“Great location, fabulous value”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2013

Stayed here for 3 nights and thoroughly loved the place. Everything my mate and I were after, and whilst initially thinking it was a bit of a hike, that turned out to be the best part!! The madness and chaos that is Vang Vieng was safely some way across the river, and after our first night there, the locals had magically built a bridge crossing to the island and then onto the strip proper. Halved the walking time. Very relaxed place to stay, nothing but nice things to say about Jo and his staff. For the price you pay, (virtually nothing) its amazing what we had here.
The food was also good, and we found ourselves eating here more than once.
Highly, highly recommended. :)

Viang Vang the city feels a lot like an abandoned Tijuana. A ghost of a former party-town. Arriving in the center of town is deflating to say the least, but head across the bridge and you will find some of the best landscape, waterfalls and caves around. This guest house is great value. We did not meet "Irish Joe," but the Laotian man who basically runs the place (forgot his name) is sweet, accommodating, and just pleasant to be around. His english is proficient enough for him to be able to help you get motorbikes, find hiking trails, and he even went into town and bought our plane tickets for us (with his own money which we later reimbursed him for) since the website for VietnamAir was not working at the moment that we wanted to make the purchase. There is not a lot on this side of the island, almost nothing by way of restaurants or bars, but you don't need it. Get a bungalow ($10 USD a night) facing the rice paddies, with the river running underneath, and an amazing view of the mountains, and eat and drink at the hotel. This is not a fancy place (they didn't clean our room once in the 3 days we were there) but it is cheap. what do you want!?
The food is decent, nothing to rave about (we liked the chicken with mint and garlic and chili, but skip the Tom Yum here), and there breakfast is totally passable (muesli and yogurt type of thing). For most breakfasts we went down the road (turn left out the front gate and make your first right) and had noodle soup with the lady with the rather sparse looking snack stand about 100 feet down the dirt road. Don't be deceived, here soup is amazing and she puts an egg in it for breakfast, it was vegetarian too, which is tough to find. I think this cost us about $2 a piece? Can't beat that!

Room Tip: get a room with a view. bungalows are cool, still tiny, but don't be fooled, not a lot of privac...

Located in a great spot on the other side of the bridge, Maylyn guest house is highly recommended at a great price. Joe (the owner) has a wacky sense of humour that we Aussies much enjoyed. The bungalows are very well priced and many have a fantastic view from the balcony. We stayed here on the way to Luang Prabang and then on the way back to Vientiane for a total of 9 nights in September.

It is a beautifully peaceful location with flowers and butterflies in the garden and great food served on the premises. We hired a scooter across the road to access the blue lagoon and see more of the beautiful countyside. Hope to come back to this oasis some day.

Maylyn is a lovely quiet guesthouse just over the bamboo bridge in Vang Vieng.
They're individual bamboo huts set in a beautiful butterfly garden by the river. Huts are clean and basic with mozzie net, fan and clean bathroom with hot water. We also had a small iron box fitted to the floor and a padlock to keep all valuables.
Food is good, great prices. Can book all tours and bus tickets from there. It's on the way to the Blue Lagoon and we hired a scooter from the little shop opposite the guesthouse which was easier than going back over the bridge.
You do have to pay 4000 kip per person to travel over the bridge (includes over and return)but as long as you're organised this isn't a problem.
Really enjoyed our stay here, well recommended.

Room Tip: The bamboo huts are slightly cheaper and much nicer than concrete huts.

It's on the other side of the bridge. But you can walk 10 minutes to town center. It's really quiet and serene. At night you will sleep with all kinds of insect sounds. I stayed there for 3 nights. Slept very soundly. The irish owner Joe is super cool and energetic guy. He greeted me everytime he saw me and we always chatted a little bit. The view blew me away with air balloon floating above mountains and shadows casting on the river just below the porch when I was checking the bungalow at dusk!

Room Tip: 14 has great mountain and a river down below the porch

Great location the other side of the river giving great access to the beautiful side of Vang Vieng which is good for walking, cycling, rock climbing, the blue lagoon or even if you want to hire a scooter and ride through the country side.

Great food and excellent value for money. Would not stay anywhere else.

If you're looking for the party side of Vang Veing, I'd recommend staying the town side of the river to save on the 4,000 kip (to walk across) fee for the bridge.

Room Tip: Room 15 overlooks the mountain and room 1 is cheap with a shared bathroom but on its own in front of...

At first, we weren't going to go to Vang Vieng, due to its reputation as a party town, but after meeting other travellers who said the party is mostly over and VV's scenery is stunning we decided to check it out. And wow! We thought we'd stay for one day, but ended up spending five nights in Vang Vieng.

Maylyn is a fantastic little piece of paradise: the views from our bungalow was breathtaking, the garden is lush and filled with butterflies, the food is fantastic and the staff very nice and funny. In fact, we sometimes ate three meals in the restaurant / communal area. We also met some great people and just had a fantastic time. Thanks in particular to mr. Hat and ms. Nam for the lovely food and for taking such good care of us. We hope to meet Joe next time :)

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We are a budget guest house/mini eco resort. We are on the edge of a village our rear faces towards the Karst mountains. We are located next door to the beautiful and expensive Vieng Tara Hotel. We have a variety of rooms some are simple basic timber frame and bamboo bungalows for people who want a more authentic SE Asian experience and we do have more conventional masonry rooms for those who need them. The main appeal of our place is the location, the views and of course our Garden which at times is full of butterflies. Early wet season is best for the butterflies. I recognise that we may not be what everyone is looking for but many people love us.. ... more   less
