“Quieter, great views”
Reviewed February 23, 2010

This is just about the most northerly hotel and, therefore, the quietest as it is furthest from the music and parites! VV is a nice place, beautifully set in karst mountain scenery and more walking, cycling, kayaking and tubing than anyone could want. Sure, it is a bit party central but the MV gets you the advantages without the disadvantages. We got a double en suite with a balcony for 100,000 kip (without breakfast, A/c would add 20,000) and beautiful had a view of the mountains from the room and a 5 minute walk into the life of this small town.
BEWARE - the VIP bus to Vientianne sold by the hotel was, at least for us, a very old, non air conditioned bus, not VIP at all. I don't know how you do get on the nicer buses, but I found out the hard way how to pay the VIP fare and not get the VIP bus.

We stayed for three nights and, by and large, it was fine. The rooms were big and came with a fan (aircon was available for a 25% supplement) and the bed was comfy. As has already been said, the views from the balcony were fantastic.

Only two real problems: the first, which I suspect applied to everywhere in town, is the noise coming from the island into the night; the second, which was almost certainly unique to this hotel, was the approach to plumbing the bathroom sink, which is to say they didn't. The water ran through the plug-hole, down a small pipe and then onto the floor to drain out through the drainage hole for the shower water. It wasn't a problem as such, just a bit annoying when you were brushing your teeth only to find that you were essentially spitting on your feet. Not a reason not to stay, just a bit daft.

Another general point to bear in mind is the really annoying trait among the gap year kids to pinch flipflops from outside internet cafes, etc. Be warned!

We stayed here two nights after first visiting the overpriced Riverside Bungalows. Mountain Riverview had much better views, more welcoming rooms and was only a third of the price! You could sit on the balcony overlooking the river and the mountains, admiring the view for hours. It's only a very short walk away from the main riverside bars and restaurants, but is well protected from the noise: an excellent location. No meals are offered, but these can easily be arranged at any of the nearby restaurants. We were very glad to have stumbled upon this place and would be happy to stay here again.
