countryside. After dark it gets very quiet with no options nearby to eat and drink other than in the hotel itself. Not a big problem for me but if you want a more lively evening best stay at the top close to the Golden Rock.
The hotel itself is quite nice. Rooms are pleasant with teak floors and ceilings. These are set out in blocks and have good views across attractive gardens. The young staff try very hard to please. The dining room is quite formal with the waiters wearing bowties. Breakfast was probably the best we had on a wonderful two week tour of parts of Myanmar. Table service by the young men in bowties made a welcome break from the ubiquitous buffet.
Try to get a room away from the track to the Rock. Pilgrims start their climb to the Rock well before dawn and they are very noisy as they make their way in the dark. I don't blame them, they are enjoying themselves....I would do the same!

Room tip: Avoid rooms near the pathway to the Rock. Pilgrims start the climb in the dark before dawn and they can be noisy.

Well run hotel with nice basic rooms. The view from terrace is great. Tip: Eat breakfast outside to include the view. Located in easy walking distance from the truck drop off even with a bag (you can do with out a porter). Expect about 30-45 minutes to the top. Food were average. All in all fair value for money at a great location.

I stayed here near the end of my 3 week trip traveling around Myanmar. I was pleasantly surprised and found the cabin style accommodation both comfortable and ideal given the hotel's location. The showers were good with hot water and rooms were fine. The single beds were a bit narrow but comfy. After the trek up to the Golden rock and down again, to relax here with a cold drink was ideal. The staff were polite and the restaurant staff (with vest and bow ties!) were friendly and did a great job at dinner.

I stayed at the Golden Rock Hotel with my family over Christmas 2012. This hotel is approximately a 10 minute climb from where the truck drops you off. You are able to hire porters to carry your luggage to the hotel if required.

The trick for a good stay is to understand that you really are roughing it out here. Past a certain time, they don't get electricity and they have to rely on a power generator. That will probably be the case until Myanmar becomes more developed. As it is, most of the locals come here for as a pilgrimage journey of sorts, so the Kyaikto region is relatively undeveloped as a tourist attraction.

Expect basic amenities if that - no internet, no proper safe, cabin style accommodation (do check the photos attached). Your expectations really determine what sort of experience you will get here.

## Positives
- Good service (chilled bottled water after a sweaty climb... woohoo!)
- Comfortable Beds

## Negatives
- Meals from the restaurant needs to be ordered an hour in advance
- Breakfast was pretty oily

## Traveller Tip: It is better to eat at the restaurant here. Most of the other eating places at the top of the mountain pre-cook their food and just warm it up when you order.
