We spent 5 nights here and it was the perfect way to end our Malawi trip. Everyone is so warm and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. You can be as active or inactive as you like, the setting is breathtaking and there is plenty of wildlife, we had our own fish eagle by our room, amazing birds and entertaining monkeys. We did the hike to Peter's rock, visited the farm which is fantastic and walked to the furthest village, Patson and Richard were superb guides. The food is wonderful, lots of fresh vegetables and herbs and everything is presented so beautifully. You can eat when and where you want, we enjoyed the beach sundownerss with everyone and also chose to join with others for dinner which was always lovely.
We particularly loved our outdoor bathroom, it was just amazing to have the view over the Lake while relaxing in the rock bath, very special which sums up Nikwichi. I highly recommend at least 5 nights here.

Room Tip: NKWAZI - the best!

My wife and I had a short stay at the lodge (2 nights and one full day) about a two weeks ago. Let me just say, from the moment we arrived at Nkwichi, to the moment we left, you couldn't have asked for better service. Malcom, Kristina, Wes, Francis, and all the other staff made us feel welcome and treated us as if we were old friends.

The Location is just stunning...You literally are in the middle of untouched and unspoiled wilderness. A two hour boat ride from the main town (Cobue); there are Fish Eagles, Cormorants, Skinks, Monitor Lizards, Baboons, monkeys, and a whole host of other water birds which can be viewed with relative ease. The beach itself is beautiful and the water is crystal clear and warm. The lodge provides snorkeling equipment if you wish to look for tropical fish and provides a guide if you wish to visit the surrounding villages or just go for a hike.

Only downside, lots and lots of Mosquitoes and other bugs. Bring plenty of insect repellant (the lodge also provides it in every chalet as well as very good mosquito netting around all the beds) and take anti-malarial pills. With proper preparation you will be just fine (I didn't get bit at all).

Unusual but excellent...there are no set areas to eat meals. If you find a good place to have a meal, tell the staff and they will set up a picnic for you there. We had breakfast every morning by the water and lunch one day by the second oldest Baobab tree in Africa (over 2000 years old). Also, the shower/bath/washbasin is located outdoors and away from the chalet, but don't worry, you are far from anyone seeing you as you bathe.

What is also special about the lodge is the work that they do for the local community. Take a moment to listen to what they have done for the various tribes...we mostly heard about the boarding schools they are building and the agricultural programs they are implementing. Talk to the local staff, they will tell you just how much of a difference this lodge and it's staff are making to the area. Its the kind of work you can actually see, not just read about from afar. These are people who care and are working hard to help. I'm very proud to have met them

So, to sum it up....The exact words form my wife when seeing the natural beauty of the area was "God must live here". I can't say that I agree more.

We arrived at this small paradise coming from Malawi, with the Ilala boat, that dropped us, in the Mozambique border for immigration purposes, their speedboat collected us and took us on a 45 m ride to the lodge... amazing place!
Forget about your Ipad, phone and shoes, this is the place to relax!
Very good and fresh food, veggies are grown on the area, do not afraid to swim in the lake, No hippos, bilharzia or crocs... ok, they are around but too small to bite you.
Go for the kayaks, walking trail and have lunch under one of the biggest baobabs in Africa!
Recommend it 100%

I don't know where to begin, so I'll start at the end. We will definitely be returning to Nkwichi Lodge again. The location and accommodation are superb (I loved the outdoor shower and bath). The meals are inventive using locally grown and sourced ingredients and the portions are very generous. I particularly enjoyed the papaya and coriander salad! Any meal can be eaten at a variety of places (on the beach, under the fig tree, in your chalet). In fact we hiked up to Viewpoint and opted to eat lunch under the 2900 year old Baobab ... it was not a picnic with plastic cups and paper plates, rather a full-on hot meal with white tablecloth and glasses. We particularly like Nkwichi's community involvement with various upliftment projects. And then there is the staff who were absolutely fabulous ... attention to detail earns them all a 10/10! Our guide was Patson Chambo who keenly imparted his knowledge of nature as we hiked. We were researching butterflies in the area and now Patson has enthusiastically adopted this new interest. We were very sad to leave the Lake of many names.

This is as good as "getting away from it all" ever gets. Nkwichi is situated on a pristine coastline of Lake Niassa, surrounded by beautiful white sand beaches and stunning rock formations and backed by gentle mountains and diverse African fauna, including some very impressive baobabs. Monkeys and beautiful birds such as Boehme's Bee-eater cavort around the lodge. A wide range of activities are available, including very interesting visits to local villages, sailing in a traditional dhow, birdwatching, and swimming/snorkeling, but there are also a number of lovely spots on the property to just chill out, read a good book, and enjoy the sounds of nature instead of the internal combustion engine. Sundowners by the fire on the beach (with a spectacular view of the night sky) and meals wherever and whenever (within broad time limits) you want them served are part of the arrangements. If you must have internet access, the staff welcome you to use one of their computers in the lodge office. The only drawback to escaping to this fabulous place is that it isn't easy to get to - but Nkwichi's management team will advise you and make arrangements to get you to the lodge from either Lichinga in Mozambique or Lilongwe in Malawi. This is a truly unique place, different from and an excellent compliment to the more traditional safari lodge experience that you can enjoy in, for example, Lugenda in the Niassa Reserve of Mozambique.

Room Tip: If you love birding, ask to stay in Nkwasi - it means African Fish Eagle, and one uses a dead tree 1...

Coming to Nkwichi lodge was a huge treat. The beach is spectacular as are the rooms. While we were staying we made sure to walk to the incredible viewpoint and the baobab tree which is a must see sight. The staff were amazing very helpful, welcoming and made us feel at home. It was so relaxing each evening having a beautiful meal under the stars and sit by the fire having a drink. If you want to relax on a beach you can only imagine seeing in a magazine and have a wonderful holiday then this is the place to come. It is a remote and romantic location, staying in kokoa was hugely spacious with an incredible bathroom. We hope to come back. Kevin and Georgia.
