“Great location, lovely staff and management!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2014

If you are looking for a nice, small resort in Ngapali, this lovely "no shoes" hotel is where you should stay. It is managed by a very friendly young team who will do their best to make you feel home. Ask Jochen, the manager, for tips about Ngapali and the surrounding villages and he will take the time to assist you. We have also enjoyed the all day long breakfast! No need to set up an alarm, Cilly will organize it for you anytime!

Let's start with the good points.
1. The location is fantastic.
2. The local people are lovely.
3. Ngapali is a very beautiful fascinating place.
Sorry to say that's all I could find.

Now for the bad points
1. Room damp that the paint was peeling off the walls
2. The room furnishings ie bed table and chair were very tired. Nothing on the walls.
3. There was no hot water for 4 of the 9 days
4. The a lack of light at night due to half the lights not working. Had to read with a head torch.
5. Nails sticking out of the rotten floor boards on the balcony. The path to my room had eroded. There was a large hole and extremely dangerous walking to my room at night in the dark.
6. Lack of Sun beds and most were broken they had a few rotten sweaty old mattresses ( which can cause a skin fungus if not clean)
7. No clothes dryer in my room but there were some in other rooms
8. The bed was made on a daily basis, but I never got clean bed linen or towels for the 9 days.
9. Someones dirty old knickers on the chair.
10. The large 5 gallon drinking water container had not been changed and the small amount of water was stagnant.
11. Many people where ill with stomach problems or food poisoning. Having worked in catering I decided to check the kitchen, my concerns were confirmed. It was a bacteria breeding ground. The owner calls himself a chef, he needs to seriously rethink his job description. He should be ashamed of himself. There is no excuse for such a filthy out door kitchen.
12. The garden area looked like a builders yard stroke recycling dump which at night caused a few problems if you didn't have a torch.

It was pretty obvious too me that the owner had lost interest and was more interested in believing in his own self publicity and hype. You can see he has no intention in investing any money in the place. You can see by the pictures he uses to advertise that they were taken about 10 years ago when they first built laguna lodge, at first I was beginning to think they where taken in another hotel?
I felt sorry for the manager ( who tried his best) who you could see had lost the will to live, his hands were tied due too the lack of financial injection and support from his boss who wasn't even there.
Don't pay up front!!
I paid into a German bank account before I left the UK as I was told they would be fully booked. I watched a lot of people arrive and when they saw the place they moved to another place down the beach.
If you are taken in by the hype of this place and find you don't like it you won't have waisted your money.
It is a real shame as this could be a wonderful place as some of the other reviews state it just needs some money spending on it and a lot of TLC.

I spent one week with my girlfriend at Laguna Lodge, we had a room at the beachfront, walk out of the door and you are right at the 4kilometer long Ngapali beach, which I consider one of the nicest in Southeast asia.
But be careful: if you are looking for a 4 or 5 star resort with aircon, pool and perfect service, stay away from there! If you are looking for a back-to-nature place with simple but clean rooms (all with attached bathrooms), hammocks in the garden, lots of nice fellow travellers to share stories with in the coconut garden, then Laguna Lodge is for you!
The staff is sometimes a little slow but always friendly and very helpful, small problems in the room (one time no hot water, another time one socket was broken) were solved within a few hours ... The staff at the front office who speak very good english and even german were very helpful to help us organizing daytrips, mountainbiketours as well as our bus tickets and hotel bookings for our onward-journey! Even of there are plenty of restaurants outside on the street, we had lunch and dinner almost every day at the Lodge, as the location and setting is unbeatable, the manager Jochen is going to the fishmarket every morning himself (ask to join him!) to get fresh seafood and fish, and don't miss out to try "Cilli's seafood pasta", best with a glass of fresh draft beer!
I am looking very much forward to come back to Ngapali and of course Laguna Lodge very soon, thanks to the lovely Laguna staff for making our stay the highlight of our Myanmar trip!

The location is amazing and the beach as well.
But the rooms are deteriorating and I am not sure the management is doing anything to change it. We simply could not close the door and had to fix it with a stick to lock our door at night. It also requires painting. Investing in mattress for the deckchair on the beach would also give better impression. The place is not cheap for the value (75usd)
Watch out also on the term "Palm garden room with beach and sea view" - where we stayed. It is a bit overstated as you do not have a sea view from your room. You can see it from your terrasse on the side.
We had booked a taxi through the hotel to pick up at the airport when arriving. But the taxi never came.

The breakfast was good, especially the coffee (unfortunately it was often cold). Jorgen and the staff were pleasant and helpful.

Overall we think there are better value for money places on the beach.

We paid up front for 3 nights but had to leave after 1 due to terrible service, burned food, blocked toilets, curtain-less rooms, a scammer driver and very unwelcoming staff. Management at first listened to our complaints and apologised and promised a refund, then refused to follow through and dismissed us. We felt cheated and scammed.

Beautiful beach, fully recommend the location but would advise to stay somewhere else.

Fantastic journey at Laguna Lodge (5 nights)
Excellent location, the front beach is quiet and beautiful
Good harmony with nature (coconut trees, sand until your bangalow door, hammak...)
The room are simple yet very cosy and charming
The staff is friendly and always available ( to share couples of beers)
Good vibes !!!

After a mix-up of rooms on arrival, the problem was quickly sorted out by Joachen on his return - thank you! We received the beautiful room 2 with lovely views to the sea. the room was very spacious and the bed comfortable. the only thing the room needs is a little freshen up "a woman's touch!". breakfast was good, with fresh coffee, fruit, toast and (unfortunately) cold pancakes. the beach in front is beautiful, blue water and clean. take time to buy some fresh fruit from the local ladies walking up & down the beach (and if you can, take some sunblock lipsticks to give them as a present!). go and eat at the local restaurants out on the road behind the resort - fantastic food, great prices. such a shame we had only planned 3 nights here!!!
