Amazing Ngapali Resort
Ranked #6 of 22 Hotels in Ngapali
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 30, 2012

Very nice resort, with one major reservation.

Everything good that has been written previously about this hotel: the beach, service, rooms, friendly locals – is true. More on this in a minute.

First, however, some of my reservations, as I believe these often help people decide on whether to stay in a particular hotel/resort.
The hotel is rather isolated. And by that I don’t just mean that Burma as a whole is definitely a less popular amongst Asian destinations, or that Ngapali is, in essence, a sleepy fishing village with a few resorts for foreigners. This is what’s special about this destination as a whole, and if you don’t like it then Phuket, Railay, Ko Phi Phi etc, might be better choices.
You have to be aware, however, of Amazing’s location within the Ngapali village itself. There are two beaches, each about (I’m guessing) 2kms long, separated by some fields inland, and large rocky outcrops on the beach itself. You can’t just walk from one beach to the other (because of the rock barrier, I’m told, as well as the fact that some government resort is located there. We once walked for about 20 mins, got to the end of “our” part of the beach, and turned back). There are only a few hotels on the northern beach, among them Amazing. Most of the resorts are on the southern beach. An obvious advantage of that is that the northern beach is rather empty and quiet, which we very much enjoyed. However, most of the restaurants, souvenir shops, etc, are located across the street from the cluster of resorts in the south (there are very few beach-front restaurants which wouldn’t be a part of a hotel or resort. Certainly all the recommended restaurants, many of which we tried, are inland – on the other side of the street, across from the resorts). There are 2 or 3 restaurants close to Amazing, we tried one of them and it was so-so. The hotel staff were recommending either their own restaurant (which you can get bored of I guess if you’re staying several days), or restaurants in that southern part of the village. It takes about 20mins cycling from Amazing to the nearest one of those, pleasant ride, although not in mid-day heat (if you decide to have lunch there) or after you’ve had a few beers with dinner. There are some particularly nice restaurants further south, across from Amata resort, but that would be 40 or more minutes to cycle to get there, each way. Public transport is difficult. I’m assuming you’re willing to rough it out a bit with the locals and sit in the back of a pick-up/tuk-tuk that they use for buses. This will cost you between 500 and 1500 kyat each way (only $0.7 to $2), assuming however that transport is available. Which very often isn’t the case after 8 or 9pm, when you might find yourself returning from dinner to the hotel. Private taxi will be 5000 to 8000 kyat ($7 to $10) each way, depending on whether you book from the hotel, or try to organize one yourself. Considering that dinner for 2 with a couple of drinks will cost you about 15,000-20,000 in those not-beach-front restaurants, and around twice as much in hotel restaurants, private taxi might seem quite expensive, although it isn’t really when compared to Europe etc – decide for yourself. Anyway, this is probably the only thing that I can complain about with regards to this resort. We don’t like eating in hotel restaurant too much, and found the difficulty in commuting to where the “action” is a bit disappointing.

Everything else was great. Beach – long, wide, palm-fringed, not too crowded. Sand is nice although not of the very white, super-fine variety. I would say 7/10 on my personal beach ranking scale, 8, 9 being the nicer parts of Mexican Riviera Maya, Railay in Thailand, Varadero in Cuba. Certainly a very nice beach though. Lots of fun floating around in huge inflatable inner tyres, available free of charge from the hotel. Food – nice in the hotel, very nice and very reasonably priced in those restaurants that I mentioned. Excellence (closer to the hotel) and Treasure (farther from the hotel, across from Amata resort) are 2 that stand out. Very nice breakfast buffet in the hotel, available until 10 (big plus for me!), large choice of fresh fruit, American, French, Asian breakfast options. Lovely beach-side tables. Staff – very, very helpful, we got a choice of several rooms, and the possibility of staying on upper floor even though it wasn’t immediately available. BTW I would certainly choose an upper floor room if going for the sea-view villa. Remember sea-view is second row of villas, beach-front is what they call first row. But upper floor in sea view is certainly very, very nice, and the view isn’t obstructed at all (second row villas are situated, sort of, in gaps between the first row villas). Resort grounds are lovely, landscaped with tropical plants and beautifully maintained. Free bike rental, pool table, darts, as well as wi-fi access, although slow (typical for Burma). VERY expensive phone calls - $7 per minute to the UK! Rooms are very tastefully decorated, look up the photos to decide for yourself. Certainly very good value for money considering room quality and beach quality. Free pick-up and drop-off from the relaxed and small Ngapali airport.

Great resort, very good value for money, if you don’t mind eating in hotel restaurant all the time it’ll be great, 4.5 out of 5, otherwise 3 or 3.5 out of 5.

Room Tip: First row of villas is called beach-front. Second row is called sea-view. Request upper floor when g...

The name is appropriate, it is Amazing !
Beautiful room, view, ambiance, beach, restaurant, wonderful staff , it really is wonderful and I want to return.
Spa is great, reasonable massages and very good.
Not much of a town but that is part of the charm and a walk down the street outside is very interesting with some restos and simple hotels.
Quite a large resort and not all rooms have oceanfront sea view but you can request.

