“Rooms ok, but very rude owners!!!”
Reviewed December 8, 2010

Stayed here with on a trip with my girlfriend. Rooms fine for price, never had ruder service in my life. I dont expect silver service from flashpacker joints, but these guys took the cake for me. I could go on, but we saw 2 places right near here for the same price that were much more polite.

A previous review stated that at $10 USD this place was expensive, i suppose he has a point if he lived in rural India, however at $10 USD its dirt cheap. Keep in mind if you pay ten bucks & expect 4 star quality then ur probably stingy, its a travelers hotel, meaning anything extra besides hot water & fan is a bonus. The Grand View Guest House certainly delivers with stunning views of karst rock formations & mountains facing the setting sun towards the west. The location is certainly unbelievable.

The main drawback is the party-scene music from across the river at night but we didn’t find this to be problematic since we usually passed out drunk ourselves as soon as we hit the sheets from exhaustion &/or partying. Being grubby, our uneaten food attracted ants since we were in the middle of rural Laos.

The hotel is pretty much centrally located & within walking distance to basically everything worth seeing in town. Its also handy that it marks the end of the tubing route from up river. We had no booking & just walked up & asked to see some rooms. No Wi-Fi but there are cyber cafes within 50 metres. No breakfast either but there are 3 cafes next door with river views.

Our tiled floor room cost us a meagre 80,000 LAK or $10 USD or 70,000 for an uninspiring street view. Aircon was an extra 40,000 ($5 USD) but our fan did the job & we were more interested in saving the $5 bucks anyways. We got 20 mins of hot water out of the tank. Towels, toilet paper & soap included. No power shortages. 51 cm TV with cable. Our top floor room had a balcony overlooking the river & out into the mountains.

We had no problems with the manager who sold bus tickets, tube rides & offers colourful advice on anything Vang Vieng. We hired a 125cc scooter from him for 40,000 LAK ($5 USD) for the whole day & were able to go for a long ride thru to the mountain roads to Kasi. Vang Vieng is a small backpacker town, it has no franchises, malls or big-business companies, the general rule applies that if you are respectful you will have no problems, if you go about making demands you may end up very frustrated.

My friends and I just got back from Vang Vieng last week and we had a blast. So much so that we extended another night stay here instead of going back to the capital city. We were a party of 4 and we took two rooms (one on the 4th floor facing the river and one was the cabin rooms facing the river). The weather was lovely and cold so air con was not required. I do admit that the room is very noisy from the music from Bucket Bar and the other bars across the river but it was ok for us because we were partying every night. On the nights we were not partying, we are too exhausted from our tubing and kayaking and we just past out in bed and weren't bothered by the noise. Bathroom was dimly lit and shower tends to go off in mid shower. But it comes back so I am not complaining. The balcony provides a beautiful view of the mountains in the distance. The couple who ran the place was friendly to us so I have no idea why everyone else are complaining.

Overall, I like my stay there.

We stayed there for 4 days. The room next to us came back from tubing and found out that a little money was missing. than we checked and found out that some of the money we put in the safe keeping of the guesthouse was missing. we found out that they steal small amounts of money from the safe keeping and from the rooms- sometimes the amount is so small that most of the people don't even notice. when we went to the management they were very rude and accused us that we are lyres.

DONT GO THERE!!!!

I am surprised at the perceptions of the hotel owners here! We have stayed in the guest house two years in a row, going back this year because of the friendliness of the staff! I found the man who seems to be the manager to be a lovely person who was always willing to help out, setting up a faux bar for us and some other guests one night when we could not leave the hotel because of the storms! I really enjoyed the family atmosphere of the Grand View!
I will however say that it did take a lot of effort to get them to clean the room for us and when they finally did they didnt do a great job but most of the time we were covered in mud from the river anyway so i didn't matter too much. It is very noisy as well with the Bucket Bar, the works on the river side of the hotel and those two birds out the front who woke me up most mornings with a course of "good morning"!
The rooms were large though, we didn't particularly need closet space so didn't notice the lack of it. We did leave some food out for half a day and even though we were on the top floor, ants got to it pretty speedily.
All in all, I enjoyed my stay here both years, but probably wouldn't stay there again if I went back to Vang Vieng just to see what other places there are to stay.

