“Beautiful”
Reviewed November 26, 2013

This resort is approximately 15 years old, but very well kept. Located at a stunningly beautiful bay, Ngapali Beach. Quiet, not many resorts or hotels, large sand beach, very nice people and with stunningly beautiful sunsets. We had booked the best villa. With sea view and thought that would be right on the beach. Turned out to be a mistake, the beautiful villa, 120 square meters, was located on the second row, but with a (narrow) view on the sea between two first row villas. Fortunately we could change to a beach front villa for the last three nights against an USD 50 supplement per night. The restaurant is a beautifully located terrace a meter above the beach (like the villas) with a predominantly Western, Italian menu. Good food, but rather expensive for Myanmar. On the beach, 15 minutes walk to the right and left are fantastic local restaurants with great crab, prawns, lobster and other fish. Very very fresh, probably fresh from the same day, against a third of the price of the resort. Outside the resort, close to the entrance are another four restaurants with great food for the same very reasonable prices. The local wine (Mountainwhite), both white and red, is quite good (USD 15 per bottle in the local restaurants). With a bottle of wine and fantastically prepared king prawns sets you back for not more than USD 23-24 for dinner for two. Plus a fruit dessert free of charge.
The breakfast in Sandoway Resort is really good. This time an old fashioned breakfast ordered as per the menu. Great fruit, well prepared eggs and/or a Myanmar rice breakfast.
Very good staff.
Again the cottages and villas, 59 in total, are located in a beautifully kept tropical garden.
The swimming pool is overflow and quite large and beautiful.
A great stay.

Room Tip: The best deal is probably to book a Cottage (80 square meter) Beach front. At the same price as a Vi...

We have stayed 4 nights at the Sandoway early November at the end of our honey moon trip
in Myanmar. The beach position was perfect. The room was lovely and extremely spacious. The
swimming pool was fabulous. But compared to other 5* hotels we have stayed in Myanmar, it was lacking in area of service:
- Chaotic arrival at the airport and very long check-in at the hotel
- Deficient or nonexistent drink service at the beach
- At the Spa, beauticians lack professionalism
- Internet service not available during all our stay
- Very poor english level of the entire staff
- General Manager unfriendly attitude. He doesn’t greed and welcome clients although he’s
always eating at the restaurant with Italian staff. We've travelled around Myanmar (Yangon,
Bagan, Inlay Lake, Mandalay), and have always been met with warmth and smiles from staff
except at Sandoway.
- Profit, Profit, Profit on the back of clients: a 5% margin because we paid in local currency and
a 100% margin on stamps. No comment … !
- Outrageous prices at the restaurant compared to what we paid in top hotels and a +15%
price increase during our stay (moving the price of dessert from 9$ to 10$ for instance)
- Tipping : at the airport, when leaving the hotel, we were strongly asked to pay 1$ for luggage
to porters. This was the very first time for us in Myanmar to be pulled aside for tips. It was
all the more shocking that the transfer is included in the price of Sandoway’s room. When
arriving, no tips were asked.
This was our experience at the Sandoway. A lovely place but a very poor service. Maybe we
will go somewhere else next time.

Sandoway hotel is located on one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. We were fortunate to have a beachfront villa so the view was breathtaking and the water was perfect. The service was excellent and the staff was very friendly. Across the road from the hotel was an excellent seafood and fish restaurant called ENJOY. Everything was very fresh, delicious and inexpensive.

Room Tip: Villa # 7

Stayed three nights great location right on beach,we had a breach front villa so great views. Villas are good, large and clean. Breakfast is a little disappointing it's not buffet but waiter service. The food in the hotel is expensive but there are so many good restaurants in walking distance of the hotel you don't need to stay in the hotel. Also don't use the hotel laundry service unless you have lots of cash the hotel will tell you there isn't a laundry service outside , but if you come out of the hotel turn right a 100 yards on the left is a shop that takes it at a fraction of the price.
Hotel also had bikes to hire worth doing.
Try the restaurant along the beach and on the island I think it's called the pleasant view inlet excellent food and half price of the hotel also great nightime location.

Room Tip: But get a beachside villa if possible

We spent three days at Sandoway in October. The beachfront villas are spectacular; the beach itself, a working beach, is glorious; service and food are good. There is no doubt that Ngapali will become increasingly popular as Thandwe airport is upgraded so, if you're considering Myanmar, don't delay. I recommend the restaurants along the road behind Sandoway which offer better value and the beach restaurant at Pleasant View Islet along the beach is well worth a visit.

We stay one week during the "shoulder season" or end of rainy season (Oct 17-23). We had one rainy afternoon, one cloudy day and one nighttime thunderstorm. It was beautiful all the other days. High season starts in November, so you can save some money and enjoy sparsely populated beach and restaurants by booking in low season. Resort is open 7 months (Oct-April).
Pros:
-Wonderful staff employed from local villages-some have been there all 14 years that this resort has been open.
-Beautiful architecture and luxe villas.
-Great location-largely not a commercialized location but changing as new resorts are being built all the way up to the airport several miles to the north. Beach vacation-but more available. Step away from the resort and mingle with welcoming locals. Rent a bike share the road with dogs, roosters, monks, ox driven carts, motorbikes and women patching the road by hand. It's surreal.
-Cheap bike rental at Sandoway for $4 day or $2 a half day.
-Good attention to details. You will have a beach bag and sandals in your room along with beach towels.
Cons:
-After 14 years, the resort is starting to show a little fatigue.
-Wifi not very robust. Wifi signal is strong so this is not Sandoway's fault. Best place to get a signal is lobby by restaurant.
-Not a place to snorkel-too dark and no shelf even with boat t trip away fromhe beach. Boat trips/fishing trips can easily be arranged by fisherman that offer on the beach and it's
cheaper than Sandoway arranging it for you.
-Pricey for food and drinks at the resort versus local establishments-BUT, quality of some things (fresh fruit) higher at the resort.
-You will be asked to tip bag handlers at Thandwe airport when you leave but it's only 50cents (500 kyat). Tip more if you want or carry your own bag for free.
-We felt secure in this area of the country in spite of recent unrest. We did notice police presence at the airport and on the way to the resort.

Room Tip: Villas have a more private and spread out beach chair location. Some of the cottage beach chairs si...

I live in Yangon with my 3 year daughter since July. I spent four days at Sandoway Resort with my daughter during her school vacation. Among many other wonderful hotels in Ngapali beach, Sandoway Resort was recommended by a friend who has two girls around my daughter's age.
My experience with Sandoway Resort was beyond our expectation.

When we arrived in the airport, we were picked up by a little cute bus arranged by the hotel, my daughter enjoyed the scenery from the bus as it was open window bus.

We stayed in beach cottage where we can have a view from the two story spacious cottage.
The hotel tried to make the resort very peaceful so there was TV in the room and the dining area was also very quiet to the point, I felt a bit ashamed of having a child in the resort. The most of guests were senior people coming from Europe.
However, everyone in the hotel was very friendly and helpful so that I could get some help with my daughter.

I tried massage too and it was excellent, the best ever I had in Myanmar for the last 5 months though the price was a bit high.
Also the restaurant provided high-quality Italian restaurant, again the best I ever had in Myanmar, better than the one in Yangon, for sure.
Fish was very fresh and simply booked with Italian touch.

The swimming pool was well-maintained and the beach was just amazing. I would recommend this hotel to everyone who is coming to Ngapali Beach.

The only downsize of this hotel is that there is only one restaurant. So, I got a bit bored with food after four days even it was excellent. As I was alone with my daughter, I was feeling a bit lazy to go out to find another option but am pretty sure that there are many other restaurants near by the resort.
