Vansana Plain Of Jars Hotel

This could be a very nice place to stay. We checked out a few others in town and this was definitely the best choice. The location is superb: elevated, so great views, and a nice garden. The room was ok: clean, spacious, balcony, fridge.
We were told there was wifi in the room but that was not the case. Even in the lobby it was sketchy.
Breakfast was nice. Dinner was nice.
Lots of off-street parking.

But the staff's attitude..... (and I want to exclude the security guard here).
It was like dealing with a bunch of kids left alone without a manager.
Staff’s attitude is ‘why are you bothering me, I was watching tv’ (they do sit around and watch tv in the lobby. Ask for coffee, you get some blank stares (the 'good English' seems to have disappeared) and someone has to go and ask a colleague.
Wifi….. I understand that there can be problems but I have a feeling there are always problems because no one cares.
It is the typical attitude that we’ve encountered in hotels in Laos (with exceptions).
A hotel like this should do better, period. Vansana is hotel chain, they should be able to do better.
Because of this I do think they are too expensive for the service received (or not). I still think it is probably the nicest place in town.

Talking to management was not an option as there was no higher management around. Which is probably 80% of the problem.

Not in walking distance to town, but town not worth walking to. An excellent base for visiting the Plain of Jars. Spacious clean rooms, bathroom fine. Staff friendly, few spoke English. Very good breakfast selection. Have order dinner well ahead, but it was quite good and one could await dinner with a well made G&T on the West facing dining area balcony.

Considering its location to the Plain of Jars, this hotel was better than the nearby guest houses. The room is spacious but lacking in decor, lighting, quality of bedding, bathroom was dimly lit, very low water pressure, door gaps at the bottom were wide enough for insects and possibly creatures to enter into the room. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful when they understood my questions. Food is tasty and coffee was bold and flavourful. I believe the Laotian coffee is world renowned for its bold flavour. I stayed here for one night and it was sufficient.

It is in an impressive position on top of a hill, but up a rather bumpy track. The design of the hotel and rooms is very good, but fixtures and fittings let the rooms down. The beds were hard, had overstuffed pillows and the shower in the bath was next to useless due to poor water pressure and inconsistent temperature.

The hotel provided a very good shuttle service into town, with a friendly driver who picked you up at the time(s) you asked for.

The biggest disappointment was breakfast. It consisted of a very self-service buffet with about four options. You even have to wipe your own table. Both the western and local offerings were horrible. The plates were very wet on the stacks by the food.

Room Tip: The further you are from the reception, you will get less noise from cars and buses.

This hotel has so much potential but needs a good leader. There was no information at all about the hotel or the district available in the lobby or in the very basic rooms. I think the town is new to tourism which is a shame because the plains of jars are very interesting. The staff are clearly not happy and at 7am stood chatting to each other outside our room.

We stayed here for two nights in order to see the Plain of Jars. We had a two room suite which was comfortable with exception of a very hard bed. Water pressure in the shower was barely adequate. We had no problem connecting to the internet although it was slow.

Service was ok - we did get a hello from the desk clerk on several occasions. The restaurant serves western and Asian meals and a minimal breakfast. Beware, the fillet mignon looks and tastes more like a pretty good pot roast. The wine selection is nearly non existent - they had no red and only three bottles of white.

On checkout, they couldn't get the Visa card machine to work so I had to pay cash.

We have to recommend it since it is the best around. For only a couple of nights it's ok.

The Vansana is a modern, comfortable hotel about a 15-20 minute walk to the main street of Phonsovan. The hotel has a shuttle and tuk-tuks are available, so for us this didn’t turn out to be a problem. We stayed here two nights in late November ‘13 and ate dinner in town one night and at the excellent hotel restaurant the other. Overall this is a good choice for Phonsovan and we recommend it with just a few reservations.

The lobby area is open and welcoming, with a nice sitting area adjacent to the attractive restaurant. The rooms are in two separate 2-story buildings a short walk away. Although the second floor rooms are up a set of steps (no lift) a bellman is available to help with luggage. Our room (#36) was large and attractively decorated with local weavings and artwork. There were two low, firm beds with a night stand between them. The beds were comfortable, but the pillows were very hard. There was a desk with tv, luggage stand, built-in open closet and shelf area, a minibar with hot water and tea, but strangely no coffee. There was a nice balcony overlooking the town – rooms in the other block probably had a view of the countryside in the other direction. The bathroom was good sized with a shower. Unfortunately the water pressure was very low and the temperature was hard to regulate.

Although dinner in the restaurant was very good, the breakfast buffet was so-so and could be improved with more fresh fruit, a variety of breads instead of just one offering, and warmer eggs in the serving dishes.

Wifi is available in the lobby and restaurant areas and worked well.

All in all we think this is a very nice hotel with lots of potential if management attends to the areas where there is room for improvement.