I had something of a dilemma when trying to assign a rating to this guest house and hope that you will find my honest feedback useful.

To start with we stayed in the low season for two nights. There is much competition in town given the lower tourist numbers however you wouldn’t have thought so when we spoke with the guest house staff member in the adjoining reception/shop/tour service. Despite asking for two singles and a double room for at least two nights she was not prepared to budget on price (and why should she some of you may be asking).

At the time of writing, the charges were as follows: 120,000kip for an aircon river-view double down to 70,000kip for a fan only non-river facing double with a few options in between. The reality is that this is at the top end of guest house prices in the town and therefore should be reflected in the approach of management. This is where the dilemma on scoring kicks in:-

POSITIVES
- The rooms are adequate size.
- We had a ground floor river facing view (room 201), which benefitted from plenty of light as there are windows on two sides (one facing the river with the other facing another hotel. We also had a balcony even though we were on the ground floor.
- The room has a TV with the additional benefit of both aircon (which was not particularly amazing – we had it set on 16c all the time and it certainly wasn’t working to 16c) and a fan. The latter is above the bed and does a good job.
- The guest house is very near to the end of the tubing run on the river which is pretty handy after the 4km float in the tractor inner tube rings.

NEGATIVE
- Staff attitude from both the reception staff, which we think were probably the owners (or at least the managers), leaves a lot to be desired. You felt like you were an intrusion into their lives and not paying customers. We have been travelling for 6 weeks so far in SE Asia and this is the only time we have felt like this.
- There is no Wi-Fi, no proper safety deposit box in the room (only a locked drawer in a moveable wooden bedside cabinet), no fridge and, best of all, no cupboards/ wardrobes to hang up your clothes !! Remember, you are paying top-end guest house prices for this !!
- The bathroom had not been cleaned after the last guest had vacated. As a previous TripAdvisor comment had referred to, there were numerous insects squashed on the bathroom wall (I counted at least 8 squashed insects on the wall and a cobweb with another 6 insects) after we had checked in.
- The hot water was tepid at best, even on the hottest setting.
- The hotel backs on to the river, which is great during the day but a NIGHTMARE in the evening as music blares out from the speakers of the outside Bucket Bar until 3:30am. At the time of writing, there was also building work taking place between the guest house and the river, which starts at 8am. The combined affect is that you are unlikely to get a decent night’s sleep.
- We stayed 2 nights and our room was not cleaned during our stay. When we spoke to the reception staff upon returning to our room on the second day (at 7pm), they said that we had to ask for it to be cleaned. Note: there is not “please clean/ don’t clean my room” sign and no one mentioned this when we booked in. We therefore had to ask for clean towels and continue with insects encrusted on the bathroom wall.

In light of the price (we did ultimately get a 10,000kip reduction per night after bartering), and the positive and negatives listed above I have to sadly suggest booking elsewhere. It’s a real shame as this could be such a good little guest house, especially as it looks very new. Hopefully, the owners of the guest house will read this post and make the necessary changes without trying to suggest that my post is completely incorrect (which it certainly isn’t).

TIP: In the low season there are plenty of other options available so wait until you get to the town and play one off against the other. We saw prices as low as 20,000kip for dormitory accommodation and 30,000kip for a single.

We stayed here for 2 nights and it was an all around horrible experience. We were kept up by the loud music until about 3 am. The worst part about our stay is the extra night we had to pay for because the day we were checking out, the owner told us we still owed him money. Because we were in a hurry to catch a bus, we could only find one of our receipts and had to end up paying. He was VERY rude about it and had no interest in our explanation and trying to jog his memory of us paying in advance for our first night. I would not recommend staying here. We met people who had much MUCH less for better rooms that are quiet and staff that is not rude.