We stayed at this lovely resort last November. I then wanted to rate it 6 stars but not possible under TA rules.
We have just stayed for a further week this April.
The staff and service are still outstanding, the location is stunning with the best beach in Ngapali.
Our room was an Amazing Suite Villa, which I can honestly say was not cheap at well over $400 a night but it was lovely, just as it was on our last visit.
The food in the hotel was good but not exceptional. It was very reasonably priced and represented excellent value for money. A meal of 5 tiger prawns cost about $12.00 US even better value now that the Myanmar currency has been floated on the world market.
Ngapali has started to expand. Since our last visit, 5 months ago there has been development along the main road opposite the resort. There are now about 5 new bars and restaurants. This is good news if you like to eat out (although we did not) but the downside is that some of these establishments play very loud music during all times of the day and night. This can be a nuisance to guests at the hotel.
We have also noticed that there is a lot more traffic noise now, this is not surprising with the new development in the area, including a massive new hotel under construction almost next to the airport.
It is still a lovely hotel with the most 'amazing' service ethos. Nothing is too much trouble. It is also a lovely touch when the entire reception and restaurant staff plus the resident manager all turn out to wave you farewell when it is time to go...... unforgettable !
We will return.

I went to Amazing Ngapali Resort and Amata Resort, so I can compare directly. Amazing Resort outperforms Amata in EVERY category and I can just recommend everybody to spend some days there. Amazing Resort is on the north side of Ngapali Beach, and until 2013 (new hotels will open) will be the ONLY hotel at that part of the beach. You will have a dream beach almost for you alone, the quietness and peace is literally amazing. You will reside either on the ground or first floor of a bungalow, having a separate bathroom with a marble, round bathtub and a balcony (or terrace if you're downstairs).
The architecture of the hotel is perfect, with an open restaurant in front of the small but very nice swimming pool, directly facing the beach. The staff is just lovely, they’re all naturally friendly and will try their best English with you. No crowds, just pure relaxation. Beach beds are available and very comfortable. It's a huge beach, and you won't run into each other.
The only (but really only!!) weak point is that there is not that big choice of seafood restaurants on the street behind the hotel as on the south side of the beach where all the hotels are (you'd really have to walk quite a long way), but I have to say that the food of the resort restaurant is – other than in for example in Amata – absolutely delicious and at the same time affordable, you pay one or two dollars more than behind the hotel but you really get something special.
Summary - In Ngapali, the South Beach is good, the North Beach is outstanding. If i went there again, I'd stay at least 4 nights at Amazing Resort (I only had 2 nights, then arrived a bunch of business people and the hotel was booked out), I advice you to go there soon - in 10 years the beach will be equally crowded as the beaches in Ko Samui or Phuket. Myanmar is opening - so take advantage!!!!

My husband LOVED the beach. Thought it was one of the best beaches he has seen. Beach is very accessible from the main hotel and our room (all hotel rooms). Cost was very affordable.

Booking: Not sure how others booked their reservation - we booked ours through the hotel directly. We were fatigued just by the number of emails and lack of direct answers we received in our communications with the hotel. Once we finally squared away our Yangon connecting flights we arranged to meet the hotel representative at our Yangon hotel one morning to make payment in US$ and to receive our air tickets. This went as planned until the afternoon of our payment when we received a message that we needed to call the hotel representative. Once we made the phone call she would not tell us anything until we met her in person - that evening. Back at our hotel (we thought we might be late meeting friends for dinner) she told us that she made a mistake and that she undercharged us US$18. Really? Understand that she was embarrassed - but we found the booking process unnecessarily painful.

Arrival: A hotel representative met us at the Ngapali airport - which is a nice touch. Most staff do not speak English well and it is difficult at times to communicate. Once at the hotel we were asked for our passports and our return air tickets - yes, the same tickets that we acquired from the hotel! They wanted to make photocopies. After 20 minutes she returned and told us the copier was broken and that she would need to hold both our passports and air tickets. We were not comfortable with this. Luckily we travel with multiple copies of our passports - so we were able to provide a copy. We then negotiated the airline ticket information - she wrote down what she needed. BTW: this is not uncommon that Amazing takes your airline ticket. When we were departing a family of four realized once at the airport that Amazing still had their tickets! Luckily for them the flight was delayed.

Activities: Although information is written in English - ask questions. We did the morning snorkeling excursion, by boat. The tour info mentioned beaches. We assumed that the boat would land on the shore - nope. Snorkeling is in the middle of the ocean. Be careful of boat captain spearing fish as you snorkel. Although the information did not mention this - the boat does stop at a island food and beer canteen. We did not have cash on us. Order what you like. When you return to the hotel the boat captain will wait for you as you run to your room to find the cash to pay for your treats.

Food was fine. Stick with fish. We overheard a woman say that she hadn't felt the same since having a hamburger the previous day.

BTW, a Military Police person resided in the room below ours.
