“A Relaxing Retreat”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

Although the party scene in Vang Vieng has recently quietened down, Maylyn Guest House offers a peaceful haven from the town itself. My wife was feeling a bit sick so we stayed in the new rooms (80 000kip), concrete and with en suite bathrooms, not the bungalows, which are simpler and made of wood. Situated across the river and set in lush gardens with loads of butterflies, this is THE place to chill out, lie down and read a book or just do nothing. With friendly staff, simple but good food, if you want a quiet, relaxing retreat, this is the place for you.

Only spent 3 days, but it was magical. the view is simply amazing and the staff is very friendly. Although i could be a bit bias since this is my aunt's resort. Hi Joe and Aunty!! My uncle Hatsadee is basically the host he speaks very little english but loves to help and answer questions. And honestly you can't beat the price, and make sure to check out the garden you have to walk across the bridge to find serenity. I could go on and on but i won't, i hope everyone enjoyed their stay.

P.S. they have FREE Wifi, a must; and the signal strength is so great. So you can skype back home or post your pics on facebook!

Love you guys!

Maylyn Guest House was a beautiful place to stay across the river, away from the party atmosphere of Vang Vien. The cottages were very basic with bamboo walls that you could see light coming through but the mosquito net provided was the best I've seen in Asia. Hat the manager was friendly and oh so helpful. Food was OK for breakfast and not having to go anywhere and internet was available most of the time. You can rent bicycles or motorbikes close by for exploring the area. What a deal, paid $6.25 USD for a cottage with shared bathroom! Wish I could have stayed longer.

I stopped by for lunch and stayed 2 weeks. Such a pleasant spot, across the river from the tourist centre. Country walks or bike rides from your doorstep; and back for a sundowner on your balcony looking out over quiet fields to the cliffs. Friendly cafe staff with good food - and no irritating tour groups so a chance to hang out with other travellers, or chat to the locals.

if you're looking for a place to get away from the crazy of Vang Vieng but still be stumbling distance from all the action, this place is what you seek. it's in a garden setting and there are great bungalows with hammocks for when you are tired of doing all the activities VV has to offer. There's a cool communal area where everyone comes to talk and just hang out. The owner and the staff are all super cool too and the food is delish!

Great stay in this guesthouse. We wanted to be a bit far from the hustle and bustle in a quieter place but to stay at a close distance from the centre. You can eat good food there if you're not in the mood of walking to the town. Too bad the kitchen staff isn't really warm nor smiling.
Noted that we could use the free bridge to reach the centre during dry season.
Nice bungalows, even if some flaws can be noticed. The view on the cliff is greatly appreciated, in particular while balancing in the hammock with a beerlao. Plus, it is not expensive. When we were there, price range - 50,000 to 80,000 kips. Be cautious about the price as one of the receptionist tried to charge us a higher price, without any obvious reason.
We knew about the reputation of the owner towards French people but we didn't have the chance to meet him.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We are a budget guest house/mini eco resort. We are on the edge of a village our rear faces towards the Karst mountains. We are located next door to the beautiful and expensive Vieng Tara Hotel. We have a variety of rooms some are simple basic timber frame and bamboo bungalows for people who want a more authentic SE Asian experience and we do have more conventional masonry rooms for those who need them. The main appeal of our place is the location, the views and of course our Garden which at times is full of butterflies. Early wet season is best for the butterflies. I recognise that we may not be what everyone is looking for but many people love us.. ... more   less
