“Luxury at the mountain top”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 3, 2014

After the long and windy bus ride up the mountain, it was a pleasure to check into Mountain Top Hotel. The rooms were clean with a great outlook for sunrise. The dining room too was well laid out with nice views over the mountains. The service in the bar and restaurant was great, and they had a nice wine selection compared to many places in Myanmar. A 5-10 minute walk to the golden rock but a lovely haven from the neon lights outside.

This is the best hotel for a trip to see the Golden Rock on Mt Kyaiktiyo. There aren't many sleeping options up there and on Friday to Sunday little space to curl up on the ground anywhere on the mountain. The hotel rooms are basic but comfortable with a truly unforgettable view of the sunrise from the room (having already merged with the true pilgrims to see the sunset). The whole trip is an amazing experience, whatever you might think of the holiness of a large balanced rock held in place by one of Buddha's hairs. Everyone appears to have a great time.

Room Tip: I think all rooms have a view to the east

Stayed here for one night. 2 minute walk to the Golden Rock complex. Restaurants nearby. Rooms were big and clean. Most amazing view of the mountain tops. Breath taking. Exciting adventure traveling to this hotel on the back of the open truck.

The hotel is only 5 minutes walk from the golden rock and the "bus" station. The rooms are decent sized, clean and have a great view over the mountains and you can see the sunrise. Beds are comfortable and there are extra blanket as it can get chilly in the evenings. There is a lively atmosphere in the hotel as people come and go to see the Golden rock. The staff are friendly and helpful. There is a safety deposit at the reception. Restaurant with view over the mountains where breakfast is also served. We only stayed one night, which is enough to get a sense of golden rock and its atmosphere. It defenitely is worth staying at the top of the mountain instead of Kin Pun base
camp as you get to see the rock and the pilgrims at different hours of the day. Its also worth getting up early in the morning to see the sun rise. Best to come here only with a small backbag and leave your trolley somewhere else, as space is tight in the pick-up trucks

The location is unbeatable - it is one of 2 hotels for foreigners/tourists near the fabulous Kyaiktiyo Pagoda.
The hotel has fantastic views of the mountains, as well as the rock itself which can be seen from the dining room. Staying at the top of the mountain allows travellers access at different times of the day. I experienced the rock during light rain and fog, then sunshine, and then lit up in the evening which provides an interesting mix of the absolute devotion of Buddhists in an almost theme-park environment. It is worth getting up early for the sunrise views as well.
The hotel room was pleasant, with surprisingly comfortable beds. You don't need air-con because the mountain air is crisp and cool in the evening. Breakfast was fine, but could have been a little hotter. Most large hotels have a buffet, with a staff member to cook eggs to order, which would have been nicer.
The hotel staff were friendly and helpful in a very genuine way, indicating a happy workplace environment. The manager told me he has a policy of hiring inexperienced staff, then giving them the necessary training in English and hospitality skills.

Room Tip: I imagine all the rooms are fine. I thought that being directly under the dining room would be noisy...

I would not look for any other place. The location is perfect, just a few minutes from everything. Rooms are nice, look and feel new with a colonial touch. The view is magnificent. I found the staff to be very polite. Food in the restaurant is decent, but I'd like it to be served hotter as one could use some warm comfort in the chilly evening.
