“Noisy”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2012

The good: no security issues, rooms are clean. Staff is friendly. Ample storage/shelf space, and nice to have a little fridge. I had a good supply of hot water for my shower.

The bad: don't think that just because you are away from the main town that you will have a restful night...music from nearby houses is persistent. Beds are hard. Breakfast is bad...cold, congealed scrambled eggs and stale bread. Maybe this is the best to be had in Phonsavan?

We stayed in a deluxe room which is very large, but decor of whole hotel is very tired. It is reasonably priced but definitely a no-frills place. Breakfast was also very poor.

We stayed in Vansana Plain of Jars Hotel for two nights in January 2012 which is during the dry, cooler time of the year. The hotel organised our booking efficiently online and arranged a pickup at the airport which is very close to the city and hence the hotel, perched in a prime position on the top of a hill with about a ten minute walk down to the township. The hotel has a shuttle bus service down to the township and back.

The main hotel building has a reception area and large dining room overlooking the valley.
A small, free internet room is beside the reception desk.

The hotel rooms are arranged in blocks on a single and then a double level along a couple of pathways. Our room was simple but comfortable with very solid beds, a safe, a fridge and plenty of hot water in the shower in the bathroom. There was no bath which we didn't need in any case. From our room to the main building there was a two or three minute walk.

In January the mornings were very cool, and sometimes misty. By lunchtime the temperature had climbed considerably.

Although the hotel provides a shuttle bus to the town, we decided to have our evening meals on both nights at the hotel itself. There are a lot of other options in the township. The hotel menu has an extensive western and Asian selection. We chose from the latter and the dishes were well prepared and most enjoyable. There is a range of beers and wine available. Only large bottles of beer are available and wine is not available by the glass. We didn't ask about bringing liquor of our own.

Our experience from booking to departure was most positive and we would recommend this hotel for a visit to this location.

Room Tip: If the weather is uncertain, request a room close to the main building although the furthermost room...

We were a bit surprised by the drop in temperature after the sun went down, but no problem with borrowing a heater for the room, and extra duvets for us mollycoddled English! The room was big and clean - no problems with anything; the restaurant was cosy ( a real fire! ) and the food was excellent (try the grilled fish and fries ...). Above all the staff were so nice - the lady who was running the front desk (and the restaurant) was fantastic, as were all the others. They have a shuttle service into town, but it's only about 10 mins rather dusty walk, and the views from our room were great, and it was QUIET !

Room Tip: Rooms 40 upwards are at the far end of the row of bungalows, are dead quiet and have views out over...

Pros
- We arrived at 16:00 and they didn't have 2 twin connecting rooms as we booked (via Agoda), so they upgraded us to 2 suites side by side.
- The suites have a fireplace which was indispensable in the cold weather! In the evening you can call reception to start the fire. The fire goes out in less than an hour unless you keep feeding it more firewood, but it still warms up the room.
- Hot water for shower was warm enough unlike that of other hotels.
- Don't forget to make good use of the free shuttle service into town. Ask at the reception. The shuttle is an old van and the driver can't speak much English but adequate for the short trip into town; you can arrange a time for the driver to pick you up. If you're in town to visit MAG or a restaurant, you can get them to help call the hotel for pick up. Make sure the van has the hotel name on it.
- The suite had good amenities like a huge fridge, electric kettle, teacups and so on.
- Reception was friendly and helpful.
- Rooms were clean.

Cons
- No heating except for the fireplace, so it was cold.

Other pointers
- Breakfast was a small buffet.
- Don't check in too late if you can; from about 16:30 onwards there was a huge crowd of tourists coming to check in.

Safety
- Like all other accommodation we've used in Laos, the room did not have a smoke detector or water sprinkler as is standard for hotels in other countries. They do have fire extinguishers outside the room, but they're made in China....

Stayed there for 2 nights. Room was big and clean. Beds were firm and comfortable. Had to change room after the first night as the water heater had some problems. Shower was reasonably strong. Hotel staff were very willing to share more about Xieng Khouang and some were college students working part-time there. Service was good. The only thing I found inconvenient was that this hotel was on top of a hill. It wasn't convenient walking through the dirt tracks down to town. However, this was easily compensated by the excellent views of the city in front and the mountains behind.

I had Room #5 which was nice size with a ground-level terrace overlooking the valley. Small trees obstructed the view. When the porter takes you to your room, have him check that the switch for the hot water is on. It is the yellow switch on the right next to the front door. Flip it up.

There is lots of cabinet space and plenty of hangers. You are given 2 bottles of water, there is a small refrigerator and a tea set-up. There is no a/c, just a fan as the area is cool. Though there is a grill and screens on the windows, make sure they latch at the top and bottom when you close them or they can be opened from the outside. You may have to push them in from the outside as the wood is a little warped.

Rooms 1,2,3 and 4 (didn’t have, just peeked in while they were being cleaned) are mini-suites with a living room, fireplace and separate bedroom. If the price difference isn’t that much, these would make for a much nicer stay.

Room Tip: The standard rooms are nice, but take a look at the mini-suites for a more comfortable stay.
