When I arrived at laguna lodge I was a bit disappointed, since I thought there could be more to this place. Some decorative extras, some more "love in detail" to the rooms, the restaurant and the bar.

Yet I loved the quietness of the place and the fact, that this seemed one of the only places along the beach which is a) affordable b) without large tourist groups c) a real travelers place... and in fact, I met the most interesting travelers at this place.

Unfortunately the German owner, Oliver, only came back on my last day. He is a great chef and spoils the guests with his cooking. I got the most delicious chocolate pancake ever just before I left as a goodbye trial of his cooking! Thanks Oliver so much!! I will come back for the Sashimi for sure...

After spending a night out together with him and his Austrian manager, Jochen,
I realized there might be all this decorative extras missing in the lodge, but he has been supporting the people of myanmar ever since he came to Myanmar 17 years ago. He is focussing on that, which made the place even more precious to me.

If you do not want to spend 180 USD a night and are happy to live in a basic place (but with great food and for sure a hot shower and a clean room) I can highly recommend this place. Jochen, his Austrian manager, took us also to the fish market and the local villages which is quite a contrast to the beach life. Thanks!

Also the massage ladies at the beach are great! I can recommend the Rakhine Massage 90 min!!

Room Tip: ask for a room at the beach front :-)

We hadn't booked in advance when we arrived at Ngapali so we decided to check out the hotel/hostels first. Laguna Lodge was the third hotel we checked and after having seen the rooms and the setting, we fell in love with Laguna Lodge immediately: a room with a huge windows, a balcony three meters away from the beach and the sea (these sunsets....) , the restaurant with its setting under the palm trees with the feet in the sand - we felt like being in paradise or like being in a kitsch movie. The rooms are simple, but charming (and clean). We slept with the sound of the waves, got a great breakfast with real coffee and good bread, the seafood pasta was aweseome, not to speak from the tuna sashimi. You won't find luxury there, but well - what do you need more than sun, sea, palm treas, good food and an interesting chat? And not to forget the people there: always helpful, always up for a little chat - we rather felt like being part of the "family" than being guests who pay. Also the others guest were really interesting - you don't find the kind of traveler there who wants the "exoticness" of Myanmar with European standars. Instead you meet people from who are open for life and who don't care about a pool, a butler and an air con-room with hot showers around the clock. And believe me: you won't need it there.

We stayed 10 days at the Laguna Lodge and we are really happy and thankful that we have chosen this place. We booked our room a few months before our trip online and had good email contact with the owner. He answered every question and helped us organizing domestic flights and airport travels. Everything worked great for us and we were picked up at the aiport in Thandwe.
What we really liked about Laguna Lodge is the Eco style- living in between the palm trees, eating with our feet in the sand and the feeling to be close to nature.
We were staying in a beach front room which was so nice because we could see and hear the ocean all the time!
The staff was always friendly and helpful. We had great dinner every night at Lillis Bar (fresh fish, seafood pasta etc) for great prices! The breakfast is nice (coffee, tea, bread, eggs, pancakes, fresh fruit) and even during the day you can order whatever you wish and the staff will prepare it for you! The massage team in front of the Lodge at the beach is doing great work (best you can get at the whole beach).
Its a great quiet place to relax and enjoy where you meet nice people! Its really familiar there because its not so big as the big resorts near Laguna Lodge!
If you are looking for a big 5 *-Resort with Pool and Air-Conditioning etc Laguna Lodge is not for you but if you enjoy being close to nature, country and local people Laguna Lodge is the place to be!
We didn't miss the swimming pool or AC for only one second (it wasnt necessary because the rooms are built that they have a natural air stream) and loved our time at the Laguna Lodge!!
We hope to be back one day!!

We thought we had booked to stay here for 3 nights. The booking was confirmed by a girl we spoke to on the telephone for a beach front room and an airport pick up taxi. We had also sent emails.

