You are in the mountains. Even in January it is very cool in the evnings meaning that the balcony with great valley views is not very useful. The rooms were warm enough. Staff freindly. Breakfastroom very big (built for groups), the breakfast quite ok.
The place is about 15 minutes walk up from town centre. It has a free shuttle down to town.
There are a few restaurants in Phonsavan which is worth a try.
I think we got what we paid for and what we expected.

There are not a lot of options for hotels in Phonsavan, and the Vansana Plain Of Jars Hotel was recommended by our travel agent. We stayed for two nights. It is located on top of a ridge above the small downtown area of Phonsavan. It is a good 15 minute walk down into the town center, and we made use of the free shuttle provided by the hotel to take us down town to the MAG information center (Mines Advisory Group), a voluntary organization dealing with the vast quantity of still unexploded bombs that continue to be a serious problem in this whole area. The shuttle will also pick you up at your specified time to return to the hotel.
The hotel is old, with a central area of reception, living and dining rooms and a nice outdoor terrace. From this reception area, the hotel rooms are along the ridge. My room looked out on to a rural landscape. Some rooms look out over the town of Phonsavan. The evening views of the town were lovely; the misty fog of the morning which created an eerie light over the town in the morning was quite beautiful to see. The room was quite dated in furnishings, very simple and adequate for our purposes. This is not a lavish hotel by any means. There was no airconditioning (and it was not needed), and a fan was provided in the room. The worst part of the room was the hard beds. They were dreadful. Why oh why? It was like sleeping on concrete. On both nights we had dinner in the hotel. We had to make our selection some time before dinner and specify what time we wanted it. An extensive menu was provided to select from. Food was pleasant and tasty. Breakfast was provided - a limited selection buffet, however it was totally adequate, perhaps because there did not seem to be too many staying in the hotel. There was no electricity during one late afternoon. It was a good base for visiting the Plain of Jars sites (fabulous) as well as exploring simple villages, and coming to terms with the dreadful damage and legacy of many years of bombings and the problems of unexploded bombs.

Rooms at the Vasana vary greatly. Of the 4 rooms we were given, rooms 03 & 04 had sitting rooms, hardwood floors and fireplaces. Rooms 41 & 42 were like motel rooms from 1960. So if this makes a difference to you, check your room before accepting it.

I spent 2 nights in #42 which had 2 beds, nothing in the mini-fridge (staff forgot to bring bottled water), lots of mosquitoes, balcony with great misty morning mountain views, a non-working safe, tiled bathroom w/ shower, sarong, zori and a filthy shower curtain. My big complaint is that the electricity was on & off with "brown outs" the 1st night. The 2nd night I had to pack by flashlight because there was no electricity at all.

The included breakfast buffet is limited but good enough to fortify yourself for trekking around the Plain of Jars. The dinner entrees - like the rooms - varied greatly.

Would I stay here again? Maybe if I brought my own generator!

We stayed there one night. Apart from the Plain of Jars, there is no attraction.
The room are big, nicely appointed, oldish maybe, but remember this is Laos and not in the middle of Europa. Hot shower, airco, wifi, balcony with a nice view, very nice helpful staff. After a few days in the north, this is luxury.
The food - lao - was excellent. Anf for night cap, I had the stiffest black label I ever had in a bar, for a mere 3 euros !

We only stayed one night as everybody I guess. The room was nice and big though the hotel is rather old. It sits on a nice hill, overlooking the city. Internet did not work and the food was bad. We had a mix of Lao and Western food but both was very average. It's tourist cooking without charm. Avoid the meet....It's an old buffalo :-) Anyway, there is not much choice at the Plain of Jars so I guess this is a decent place to stay and breakfast is the usual stuff.

We stayed at the Vansana Plain of Jars Hotel for two nights in October. We had a room with a balcony overlooking the town of Phonsavon. The hotel is pretty basic. Our room was simple and it was kept clean. One morning we were the only guests having breakfast so we were served eggs, bread and fruit. Again, it was basic but good. The second morning there were more guests so a small buffet was offered. Most staff in the hotel speak very little English so be careful to speak slowly when trying to get assistance. Everyone is friendly and wants to help so sometimes sign-language, drawing pictures, etc. can help facilitate communication. Remember, the key reason to travel here is to visit the Plain of Jars. It is not yet on the beaten tourist route so don’t expect much above a 2-3* hotel and you won’t be disappointed.

Well, this hotel gets some bad reviews here. I cannot share these opinions. It's not a new hotel anymore, but it's quite a steal for the money you have to pay.

Location:

The hotel is situated outside of town. Well, okay, this is not the best location, as it is probably a 5 minutes walk to town (don't know the exact time, as i had a motorbike with me), but before you complain about being away from the action: There is nothing in town. The town is as boring and ugly as it can get. So the Vansana isn't a bad option, sitting on a hill, with a nice outlook over the town or to the other side over some a nice hilly landscape.

Hotel:

The hotel is some sort of a bungalow operation. These are very close to each other, usually two rooms share one bungalow. There is also big reception are with a big restaurant. Biggest plus here: You can sit outside on the terrace and have your food or breakfast outside overlooking the countryside. Nice, indeed (maybe a bit cold in the winter mornings). Its quite a big "resort" with a big garden and its large size and outside location guarantees that it stays quite all day and night.

Rooms:

Well, as i wrote before the hotel is not new anymore. And the interior of the rooms shows this. They look a bit old fashioned. On the other hand, these rooms have heaps of character. And they are comfy. My bungalow was very big, with a big living room, a leather sofa, a fireplace, a balcony (overlooking the countryside), a storage room (for your clothes, the room also includes a safe and a very reasonable priced mini-bar) and a sleeping room. The sleeping room had double bed which was not really wide. In fact this is the smalllest double bed i have seen in a long time. Just a big single bed. The bathroom have a wide range of toiletries, a hairdryer and a bathtub. I don't like bathtubs, but this one was okay to take a shower in (even the shower curtain seemed to be clean !, with cute ducks).

Well, as for cleanliness, everything was clean, though sometimes a bit old or used (the carpet before my bed comes to mind, which looked just terrible).

I also had a good sleep in my double bed, it was hard as usual, but not uncomfortable. But with two people this might get cramped.

Service: I found the service a bit slow and sometimes even a bit disinterested. When i had a problem with my phone not working, they came to check it out, but then after realizing that something is broken, not further action was taken. Same for the WLAN not working (nobody seemed to be interested in fixing it, but hours later it was working again). Breakfast staff seemed more professional. But don't expect anybody to go out of his way for you.

Breakfast:

Breakfast was okay, apart from the omelet i ordered. I'm really not picky about omelets, but this one was just plain bad (pure egg plus some very plastic looking ham).

Verdict:

I have seen all other hotels in town from outside and none of these looked as if could take the crown of the Vansana hotel. The Vansana is not new, but comfortable, with loads of character and big rooms. The location is a bit off, but as i said, there is NOTHING in town worth staying for.

Btw: If you want good food, there is a new restaurant called Bamboozle, which served me good food and the owner seems to be very nice guy, which is happy to supply you with any information you might need.
