we arrived in phonsavan by car, after a six or so hour drive from luang prabang. having
our own vehicle and driver meant we could stop where and when we wished, and engage the local people...watching them at their work, and eating in 'local' eateries...
'communing with the indigenous personnel' as i love to call it. the roads in some
places...and even the streets leading up to this hotel, were pretty 'basic.' the hotel,
it's facilities, the staff, and service were a delightful surprise. while everyone we en-
countered in this beautiful country was very pleasant...this was, after all, rural laos. the
food in the restaurant was both good, and very inexpensive...the beer was cold...and
the view from the terrace very interesting. the room was reasonably priced...frankly
much better than one could expect to find in such a remote place. there was a com-
puter to use, the breakfast was decent, and even the grounds were well-maintained.
after all, this is adventure travel, not waikiki beach... given that... this was a 5-star place!!!
we used the hotel shuttle to go downtown for a local 'culinary experience.' also...we
later found a local market nearby, that i wish i'd had more time to explore. our own
driver took us out to site 1 of the plain of jars... like stonehenge in england, 'carnac' in
france, and l'anse aux meadows in newfoundland--this is a place that's part of the
foundation of our civilization...it must be seen.
the next day, we pushed on again, by car to vientienne. the scenery on the way...and
the people-encounters made rural laos one of the highlights of this adventure... having
this clean and efficient hotel as a place to stop and refresh ourselves made it even
more so. (we booked here by the way...through our hotel in luang prabang.)

Vansana owns a few hotels across this country. Prior to this , we stayed at Vansana Vang Vieng and we don't have a very good experience there. But it is totally difference here, we have a wonderful stay . The hotel is located on a hill slightly out of town but a shuttle bus is available for free upon request. There are 2 rows of 2 storey buildings each overlooking the town and hill respectively. The deco of the rooms are about the same as in Vang Vieng except there is no air-con here. Need not worry as Phonsavanh is on a high terrain and the weather is very chilly at night and even dip under 10C during winter. Infact all the accomadations here do not equip with air con. What impressed me most is the hospitality of the staffs who always appear with a smile and very helpful even walked to our room to check us out when there was a power interruption.
Phonsavanh is a small town and most of the travelers are here only for 1 or 2 nights just to visit the famous Plain Of Jars. Its about Us45/ night but I can't see any other hotels around escept some guesthouses. We were served with set breakfast since its low season now and we were the only 2 rooms occupied. The lao coffee is good so are the fried eggs but what make it more tastier is the friendly smiling face that I really appreciate.

Set on a hillside which gives good views of the countryside and rooms have large balcony to sit and take in those views. The area and town is very agriculturally based with smallholdings all around the hotel so you can watch the locals at first hand. The bedrooms are a good size but the beds are the hardest I've ever slept on. The room walls are paper thin so you hear every sneeze and cough from next door.
The staff are a real mixture and none wear uniforms so you sometimes think one of the local farmers has just wandered in and is dealing with you. One girl tried really hard and was keeping he place going but who was managing and leading? The restaurant and service were bizarre with staff watching local childrens tv whilst serving you.
The only reason to visit the area is the plain of jars and I would suggest that one day/ night is enough. Two nights at this hotel is just too much.

Stayed at Vansana in mid-Dec 2008 for 300,000 kip / night for 1 person, 400,000 for two. Located a 15-20 minute walk from the main intersection in town, thus walking to/from town for dinner is not especially convenient, though the hotel offers a free shuttle to town. The room is large, with a large desk and chair, fridge, TV (CNN, 2 movie channels), a sitting chair, sufficient cupboard and shelf space. The bathroom has a tub and shower with ample hot water, though the pressure is weak. Soap, shampoo, and 2 bottles of water are provided each day. No AC or heat, so in December in the evenings it is damp and cool in the room. They provide plenty of blankets, so you are warm while sleeping on the hard bed. Buffet breakfast is minimal (bacon, eggs, baguettes, bottled jam, soup) but the coffee is good. Not an extensive selection of American/European food for dinner, but prices are ridiculously cheap. All rooms have a balcony with 2 chairs and a table. Request a room with a view of the Valley as opposed to of the town. This 38-room hotel seems to be popular with the tour bus crowd. They have a business centre with one computer and extra Ethernet cables allowing you to connect your PC. They charge 500 kip per minute (200 kip in town, but the 2 “cafés” in town were not working during my stay). They accept CC (at a 3.5% commission) and you are billed in US dollars but they give terrible exchange rates (when the exchange rate was 8,495 kip per dollar they gave 7,729 kip per dollar). In other words, it is best to pay in cash.

If you are only here to see the “Jars”, it’s as good as any place to stay, though if you want to be in town, where absolutely nothing happens, there are other options.

We had one of the larger cabins with living room, bedroom, and bath. All of the cabins are surrounded by beautiful flowering trees and the setting is pleasant. The food is basic but good. I did not see another hotel in the area that I would have wanted to stay in.

The dining room is being enlarged and the number of cabins is being increased. It seems that a large increase is visitors is expected soon. The P of J is scheduled to become a World Heritage Site in the near future.

We engaged a taxi driver at the airport to take us to the hotel after we arrived and to Site 1 the same afternoon. He was to drive us to Site 2 and Site 3 the next morning but he sent someone else.
It worked out fine but I was annoyed that our original driver didn't return the next day. He spoke excellent English and when I asked where he learned it, he told me his Daddy taught him. Where did his Daddy learn English? From the American POW's in Laos.

One night is all the time needed for this area. You will never see a more basic airport than the one at Vansana.

  • Liked — Clean cabin, pleasant area, and good basic food.
  • Disliked — Nothing--it was the best in the Plain of Jars area.