When we arrived at the airport there was no taxi to meet us. We took our own taxi. On arrival nobody was expecting us when we said we had reserved a beach front room. However we were told that they could make a room available. When we were shown this it had the clothes of another person in it including their underwear on the bed. We were told to wait 20 mins whilst they cleared it! We were not made to feel welcome.

Following this we moved into the room but could not get the key as it was with the person whose belongings they had removed!

Shortly after the German manager/owner arrived and relayed via another German staff member that there was no record of our emails or booking implying that we were lying about our understanding that we had a reservation. Also we were told that to book a room you have to pay up front so we could not possibly have a confirmed reservation. However none of this information had been relayed to us during our telephone reservation or the email I had sent to another German letting him know that I thought I had a confirmed reservation via telephone.

We were told we would have to move to another room the next day and were accused of saying we had reserved an upper floor beach front room to try and not move which was not the case as we just did not want to have to change rooms.

We now felt even more uncomfortable and so decided to leave. The German manager was clearly too busy to come and speak to us directly.

The Lodge itself appears to be a building site at present as a new block is being constructed. There were empty plastic water bottles lying around and dead vegetation. I asked for a cold bottle of water but was told there wasn't any. This is not the rustic charm you are led to believe from Lonely Planet. There appeared to be no obvious restaurant area and when I asked if food was available in the evenings I was told it needed to be ordered a day in advance!! Hard to believe this is a hotel run by a German chef according to lonely planet!!!

We left once they had found our mislaid passports which they had only taken 30 mins before and on the way out I told the manager I would be writing a review on tripadvisor. He replied " yes, you are the sort of people who would do that". At the time the Lodge appeared to be hosting a charity medical mission for the local people so we then, as a result of our "attitude", were also accused of not caring about the patients that were to be treated. There was no apology or what would would expect in terms of polite service. Also bear in mind that we would have got to pay 70 US Dollars for this when got the same cost down the beach at the Royal Guest Motel you get a lovely local house feel with friendly staff, a proper restaurant, cold drinks, and you are made to feel welcome.

We did receive an apology email after we had left when they had subsequently found our original booking attempt emails. but this mainly reiterated the same excuses about how we had not booked properly. Retrospectively this is because there is so much miscommunication between different people in this company and the German Managers standard of English is weak.

No wonder Laguna Lodge wants your money up front because you would never pay if you saw it first! And clearly at this place the owner is always right not the customer!!

We recommend that you DO NOT stay here and waste your money. There are far better options for the same cost.

I hope that they manage to sort out their organisational issues and learn how to treat guests courteously as the location is very good.

We had an airportpickup arranged, but we were dropped off on the mainstreet, at the drivelane (see picture 2). So we had to pull our luggage a 100 m through the mould sand. The reception was hard to find (pict. 3) The room on the first floor (US$ 65,00) was old and the wooden floor was very squeaking at almost every step. Hot water was only available after asking for, meaning that you had to wait at least 10 minutes before using the poor shower. Breakfast consisted of burned toast, marmelade and not well baked eggs; mostly no fruits, no juice. That the toast and the eggs were that bad, was because they were baked on a charcoal fire (pict. 1). The outside kitchen was very messy (pict. 4). As we had booked for 4 nights and we stayed there, but only because of the beautiful view and the vicinity of the sea. The price/quality ratio is very very poor!

That was my first time in Ngapali Beach and the person who took me to this hotel is my boyfriend. The very first moment when i stepped into the room , i was like "Wow .. this is something different ! " in my mind. Yes , you can say that this is the hotel room but doesn't even look like a hotel.. There is anything disturbing you like telephone or television in the room. You can switch off your mobile and feel the nature of the earth alone by yourself completely. You can sleep with the sound of the wave and wake up in the early morning sunshine through into your room and jump into the sand and run to the sea without any disturbing things like swimming pool or restaurant belongs to the hotel. In this Laguna Lodge, you can feel the silent of the night and enjoy the breakfast under the coconut trees with beautiful view of Ngapali beach. For me , if i come to Ngapali Beach again i will come back to Laguna Lodge definitely because i can feel all the beautiful natures of earth in this place only.
