“Good hotel, shame about the trek guides”
Reviewed December 19, 2012 via mobile

We stayed two nights here, and went for a two day trek organised by the hotel.
Our room was large (a superior room), clean, nicely decorated and covered with flower petals. It was a bit chilly at night. But the service was excellent, and breakfast was pretty good. We paid $35.
My only gripe would be the trekking guide. We organised this through the hotel, which I really regret as it turned out our guide (who we only met at the start of the trek) didn't speak any English! This made for rather limited guiding! The food on the trek was great, but I really feel we missed out by not being able to communicate with the guide. He seemed pretty sullen the whole trek, as though he'd prefer to be elsewhere, and at the end of the trek walked off without a second glance or even a goodbye! I would 100% recommend Pindaya for treking though - beautiful and not another tourist in sight!
My biggest regret of our whole Burma trip was that we didn't meet U Myint Thaung before our trek and use his guiding service, as recommended by Lonely Planet (for once they were right!). We bumped into him as we left and he was a fascinating guy with an interesting history. His number is 081 66188.

We stayed 2 nights here mainly to see the fantastic Pindaya Cave Temple and to experience trekking. We arranged our trekking through the hotel's Win Htun. We did a 2 days' trek with an overnight stay at a monastery in Yasakgyi. The trekking was a great experience. The 4 of us were escorted by 3 guides and they carried the food and cooked 3 meals for us on journey. In fact, the dinner was the best meal we had on this trip! The trekking was physically challenging and more difficult than the one in Sapa Vietnam of which I also wrote a review.
The Golden Cave hotel looked like the best value option for Pindaya. The Conqueror Hotel is much bigger and just 100 metres away, but will probably cost more. We were delighted with the front and back balconies of their superior rooms, which gave us good views of the Cave entrance. The room was large and comfortable. Hot water shower worked very well. And there is a fridge for your beers too. And a kettle to make coffee.
And yes, the staff were really friendly and smiling. Only the senior members of the staff speak English.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms with the front and back balconies.

The Golden Cave might not be the Jewel on your hotel list; it might not even be a diamond in the rough, but it is gold for sure. The cosy cabins are decorated with teak, the beds are strewn with fresh flowers every day and the rooms come with all basic facilities. The staff are friendly and their smiles are genuine. Real good deal, love to come back!

A most modest hotel, with no fancy amenities whatsoever, somewhat cold during the night (no heating) and of course, one has to use at least two blankets. What makes this small hotel special is the extraordinary friendliness of all its employees, all of whom are smiling and ready to help with any problem, although I believe that none of them speaks English.

Huge room with great balcony and outlook towards the caves. Room was very well presented and came with all the little niceties. Good bathroom. Within walking distance of the town centre, markets and other restaurants. Cheery family service and your standard Myanmar breakfast. Thoroughly recommend this for a comfortable stay in a room big enough to make it very relaxing. Room included a fridge but funnily the plug on the fridge didn't fit any sockets - seems it is not hot enough for anyone to bother with a fridge.

Room Tip: We had an upstairs room facing towards the caves. Extremely roomy and with a big balcony which was g...

This is one of the few options in Pindaya. The hotel has a really nice garden and a really relaxing vibe, and the town is very sweet. But it was only ok value, and although there are lots of staff the service wasn't great - perhaps because the manager was away when we were there. Only one staff member could really speak English, though he always tried to be helpful. We were keen to trek but the hotel could only suggest a half day trek option, for 10,000 Kyat pp (the Conqueror Hotel down the road could do a day for US$15pp), and it was the pricest of all the hotels we stayed in for getting washing done. A problem with the shower in our first room (a standard room - and the standards only come with twin beds, not doubles) and the absence of any other guests got us upgraded to a superior room, though apart from a king-size bed its benefits were limited - while having back and front verandas was really nice, the fridge had a plug that didn't fit the socket so it didn't work; the TV didn't get any channels; we had to ask for a light bulb for one of the only two lights in the room; and at the end the staff wanted us to pay for bottled water that we hadn't actually taken from the fridge. The hotel has a restaurant but it was closed when we were there - unsurprisingly, given the lack of guests and the general lack of tourists in the town. I'd highly recommend a visit to Pindaya, and this hotel may be the only mid-range option, but it could lift its game.

Very good location with walking distance to the market in the centre of Pindaya. Lovely staff, greeted us with a refreshing drink and wet tissues when we arrived and also when we came back after a day of trekking! The rooms got a bit cold at night but there were plenty of blankets. We could hear the people next door speaking fairly clearly and I think this and the coldness is both thanks to no insulation. Nice little terrace at the back and also of the front of the little cottage like room.
