“Travellers Beware”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

This hotel has very little to recommend it. In poor state of repair, the cabins we stayed in shook when anyone moved, the stairs were rotting, the deck had fallen off, cracks in the floorboards, cold water only in basin, the water in shower only warm. It was freezing the nights we stayed. No coffee for breakfast-had run out they said!!The only positive was the staff especially Tu (?) who appeared to be the only one who spoke reasonable English and went out of his way to help. Would never stay here again.

A draught through every window.
A creak from every door.
Meagre food and badly cooked.
"Do you mean you want some more?"
Disintegrating staircase.
Cold water faucet basin.
Garbage on all the pathways.
No tea or coffee making.
Worse! No phone to call the boss,
Who don't seem to give a toss.
If you liked Boot Camp - you'll love this.

There are three good things to say about this place, the willingness of the charming staff, the fireplaces and the view. Apart from the nice, reasonably priced carafe of wine unfortunately dinner was a deep disappointment. Husband’s filet steak was more of a minute steak and had not been trimmed of the nasty bits but the vegetables were fine if ordinary. My attempt to eat from the Lao menu was a failure because I got a very, very, fried fish with plain rice and a few mangetoutes. When I enquired about lack of spices I was greeted with astonishment that I (westerner) wanted ‘spicy’ despite my saying I liked Lao food. Then the much praised hot chocolate soufflé was lamentably overcooked and had become a sort of dull chocolate muffin. Breakfast was very nice. To get to the really negative points, and it was 6C here on Christmas Eve, the bathroom window did not close and you can see daylight around most of the windows and the door and despite fire in fireplace we were very cold indeed. The termite eaten baluster on the stairs to our chalet was thoroughly unsafe on arrival and half of it had been removed by the time we returned from our visit to the Plain of Jars. It is a ramshackle place and might be OK in the hot months but not in the cool ones. No tea making services in the room and no room service because no phone. I can’t remember if it promises Wi-Fi but it can’t be had except in the main building where it is fine. The path from our room was littered with rubbish and old shoes. Lastly I find birds in tiny cages very depressing and think it is cruel. I wouldn't recommend it to someone I disliked.

Room Tip: Take ear plugs against dogs and disco down the hill

My family of five (including three kids under 6 years old) stayed here during a visit to Phonsavan over the American Thanksgiving holiday. By the way this is the same place as the Auberge Phoupadeng, also listed here on Trip Advisor, so don't be confused.
First, the positives: The place has a one-of-a-kind atmosphere, unlike any other place I've stayed in Laos - like a Swiss ski resort mountain chalet (or, at least, what I imagine that to be like). It is all heavy, polished wood and stone with big fireplaces in all the rooms and a general vibe of rustic, decaying luxury. Nothing modern about it. It sits on top of a wooded, mist covered mountain overlooking Phonsavan. Quite atmospheric. We enjoyed our Thanksgiving dinner by candlelight in the big dining room (although the other, much-older and very quiet guests dining that night probably did not enjoy our presence). The bar area with a roaring fire on a chilly night (yes, it gets very cold in Xieng Khouang) is a great place for a nightcap.
Now, the negatives: I'm sorry to say but it is just overpriced for what you get. For $60 + per night, one expects hot water, a decent sized bed, windows that are not cracked and held together by electrical tape, etc. In most places in Laos, you ignore those little defects. But most places in Laos cost $30 per night. Another drawback is the location. While the isolation of the mountaintop is cool in its own way, it also means you are cut off from the rest of town and all the restaurants and markets. The food is also, frankly, not great. You have to order well in advance and you have little choice. And definitely don't order from the Lao menu. It is some of the blandest, soggiest Lao food I have ever tasted.
So, to sum up: you might love this place. Or you might decide staying at one of the cleaner, bigger, newer joints in town is more to your liking. Hope you make the right call!

We stayed there for just one night on the way of the Plain of Jars. The rooms are old, bathroom very run down, beds hard and we got bitten by a lot of insects. You can hear the neighbours talking. It is for sure in a nice environment but I would not recommend it to someone who has a little bit of expectations. It was by far the worst place we stayed during the entire trip.

Stayed just one night as part of a visit to the Plain of Jars. Lots of character tucked into the forest with lovely views over the town of Phonsavan. Room was large and comfortable but beds are hard in Laos. Bathroom pretty basic but adequate. There was a choice of French or Lao food for Dinner in the restaurant and we opted for Lao and were not disappointed, although there is limited choice, understandably remembering its location. Lots of critters that might intrude into your room from the forest outside, we were lucky only to see a cockroach, but staff were obliging in finding and removing. Friendly place and staff.

Stayed for 2 nights end of July 2012, as part of a whistlestop tour of Lao PDR. Loved it. A huge rustic cabin perched high on the hillside overlooking the valley. Arrived in the rain - it rained heavily on and off for 2 days  But it did not spoil our enjoyment. The welcome from the owner was fantastic. The staff were excellent, so helpful. We ate both nights in the hotel restaurant. Superb food, fried riverfish, buffalo steak, salads and a good carafe of red. All served beside a wonderful logfire. Breakfasts were huge, fruit, toast, eggs, really good coffee. We also had the logfire made up in our room !! Going to sleep listening to the crickets outside and the crackle of the logs inside. Don’t expect 5 star luxury – expect cosy comfort and staff who care and you will not be disappointed.

Room Tip: Just tell them what you would like.
