“Great for Spartans!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2012

looks charming at the beginning, located on top of a hill overlooking the town.
The staff is very friendly and accomodating.
Then you get the room , which actually is a bungalow with the most minimalistic items. The room was extremely cold, the only heating was supposed to be the fire place. Sounds cosy? It is if you can light a fire! The guy from te hotel failed because the wood was all wet. After two attempts we gave up and went to the lobby, there at least they had the fire going.
We had dinner there, wvich was reasonable, but then we had to go back to the bungalow. They tried to lught the fire again, and finally with the help of a hair dryer we had with us we succeded.
Then we wanted to take a shower. Obviously there was no hot water , only a gas heater which was set to 5 liters, and then it went out.
We slept with three blankets and the worst was to get up in the morning to a completely cold room (the fire went out sometime during the night).
If this is #3 in Phonsavanh, I don't even want to think about what the next ones are.
Bottom line: avoid!

A great location on the hill overlooking Phonsavan spoilt by the lack ground maintenence, which takes it from rustic to tired. The duplex wooden chalets are spacious with good showers but the beds were harder than the normal Asian beds making for an uncomfortable night. The French Chef was in hospital so there was only a very limited menu that was poorly cooked and presented. A disappointment.

Room Tip: Try to get a room overlooking the valley.

I had stayed at this place twice previously and had positive memories -- until I made the third visit. First, the manager who was running the place this time was extremely unfelpful. The tables at the restaurant were pre-allocated, and you are not allowed to choose one. My travel companion was feeling cold and wanted to avoid draught, but we were ushered to the table closest to the entrance door. The manager seemed to have no local knowledge -- when we asked about local textiles, he didn't show any interest. Second, staff got panicky when the place was full. At dinner, we ordered a bottle of beer, but foods were served first. When I asked about the beer, the manager's response was: "We are full today!" It seemed that he can't manage his hotel when it is fully booked. Wonderful. The waiters spoke poor and unrecognisable English. It was extremely hard to communicate.

Was greated upon arrival by Sanya Vincent who while I expect English is about his 4th language he spoke it impecably. His assistance was invaluable. While to far out of town to get there there is pehaps no reason to stay in town. Views from the hotel are great. The room is a basic pine cabin without AC it was comfortable enough for the night. Food and bar prices and quality were excellant. This hotel is a real find, feel it will struggle with newly constructed and constructing better looking hotels, which will be a real shame.

The staff were very welcoming and we were shown to our cottage. I had booked for 3 and we had about two thirds of a cottage and our son had his own room and bathroom. Our stay at Auberge Phouphadeng was at an unusually hot time, so the lack of fans, aircon or window screens meant we were pretty hot due to mozzies rising at dusk necessitating closing the windows. There were flying ants that crawled along the beams above our son's bed and were dropping all over him in the night. For the second night we moved his bed to a different part of the room.
While very quaint and pretty with open fireplaces and timber floors, walls and ceilings I believe that the rooms will require some serious maintenance in the near future and the bathrooms will also require renovation very soon. There were guests in the other room in our cottage (with a separate entrance on another side) and even though the wall was stone we could hear their voices very clearly which was quite bizarre at night when going to sleep.
The location is lovely with delightful views down the hill to the farms below and the town. There is a quaint restaurant open for the breakfasts and dinner if desired. We used this as were too tired to venture down town after our journey and then after our day tour.
I think in the past lack of competition as well as the quaintness has ensured the hotel has remained popular. Now that Phonsavan is developing (I noticed a new hotel on a nearby hill and believe there are another couple of good standard new ones) Auberge Phouphadeng will have to improve to keep their market share as they are not that cheap.

My sister and I arrived in Phonsavan without a place to stay and looked at several places before we headed over to the Auberge to check it out. It was not only far and away the best place in town but also one of the nicest places we stayed in SE Asia. The room (actually a bungalow) was quiet and comfortable, and the working fireplace was a nice touch for a chilly night. The restaurant was quite good, and its view over town was lovely at sunset. And the staff was super helpful not only in organizing a reasonably-priced tour of the Plain of Jars, but also in helping us find alternative transport to Luang Phabangwhen our flight to was cancelled at the last minute.

I stayed here for 3 nights in early November and had a fantastic stay. Most people do not think of staying in Phonsavan so long when visiting the Plain of Jars. I flew from and back to Vientiane and was captive to the flight schedules so I had no choice. I'm glad it worked out that way.

The hilltop location is fantastic, providing panoramic views of the plains below. The rustic cabins with fireplaces are a wonderful and charming change from the usual guesthouses and hotels. The brothers who own and run the place were great to get to know and I had some fun hanging out with some of their local friends who sometimes come by for a Beer Lao.

They arranged a great guide for me who couldn't have been better. Drinks before dinner in the cozy lounge with fireplace was a nice opportunity to chat with other travelers. Met one couple who reignited my dormant enthusiasm to plan a trip one day on a cargo freighter and met some cool guys who were off-roading their way through Laos on dirtbikes. Dinner each night was very tasty and the staff was friendly and accommodating.

And each evening after dinner I retired to my cabin, got a blazing fire going and relaxed with some great reading. After seeing Phonsavan center I was happy to be here outside of the town. After traveling for nearly a month, my 3 nights here were the perfect time-out to just let time stand still and enjoy.
