this little hotel is a great one to be when you arrive at golden rock, spending a night there is great as the sun set and sun rise are pure beauty, excellent pictures to be done. this hotel is clean, rooms are nice, some insects around, don't be afraid, diner was ok, not too much choice for breakfast, but still the best hotel we could find there.

Room Tip: if you have a room on the upper right, you will have a wonderful scenic view, but you may have the n...

Stayed one night in March 2013 when I visited Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock). I arrived around 3pm and dropped by bags off in the room before heading out to golden rock. I had room #309 which was in the lower part and involved climbing down and up the most stairs. I would recommend asking for a room closer to the lobby if you have problems with stairs.
Hotel room had two beds (it a a deluxe room based on their description since it had a TV) and there was a beautiful view out of the windows! There was a tv, mini bar (drinks available for purchase in the fridge) and their was a fan as well. I slept with the windows open so no need for the fan but useful just in case. The bed was a bit hard but after a tiring day, I feel asleep quickly! I had brought my own shampoo and conditioner since I am particular and since it is not an international brand, I wasn't surprised to see packets of the shampoo. There was also flip flops provided and a flashlight which came in handy when I went to dinner at night and didn't want to fall down the stairs upon my return.

Lobby is nice and they have a bunch of magazines for you to read (albeit old magazines but at least reading material) and there is a TV playing a program about Myanmar. They also have souvenirs (books about Myanmar) to purchase. There is also a bar and then down the two steps you will see the restaurant and a closed in room with many windows that sat a large group for dinner while I was there.

I ate dinner at the hotel and was pleased with the prices. I paid $4 USD for fried noodles with vegetables which were filling. Green tea was complementary although on the menu it says tea is $1.50 which I believe is for the Lipton Tea. Breakfast was included in my stay so I had eggs and toast after viewing the Golden Rock at sunrise. I would recommend eating breakfast in a seat looking at Golden Rock as it is truly beautiful! Also, the views of the beautiful scenery are spectacular as well!

Notes: Check out was at 9am so plan accordingly if you are a late riser.
They required a $5 deposit for the hotel key so have this prepared.

This hotel is the best option so you can view the beautiful Golden Pagoda at both sunset and sunrise. I will definitely return if I have the chance!

Hardly an international hotel, it is after all located at the top of a mountain away from normal amenities in a country just emerging from years of embargos.
Our room (" deluxe?") was actually much better than expected, clean large and well equipped - no complaints at all - and only a few steps from reception and the hustle and bustle of pilgrimage Myanmar. The location allowed us to visit the rock at dusk and dawn and is therefore the only place to stay. Staff were of course helpful and friendly and the food edible and adequate considering the location. For us it was a must do - despite cost and effort - an overbiding memory of a wonderful country. However, if you are not open to other cultures and prepared to open up your inner soul it may not be the place for you - but goodness I hope it is!

In the category of a remote, tourist destination, overnight-er hotels we rate this hotel very highly.

Room 202 was spotlessly clean and had surreal views over the distant mountains.
Waking up at dawn (to visit the Rock) to see the sunrise from the panoramic bed room window was a once in a life time experience.

The bed did not seem to be innerspring but it was comfortable.
The ambient temperature of the room + windows open with the ceiling fan operating was a pleasant change from AC. No mosquitoes either!
The quality of the shower head and the supply of hot water needs a little more attention.

Staff were knowledgeable and friendly.
Sitting in the cafe in front of the hotel enjoying a few beers and snacks (after a very long day of travelling and walking) watching "humanity" going to and from the Rock was an education in its self
The breakfast choice was limited but freshly cooked and promptly served.
Generally, the food was of a good quality for a hotel of this genre in Myanmar.

The whole Golden Rock experience from a cultural, religious and tourism experience is a "must do" in our opinion.

It's a 4 hour drive from Yangon to the base camp of Golden Rock. From there you take a 1 hour ride in a big open-topped truck all the way to the top of the mountain. Mountain Top Hotel is the first hotel at the top. Note that you will need to pack a small overnight bag for your overnight stay in Golden Rock while the rest of your luggage gets left in the car at base camp so you will want to bring the minimum amount of stuff, especially if you plan on hiking the half hour from the hotel to the first bus terminal. Before 2012, pickup trucks only stopped at the bus terminal and foreigners had to walk the 45 minute trek up the rest of the way but there is now a newly built road for the trucks to drive on.

Do know that the pickup truck is a very tight fit. They fit 6 people in 7 benches of seats and you are squeezed in like sardines in the heat. Wear a good hat and sunscreen - there's no room for sun umbrellas and your overnight bag will be squished in under your feet while you sweat it out. You will make a stop half way up the mountain and wait under a shaded awning (still in your seat) while trucks coming downhill pass. I think we were here 10 minutes. There is no leg room for Foreigners who are not Burmese-sized so be ready to be cramped.

At the hotel, wifi is paid: $3/30 mins. We had a Deluxe room, different from a Standard because it has a TV, phone and minibar. No air con here, only a ceiling fan but it's not terribly hot at night. Rooms were basic but clean, with good water pressure and hot water. Beware that there are periodic power outages so lights may go out for like 30 seconds while you're in the shower but the generators kick in. We had a nice mountain view with no trees on front of our room. There are some serious steps down to your room.

We had dinner at our hotel since there really aren't any other options around. The menu is Myanmar and Chinese food. Set menus range from $12-17 though 2 people can share the $17 menu - more than enough for 2 people and the most economical option. You can pay in dollars or kyat, and they will give change in $ if paying in $. Note there is a 15% tax on alcohol if you have wine at dinner.

The Rock is a short 5 min walk from the hotel. Take your shoes off and carry them when you get closer. The Rock is, well, a golden rock...

For breakfast, instead of just having eggs, ask for the Myanmar breakfast instead, which is 1 fried egg on top of fried rice served with a crunchy deep-friend onions and garlic to go on top of your rice for some texture. You can top this off with some local "baychin" - fresh chilis in fish sauce and soy sauce.

You have to ignore the price when judging this hotel. It's literally on a mountain top, so bound to be dearer than otherwise. We found our room simple, but clean and comfortable, with a lovely view. The staff were welcoming and very helpful and it was one of the few places where we were able to get Red Mountain wine from Myanmar.
The only, very small criticism is that it wasn't made clear to us on check-in that we needed to book our meal in advance if we wanted to eat in the restaurant. Fortunately, we picked up on this from another guest and our choice of food was quickly served at the appointed time. Food was Ok, nothing special, but that's often the case in Myanmar.
The hotel is a few minutes from the Golden Rock complex, and we were fascinated by our visit. It is a very sacred spot and attracts pilgrims from all over Myanmar. This gave it a very special atmosphere at sunset, with whole families setting up temporary overnight camps around the plaza. The whole experience was a glorious mix of religious site and carnival atmosphere. Quite unique. Made the uncomfortable truck ride and the long hot slog up the mountain worthwhile. I doubt a daytime visit would be the same at all.

This hotel is a basic accommodation. It was clean, and our view from the room was great (green mountains). The staff was incredibly kind and helpful. Your bathroom supplies consisted of two packets of shampoo and one tiny pack of soap. Which, is really all you need. Breakfast was very basic ( an egg, and a piece of toast). We didn't eat dinner there, we tried a local restaurant a few doors down which was fine. If possible, leave your luggage in Yangon, or in the car ( if continuing on). Put what you need in a back pack/overnight bag. The loud speaker ( announcements to the crowd waiting to enter the Golden Rock) woke us up at about 5:45 AM. Which would have been a great wake up call if the Golden Rock weren't being refurbished ( which it was when we got there). Do bring a light sweater, it was chilly at night.
